Needs more details, and I may make the MK 2 version, not sure yet.

gah stop that. We'll soon not have any more ships to model what with this new ship per day thing of yours going on.  :P

On a serious note, it looks good so far, though the Assault Frigate's engine section is completely different and doesn't utilize elements from the Dreadnaught at all (In fact the only visible parts of the Dreadnaught would be the foward superstructure; most everything else has been ripped away).

Okay. Found a ref that also shows the version of the Assault Frigate that you're working on.  So, which one is right?  The second one almost seems more like an attempt at reconciling the Modified Frigate from the X-wing games.

anyways, to add to the confusion: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://decipher.com/starwars/cardlists/sealeddeck/images/dreadnaughtclassheavy.gif&imgrefurl=http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dreadnaught-class_Heavy_Cruiser&h=506&w=367&sz=44&hl=en&start=222&um=1&tbnid=dfcH6f2ViVUH3M:&tbnh=131&tbnw=95&prev=/images%3Fq%3DRebel%2BAssault%2BFrigate%26start%3D216%26ndsp%3D18%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://decipher.com/starwars/cardlists/sealeddeck/images/dreadnaughtclassheavy.gif&imgrefurl=http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dreadnaught-class_Heavy_Cruiser&h=506&w=367&sz=44&hl=en&start=222&um=1&tbnid=dfcH6f2ViVUH3M:&tbnh=131&tbnw=95&prev=/images%3Fq%3DRebel%2BAssault%2BFrigate%26start%3D216%26ndsp%3D18%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN)

Heh. "New" ship per day thing? Look at the section from summer. I averaged about a ship a day for a month. Give or take.

I was modeling under the assumption that the only dreadnought like section was in fact the front...my references show that the back looks much more like the nebulon than anything else. I'm basically mish-mashing sources into something that looks good and represents what I feel the ship should look like.

Why does the dreadnaught add to the confusion? I already made a dreadnaught...(althought I didn't use that as a template for this version)

Is that based on the TG version, or vice versa?  I've seen other versions, comic art and such, that look significantly different than it.  Either way, he hasn't gotten to most of that ugly looking stacked metal stuff yet, he was working on the more basic shapes.  It was a preliminary version of it, just showing progress.  I know, hard to believe eh?  He usually has the model done before he bothers getting a screenshot :)

I haven't seen that ref before, and yes, it looks significantly different than my version. It won't take too much to change the bubble around a lot, since I've been getting progress on it. And yeah, I'm just trying to get my model-ideas down on paper, before I forget an idea I had on how to model something.

To be honest, I do like the way that picture looks, and basically I'll go with whatever you guys would like.

I'm in agreement with Turambar as for the Assault Frigate, though it's going to be a pain to create the exposed structure that seems kind of cobbled together with no real reference other than an abundance of straight lines.  In order to simulate that detail, I'd almost recommend going with a high resolution model that could have a normal map generated from it later on.

Like I was saying, that drawing looks based on the Assault frigate for the X-Wing series of games, or the other way around, and I was curious which.  If the other games are the only reason the ship should look like that, well, I'm fine giving Tempest a bit of room to make a nicer model.  Honestly, I'd rather see something else in place of the stacked metal sheet look, it doesn't even look like it serves much of a purpose.

Here's the in game version (from Rebellion) that Tura's reference matches quite closely:

Whereas, here's an artist's version from a comic:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:IsThisANebulon.jpg

And here's the version 2 of the assault frigate, from the Starships of the Galaxy roleplaying game sourcebook:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:AssaultFrigate-SOTGse.jpg

I'd rather see something between the last two, than another remake of the first one.  The ship has no movie appearances, so our only refs are comics, games, and other drawings used for those.  I'd like to know where Tura got that image though.  Either way, I think this ship has a bit of room to be different from its game predecessors, if only because they were a bit more limited in what they could put into a game than we will be.

that last pic was my primary reference, and I can add in some on those stacked metal sheet things from the second.

Yeah, that's probably the issue then.  Most people don't think of that one from the sourcebook, they're going to think of the one from XWA/Rebellion.  But I see no reason that ours shouldn't be nicer.

I think that the first two images are more closely related to each other than the third one.  And yes, as far as I remember, the first time I remember seeing an Assault Frigate was from Star Wars Rebellion which came out in either 1997 or 98, because X-wing Alliance came out in 1999.

That first image that Turambar posted I thought was from the Heir to the Empire source book, but I could be mistaken.  Ironically, that last version of the Assault Frigate, that Chief1983 posted seems influenced by the Modified Nebulon-B Frigate from TIE Fighter (1994), what with the two lower hull additions looking like it was taken right from two Nebulon-Bs (which is essentially what the Modified Frigate had).

Yeah, I definitely don't like the split, because of its similarity to that ship, but the rest of it is a decent source, and looks nicer than the stacked plates I think.  Whatever works though, if everyone wants to stick fairly close to the XWA version, fine with me.

I prefer the rebellion version, myself, though I do disagree with the stacked plate look. At least the comic version above seems to have some actual shape and structure to those parts, so for me, the ideal version would probably be a hybrid of that one and the rebellion ship.

honestly, I think that some liberty can be taken with the Assault Frigate in that, the comic drawing seems to a bit more refined in terms of showing actual exposed parts that seem to have a function.  The stacked plates are a big "wtf" because we have no idea what they were originally or what purpose they serve.

Perhapses Im just use to the XWAU models But I much prefer the drawing.  Your primary reference looks allot like the Nebellion B-2 Frigate in XWA also
Its also what Evil Jedi used in his Warlords mod for HW2 for that matter.
