Couldn't think of a short and explained title, so short and unexplained would do.
Can you have the decent freespace on the freespace 2 serever? Like, has anyone made the origianal campaign to run on freespace 2?
-
You'll want to look at the Freespace Port (http://fsport.hard-light.net/), aka the "Freespace Conversion".
Just install it like any other campaign and BOOM! You have FS1, except pretty and in FS2!
-
...
I don't have internet on my computer, i'm on my mum's computer and i can't put freespace on it, so i have to save the data onto a thumb drive and extract the files onto my computer, where do i put the stuff?
(you need 2 items right? The one with the data needed to play, the other with the actual missions?)
-
You need pretty much everything FSPort related, and they can be acquired with either using Turey's Installer or downloading manually from the FSPort website (http://fsport.hard-light.net/). Turey's Installer will automatically install it correctly, but for manual installation: punch all the FSPort vp files into ...\freespace\fsport\ and you're done.
-
so I go to http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/ (http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/) and save everything to my USB and put it... where?
-
...\freespace\fsport\
That is, if you've installed FreeSpace to C:\Games\freespace, you place all the FSPort files to C:\Games\freespace\fsport.
-
Do i extract them to there, or place them there and extract them (to there)
Sorry about seeming dumb, i just have no idea.
-
Whichever makes you feel good. The result is the same: they'll work. If you place the archives somewhere and then extract the files to the fsport folder, it'll work. If you place the archives to the fsport folder and extract, it'll work since the game engine cannot and will not start interpreting zips or rars or anything like it. It will only take note of vps.

The Port is great and everything but you can't beat the original with it's low-res graphics and old school music.
-
And don't forget the old nostalgic nebulae.
-

You mean FS1 didn't have the same oldskool music as the Port?
-
And don't forget the old nostalgic nebulae.
Aaahh..., those. Sometimes I play FS1 just to see 'em. Heck, if I'm on a foreign compy, sometimes I D/L and install the FS1 demo just to see 'em. If those would be available in FS Open, I might actually have some incentive to install FSO... <sigh>

They sort of kinda look like crap...
...Although it'd be nice if I had to option of sticking them in.:)
-
Is the code to add them in even public, anyway?
-
Yes.
-
All of them? There's over a score! I'd of thought you just have to get one and BOOM, you'd have it...
-
Yes.
Really? Was the FS1 code released?
-
It's still in the FS2 code, partly crippled due to FS2 having a slightly different way of drawing backgrounds. Moreover, the NEBEDIT.EXE code -- a compilable Nebula Editor, found in the FS2 package -- is very much part of the FS2 source. IIRC, I believe there were some half-assed attempts at doing this (bringing back the FS1 backgrounds to FS2), but it became zilch. Dunno why.
The coldness of the FS1 nebulae could be a very nice change to LightSpeed's GFX. I think.

Yeah, I would love to see FS1 nebulae in FS2.
-
Ahh, the FS1 nebulae. Yea, I remember being a bit dissapointed when I first saw the FS2 versions - the "alien" look of FS1 nebulae actually added a lot to the atmosphere.
-

Just to set it straight:
"Nebedit. An old utility used for generating FS1 style background nebulae patterns. Not used directly in FS2, but the code to display the old nebulae still exists in the FS2 codebase."

Oh, cool. I'd add a feature request but I'd probably accidentally ignore one of the rules and get banned or something.
-
I've extracted them all to c/games/freespace/FSport
Due to a previous attemp they've all (apart from the patches) come up as FRED (Not freespace missions, but Freespace Editor). When i try to open freespace it starts running and then exits immediately, it opens up and the screen goes black like it's about to show the opening clip for Freespace 2 then terminates to nothing
-
I extracted the FS1 neb palettes to data\effects and chose the patterns and color in the background editor but they didn't show up in FRED or FreeSpace. But it didn't crash or anything for me.
-
I mean all the PSport stuff, from the origianal question
-
Are you launching FSPort through the Launcher, or by clicking directly on an executable?

Remember to choose FSPort as your mod, by opening the Launcher, going to the Mod tab, clicking Select MOD and selecting the fsport folder there. Then click Apply and Run. And don't forget to select the FS1 campaign from the Campaign Room in-game.
-
There isn't a MOD tab, sorry for bringing up such an old topic, but i kinda gave up.
-
You're still not running FS2_Open are you?
What's the filename of the program you're running. Freespace2.exe or launcher.exe?
-
Freespace2.exe, the launcher for Freespace2
-
Wrong. Do not, I repeat, do not run either FS2.exe or Freespace2.exe. Using the retail executables kind of ruins the whole thing, since you're supposed to use the brand new and goddamn mother****ing cool FreeSpace Open engine.
Run Launcher.exe and nothing else and you'll be fine.

I find that in most FSport missions, they just use one or two nebulae over and over again. It looks kinda ugly.
-
I don't think it's ugly, but... rather strange looking. Then again, I've heard rumors that once 3.1 makes an appearance, we get updated missions that take full advantage of LS Nebs.

We already have that, just that hopefully the next vp's make them easier to have them on by default.
-
We do? Where? Why haven't I seen them?
-
Lol, i haven't seen them either. You need the modified missions and the lightspeednebulae vp and then you'll see them. I don't remember the exact details though.
-
...yeah, that would be exactly the same thing as with LS Nebulae and the better FS2 missions. I mean those are incredible compared to the retail missions and even the retail missions with LS Nebulae present. Just that I've never seen 'dem modified missions for the Port.
