Hey all, I got a question:
I'm considering writing a, for lack of a better term, fanfic set in the Post-Capella FS2 universe. Or re-editing an old fanfic if anyone still has it (I have a thread in the fanfic section about this).
Having played Darius' Blue Planet campaign I would love to use some of the ship classes/names from that campaign. I wouldn't necessarily set the fanfic in the same universe as Blue Planet, but the ship designs, names, were really awesome.
Basically, I would create a FS2 timeline of my own, but incorporate ships from the retail game, Blue Planet, and some original ideas I have. Do you all have any rules regarding this kind of use? Obviously, if Darius, or anyone else has a problem with me using the ships I will scrap the idea. Proper credit would of course be given in some sort of acknowledgment section to the creators of anything I sample.
I have an original storyline all worked out already and hope to get started writing sometime in the spring. But before using anyone else's ideas I obviously wanted permission. I know it may seem lazy, but I was really impressed by the designs/mods in BP (not to mention the music and storyline).
Who knows, maybe I can get my story turned into a campaign someday (although not by me...i can barely use paint).
Thanks for all the awesome work you guys are doing here, it's great to see FS isn't dead.

Same rules as creating your own Mod - you can use anyone's ship, Inferno Ships, Darius' Ships, etc...So long as you give the creators credit.

That's not a rule. Essentially there are no rules, but it's considered polite to ask permission via PM before using someone else's stuff.

It's a rule Rule of ettiquete: If you are going to borrow something that belongs to someone else, then ask the person whom it belongs to.
Never thought id say that!

On one hand it is indeed a good thing to ask permission to use things created by someone else, or at least give a heads up. But, on the other hand, I think it'd be kind of strange if you are going to use ships in a fanfic. "Thanks to Stratcomm for the GTD Raynor". Sounds somewhat weird.

Well a disclaimer never hurt....Something like "all ships belong to their respective creators"

Etiquette...in such cases, however, we should use the word "Netiquette".
"Thanks to Stratcomm for the GTD Raynor".
Don't forget LtNarol, CODEDOG ND and mikhael! ;)

Well my using ships I mean like ship names and classes. Obviously the ship isn't a character or anything, but if I was going to use specific ship names, ship classes I wanna give credit to the person who came up with it.

that's exactly what i mean

o.O Just say it's based off of, or incorporates some elements of, the Blue Planet mod by Darius in the beginning, and be done with it. No need to mention credit for specific ships etc, etc... No one does that. They just say some stuff was taken from this certain work by so and so and they're done.

I used several FS2 ships in my fanfic for example after I asked, since I use pics for occasional scenes for chapters I put the credits there at the bottom (ie: Lancer by Trashman, Segomo by Aldo, ect...).
-
Ah.. well if you're using different individual ships, I suppose.. but if they were all from the same project I don't think you'd need to mention all the authors...
