More or less.
The US "annexation" of native American land has resulted in once proud tribes such as the Lakota becoming mere "facsimiles of white people," said Means.
Oppression at the hands of the US government has taken its toll on the Lakota, whose men have one of the shortest life expectancies -- less than 44 years -- in the world.
Lakota teen suicides are 150 percent above the norm for the United States; infant mortality is five times higher than the US average; and unemployment is rife, according to the Lakota freedom movement's website.

Didn't a judge in Australia just use the same type of statistics to release a group of child rapists with only probation?

Wow! I wish I knew more details, but seems like an awesome move. I'll have to do some reading tomorrow. This interests me greatly.

It's fairly meaningless. The reservations have never operated under the same set of laws that the rest of the US does. In many ways they were already nearly soverign countries, even the federal penal code doesn't totally apply to them. (Someone once cynically observed that the CIA doesn't need to transport people to foriegn countries to torture them, just to a reservation.) And honestly, they suffer for it.
I could also cynically observe that much of it is their own damn fault in persisting with the reservation system long after it became obvious that it was hurting them. There are other ways to retain your identity besides walling yourself off, which is the option they chose. Calfornia's local tribes (they prefer "band" normally) have benefitted, perhaps, but few others.

Well, they do have a right for independance. the native americans really have been served a bad deal. The USA is a big enough country anyway, it's not like it would miss a part of it's territory ;7

They should do a deal with Russia for missile bases. :D
Just to piss of the rest of the USA.

Nah, they'd blow you guys up for the reason of us being over here in the first place. :p
-
Maybe they should petition to become a British colony then. That would probably wipe out large sections of the American public from irony overload. :p
-
Well, good luck to them.

at first the reservations might have seemed like a bad thing to the native americans. and indeed we gave them the most inhospitable locations in the us, desert wastelands mostly. these days most of them have been americanized. they get their own health care systems and have other services available to them exclusively. then came the casinos and a small few natives started becoming filthy rich. since they have been americanized and have money then you get corruption, etc, etc. whatever the cultural differences between whites and natives, they both behave in exactly the same way.

More power to them. The only thing I fear is that, even in a best-case scenario, they simply don't have the demographics to make their quasi-nation a viable community.

This is a lot like that episode of family guy where Peter decides to create his own country within the borders of his yard. It worked for the Griffin's, so it should work for the Lakota too.
Oh wait..
-
Are there no
orphanages reservations? Are there no workhouses casinos?

i swear the roulette table is fixed

All hail Petoria...erm.. I mean Lakotia! :drevil:

It's funny, I haven't seen any coverage of this on major news networks or on big news sites.
-
It was on USA today and also the Telegraph.
Not really surprising given the total lack of vigilence of the american media.
-
It's not so much a lack of vigilance as it is that nobody really cares.
