Post by: KappaWing on December 30, 2007, 08:54:10 pm
....That is just a placeholder filled with advertisements? They're all over the web but I don't know the name for them.

Example: http://www.gooooooooogle.com/

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that people stop paying monthly fees for hosting services, so the site that hosts the domain just puts random crap in place of the real site.

This practice is generally called domain squatting. The companies running these sites have bought thousands of such domains (or taken over expired ones) that they can potentially sell to anyone wanting those URLs. In the meantime, they try to put the domains to use by putting ads or search engine redirections on them.

The most common one I've seen is "What you need, when you need it". One of them shows up on the HLP and GameSpot ads; ThinkSearchBe.com. (on HLP it shows up as "5 Descent levels")
