Title: Me on the SW expanded universe
Post by: Desert Tyrant on December 08, 2007, 07:57:59 pm
With all due respect, I don't like Legacy of the Force much as a series, espcially traviss' books. Traviss is a god-**** mother-****ing hack who single-handedly managed to kill most of my interest in the Expanded Universe with her retarded '3 million 133t clonez' bullcrap. If you don't understand why 3 million clones is far too small for a galactic war, consider this: The Red Army at its height in WWII had 10 million men total. On one planet.

Traviss also seems to thing that the Empire at its height fielded a mere 9 million stromtroopers, despite the fact that nearly every Imperator/Imperial-class Star Destroyer could carry a total of 9,700 Stormtroopers + Supporting armoured vehicles. Times this by 25,000 (An incredibly small number from Tim Zahn's Spectre of the Past) ISDs. The total number is men is (As a lower-limit) 24,250,000(Calculators FTW?) This isn't counting total sector groups, planetary garrisons, VicStars, etc. Traviss also has a histroy of threatening and silencing her critics, amoung other oh so awesome character traits.

The other guy who nearly killed SW for me total of Kevin J. Anderson, (Who's done a fine job of skull-****ing the Dune franchise as well) who the absolutely atrocious Darksabre, where we find out Adm. Daala is suposed to be oh so awesome, when really, she's a retard who shouldn't be put in charge of a dairy farm, much less the Imperial Remanant fleet. Thrawn, she is NOT.

While I find Timothy Zahn's work to be kind of minimalistic, I also give his series enormus props for making one of the most utterly fascinating foes ever, and for generally being excellentaly written with a great story. I can't say the same for Travissty and KJAss.

To sum up my points, Traviss and KJA pretty much killed my interest in the SWEU, espcially Traviss during the whole 3 million debacle.

GTFO! Legacy of the Force is great! It's got a war where both sides are the good guys. It's got Jacen Solo becoming the next Darth Vader, taking over the GA LIKE THE MOTHERFRAKING FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR! Wedge is still kicking A as an old geezer. and...
Spoiler:
Sacrifice was great: Ben sniped someone in the head!!

and... Mara... :'(

Nah. A lot of people rag on the NJO, which I can understand, even if I liked it. LotF, on the other hand, is the chemo that is saving Expanded Universe.

Just about everything that was made just before Episode I was released, and just about everything after Episode I was released is a complete load of fanboy pandering BS.

That's right, I went there.

Meh. Episode two was decent; I would've accepted it as Episode One. Episode Three is good if you only watch it from just before Palpatine gives the order to "Execute Order 66".

They don't have the same magic as the original movies, but they did add some new things in that were different from the EU. In a way, I'm glad that they shook things up a bit, because if the prequels had been released and they were exactly what I expected from the EU, it would've been sort of a letdown.

That being said, my personal dream come true would be to see one of the Thrawn books become a movie. Oh, hell, how 'bout this - I get to direct the movie. That's my dream. :p

I would like to give mention to Aaron Allston, though. His stuff is great. It's consistently fun; it's the kind of stuff you can pick up and read from just about anywhere and enjoy.

Yub yub, Commander.

I prefer Stackpole's work to Allston's, but that's just me.

As for the movie.... This would have been a better version of the movie(s), in my opinion.

I also prefer Stackpole to Allston, of course those two, along with Zahn, round out my top 3 Star Wars authors.  I agree with redsniper though, Legacy of the Force is awesome, although I haven't managed to read the last 2 published books yet because of college.  I will over Christmas break though.  And the NJO, IMHO, was okay, although I can totally understand how people don't like it.  And Traviss's estimates in number of stormtroopers are far, far too small.

I liked  a few of the NJO books, namely Alistons, Dennings, and Lucenos.

Just about everything that was made just before Episode I was released, and just about everything after Episode I was released is a complete load of fanboy pandering BS.

That's right, I went there.

Meanwhile, if you feel that way, then why are you posting in a thread about SW? (ANd yes, I am ignoring that thread in General FS Discussion.)

My top three EU authors: Zahn, Aliston, and Luceno, all of which made some pretty solid novels.

Shoot, I forgot about Luceno.  Make it a top 4 for me and add him in there :p
