Title: Another N00b Question...
Post by: Leviathis on December 02, 2007, 06:37:22 pm
Hey there.  I have been here before and know a little bit about the SCP and whatnot...  I was wanting to get the SCP installed again, and was just wondering if someone could point me toward the most recent Media Vps?  Is this link good... or are there newer ones available?

These (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html) are the most recent, I believe.

Although if you are going to start the SCP again from scratch, you may just want to go with Turey's Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html).

www.fsoinstaller.com

Yes, it includes the OGG cutscenes. Have fun and good luck, you're one of the few people who've made 50 posts without even downloading SCP. You'll see a big improvement.

lol ya... well ive done this a couple time before... but had my computer wiped clean and its always a little daunting coming back here... the amont of info and research here is crazy.  But it was easy with that nifty new installer...  LONG download, but got everything working perfectly :)

Just a couple more questions though.... it came with a bunch of user made campaigns... and they are all saved into my FreeSpace 2 directory, but they dont show up in the game.  I can make them show up if i select them in the MOD area of the launcher.... but then i have to DE-select the media vps....

How do i run the mediavps and all the campaigns at the same time?

And did this pack come with any other voice support other than that frigin microsoft sam??  (also... when i turn on "Voice Recognition" under the "expirimental" options... the game wont start... what is this and how do i get it to work?)

If you have other voices installed the game will use them. I remember it sounded pretty cool using AT&T's natural voice but my machine was too slow to cope with it back then.

As for the media VPs and mods, most of the mods in Turey's install should have a mod.ini file in their folder which enables them to automatically run the mod and the media VPs at the same time.

Leviathis, my man. You might want to consult Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ, or at least the part that explains how you can use mods and play user-made campaigns. It is quite enlightening, I might say. After that, you could check the ever so disturbing Useful Stuff section (link in my sig) and download some extra extra content to be used with FSO.

He'll need that when it comes to installing campaigns from places other than Turey's Installer but he should be able to play those without needing to look at my FAQ. :)

SO i had a look at that FAQ...  and what i figured out to do was just take all of the VP files from all the different campaignes and stick them all into the Main Freespace 2 Folder... rather than in the seperate folders that they come in.

It also seems to work if i dump them all in the "mediavp" folder too.

This the right way to go about it?  or am i gonna f**k something up?

... Wrong. That's the best way to cause table file conflicts and such, or as you put it, **** something up. Put the campaigns and mods back to their own folders immediately. Then create a mod.ini for each mod the way it's described in the FAQ. Or just use the ****ing Turey's Installer and get the campaigns that way.

Ya i just learned this the hard way.... RE-installed now... lol... ****.

Thanks... just took me a while to remember all the stuff about the Mod.ini files and using the Media VPs with the other campaigns.  I think i should be good now.  Although the FSPort is freaking confusing me... lol, but ill go dig up that info...

Confusing? How? Basically it's just another mod and works like any other mod. Of course, you do need to select the FreeSpace main campaign from the Campaign Room in-game, as well as selecting FSPort as your mod in the Launcher.

I've got no idea how you got that from the FAQ. I say the exact opposite.

ok maybe i didnt get it from the FAQ... i think i read it in the Homsick Readme... to put the VP in the main FS2 folder... so i just started doing it with all of them.  I REALLY screwed it up, so i just reinstalled the whole thing...

As for the FS Port... i had troubel with the command briefings... not getting any sound.  And im deffinetly not listening to freaking Microsoft Sam for all of that... lol.  But i think it was just becuase i had everything screwed up... now it seems to be working great.

Homesick was made for Retail. Back then it was good advice. FS2_Open has a different way of working with mods that is much better.

But a lot of people follow readmes from old mods and get into trouble.
