Title: ModDB Awards
Post by: WeatherOp on December 02, 2007, 01:23:52 pm
Now this may be in the wrong section, good thing two mods are BTRL Staff. :p

ModDb is having their yearly awards, so I ask everyone to go and vote FS2 mods. Good chance for publicity of both Wing Commander and BTRL.

Also there are a few more mods from here(SW:Conversion, Inferno, ect) you guys need to register any case.  ;)

They can only get an honorable mention, no matter how many votes they get. Or so I understood.

C'mon people, register and vote for BtRL and FreeSpace! Being in the final five is cool, but let's make sure we'll be the ones partying in the end!

I don't you have to register, I think voting is even open to guests. :D

Guest votes are only taken into account if the results are tied, IIRC.

The top 100 seems... lacking. Except for a few, they're all pretty much crap.

If I'm reading this right, BtRL is the top mod in the world!

I should have tried to submit my mod for SOTS..too late now...and SOTS is not popular enough to get many votes.

MEh..this sucks. As usual the most widespread type of game will always get the most votes - FPSs and RTS's :hopping:

You btrl guys really need to put a different vid than the "Scar Asteroid Multiplayer Test" on there.  IMHO it just doesn't do the mod a whole lotta justice.  Grats on getting in the top 5 indie category!!!!!  You all deserve it.

We've tried, every other video we've put on there never finishes getting processed. So instead of having a black movie box that says "Takes exactly one hour to process" that lies, We'd rather have a working video.

Wing Commander deserves it over BtRL. :p Granted they've had a lot more time, but the released product they've put out has been a lot better too, longer and more polished. (And honestly, a good bit more playable since it looks like someone mucked up the Mk VII zeroing.)

Working with limited resources is what indie is all about. If BtRL had chosen to sit around and polish the mod, they wouldn't have gotten the same publicity that they did. WCS chose to mod a TC based on a game that was well past its prime. If getting a lot of publicity was their goal, they should have chosen a different game.

Quality is commendable, but it's not everything. Duke Nukem Forever, anyone? :p

BtRL is more popular because BSG is. I'd never heard of WC before the WCS.

Are you kidding?  Luke Skywalker played the lead in Wing Commander (games and movies, IIRC)!  It's a classic.  BSG is a bit more modern, though, since the Sci Fi channel did that remake of it.

I do think BtRL has a bit more exciting flight system though, what with glide and such.

Right now the Indie games are in the lead. The mods have ~48K votes distributed over 95 mods, which gives each mod about 500 votes (yes, I know that's flawed). However, the Indie games have ~6.7K spread out over 5 games, giving each game ~1.3K votes. (yes, this is too)

At the very least, one of the indie games is near the top of the total pile of games.

Actually the indie game votes are split over 10+, However we are in the 5 that have released a version large enough for them to call it a release. The other are in the "Unreleased" category, and in different awards.

Well in that case, the mod awards are split over 190 and we still win. :p

This is no pissing contest between two FS_Open based games. If it were up to the BtRL team, WCS would have been in top100.

Sad fact is that many mods/indies that deserve their recognition don't get it in popularity contests like this. People vote for mods they associate with something they've liked, and original ideas hardly get any attention at all. Still, there's hope with the editor's choice awards.
