Hi all
I didn't want to post in a really old topic, but if you want me to put this in there and delete this to save clutter then cool.
Anyway, cool forum for an awesome game. I downloaded Shivan's 1.5 version after losing my copy of the game, and tried to install the 1.8 and 1.9 patches on it from here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39499.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39499.0.html) . I can install the 1.5c version and get that working (although the cutscenes for some reason decide to be a bunch of horizontal lines in game, but are fine to watch as normal videos), but trying to install the 1.8 and then 1.9 patches doesn't! I wouldn't normally bother anyone with this, except that I'm on the Game Of Tag mission and have no TAGs! Also, the virgo wing of bombers (from reading other bits and pieces here it seems its the second wing) don't turn up (or at least I can't find them to end the mission, not really that bothered about the TAGs unless they will bug up any other missions later on), and unless I'm mistaken, the 1.8 or 1.9 patches remove this bug?
Anyway, so I follow the instructions for the 1.5c install. Then I run the 1.8 update exe file to the same folder as 1.5c and the same with the 1.9c update exe. I do what the readme file says for the 1.8 launcher (should there be a 1.9c launcher and my download of this update is just corrupt?) and open the launcher. Using the file in start|programs or using the launcher in the Freespace2 directory in My Computer I get an error message saying:
"The launcher must be in the same directory as the binary you are trying to use."
This comes straight after installing 1.9c, and I haven't touched anything. So, I click ok and the launcher opens. As the readme file says, I browse to find fs2_open_3_6_9 and click ok. Another sort of error message comes up saying:
"Please make image 255x112"
Click ok again. MOD is already set on Mediavps, video is opengl (having installed the GL thing that came with 1.5c) at 1024x768. Click apply and then run. Screen goes black, and then flicks around for a few seconds before I get an error message saying:
"Error:
Web cursor bitmap not found. This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation;
3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all.
Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable to the FreeSpace 2 folder. Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2. If neither of these solutions fixes your problem, you've found a bug and should report it.

I clicked on Ok, and it crashed.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, with no changes in end result. I know I could intentionally fail the mission however many times to skip it, but I don't really want to do that and would quite like to sort out whatever error it is (probably on my part) that is preventing this from working. Can anyone please help me?!!
PS - Apologies for such a long post, but I'm getting really frustrated that I can't play this awesome game!

You installed it in C:/Freespace 2?
You updated all files and everything is there?
Can you post a pic of your Fs2 folder?
-
I actually installed it to D:\Freespace2
I have my computer split into different drives because it was causing me problems years ago and I was losing data and so on, and once that problem was fixed I didn't get out of the habit. Its never caused me problems with games before though.
By updated all files, I downloaded the 3 files from that link for Shivan's thing, and installed them all to the same directory. I assume all the files are there, but if my download was corrupt or something and there was one file missing I wouldn't really know.
I have attached a screen of my FreeSpace 2 directory (hopefully!).
Cheers

Methinks Isee the problem..you got Freespace2/Freespace2/Data...etc..2 Freespace 2 directories...1 too much :p
Basicly the launcher, .exes' the FS folders (Data, Ereg, Mindpsring), .dll's and VP's should all be in the D:/Freespace2/ ... and you should also have folders for mods in there..like a mediavp folder, fsport and so on.

Then again, an easier solution would have been to use Turey's Installer.
-
Thanks a lot TrashMan, that has cleared that problem up! Although I do feel slightly stupid that I didn't notice that would be a problem!
However, I still don't have any TAG missiles in the mission. I played it through and the second wing of bombers do arrive so I have now completed it, but it still slightly worries me that I have a little bit of an error with my game. Any thoughts at all?
Unfortunately I did not know of the existence of said installer, I stumbled blindly across the thread containing Shivan's (wonderful) downloads, and so went from there.

No TAGs? Looks like a weapons.tbl problem to me.
-
The no tags problem is almost certainly pilot file corruption. If you're lucky though it shouldn't prevent you from playing the game any further as the Tag A is quickly replaced by the Tag B and then C IIRC.
-
The B does indeed appear rather quickly, but I don't remember a C.
-
Good stuff, hopefully it is just that version of that weapon on that mission where there is a problem then. Cheers for all your help guys!
-
Yeah, Turey's installer is the way to go. www.fsoinstaller.com
Maybe we should put it on the homepage?

The B does indeed appear rather quickly, but I don't remember a C.
"The TAG-C is the third and final generation of TAG missiles developed by the GTI labs. This model provides greater reliability and compatibility with existing GTA turret hardware. Although these missiles are extremely scarce, tagging a target with one results in a devastating barrage from local friendly artillery. TAG-Cs have thus far been restricted to elite squadron use only.",
Looks like you're never actually granted permission to use it. The only :v: missions in which you can select it are the 3 Gauntlets and IIRC they don't have a friendly capship able to use them.

Ah, that explains it. I've never played the Gauntlet missions. Yet another hole in my cultural awareness.
