This hasn't happend before, but this is a different harddrive than my first one. The game launcher works, and will launch the game, show the main video sequence, then die with a "needs to close" popup. After digging in the program folder I found a .txt file named errorlog.txt that starts out with:
fs2_open_3_6_9 caused an Access Violation in module atioglxx.dll at 001b:693611a4.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 12/5/2007 18:36:54.
C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe, run by owner.

Read from location 00000034 caused an access violation.
any idea how to fix that one?

Is it the same system? If so, make sure you have the latest drivers (if you re-installed the OS). If it's just a different drive, but the OS is the same (hasn't been reinstalled), perhaps you need to look at \FreeSpace2\launcher6.ini and make sure the path(s) don't have the wrong drive specified. I'm not sure, but the reg key HKey Local Machine\Software\Volition\FreeSpace2 might have a path mentioned as well.

It's a complete reinstall of everything, the main drive was a total loss (reader head busted). I've reinstalled the game twice and it still wont work, and all off my drivers seem to be up to date. No idea how to fix this.

any idea how to fix that one?
That line (in bold) suggests a problem with the OpenGL drivers from ATI? :nervous: Maybe?

Run the debug build, post any errors it gives you. Post the FS2_Open.log you'll find in your data folder afterwards too.

ok, I'm redownloading openal from openal.org's site, and I wiped the game from its folder and am redownloadin/installing it for the fifth time. If redoing openal doesent work, I'll try karajorma's plan (can't at the moment due to reinstall). It fired right up the first time... I'm not sure how to use the debugger, so I may need instructions for it if I cant find any on it.

OK, now the game launches but fails as soon as I get into space to start flying around. Now what?

I'll try the other .exe but I dont think that's what's causing it. Is that atioglxx.dll missing or something?
Edit: Will also try replacing atioglxx.dll

OK, replaced atiolgxx.dll, now the damn thing wont even launch, just gives me "[fileplath]\atiolgxx.dll is not a valid Windos image" and that box freezes and cannot be shutdown by "ok" or 'x', it has to be forced off by task manager. This is getting rediculus.

Ok, fixed that one, Windows didnt like the copy of the .dll in the FreeSpace 2 folder for some reason. WTF is up with this thing? It ran the first time last time I tried to install it, and it played for months. It's gone back to not even opening the game before "Needs to close" shows up and the whole damn computer freezes now. The game isnt worth this.
