Be able to create the tails that come off the back of the ships?

The only thing that is able to have trails is missiles. Trust me, I tried. The only way to do it for fighters it to give each fighter massive nebula trails, and mke each mission in a transparent nebula, which is more trouble than its worth.

Actually I don't see how that could be a lot of trouble... just make a "preset" mission, with the transparent nebula, and make a big engine trail... but, hmm... lightning :/ or can that be stopped?

No, making the trail is trouble, and theyd all be white anyway (or whatever color we make the trail image) and I'm not sure how long they would be...
It would look wierd...

Yes and before I was commenting on the lightning storms in the nebula, plus the sound effects inside the nebula... I don't think it will work out.

Mayby it can on a other way, the Britsem brothers are going through the engine, mayby they can change something, they now how to program so, but even if they can pull something off i don't think Interplay will be happy about it.

The britsem brothers told me they could improve the fs engine, i don't now how but they said they might be able to add engine trails, whe just have to wait and see if they can do it, but even if they can it won't go through cause interplay or to whoever th rights belong won't allow it.

Nebula lightening can be turned off, that also turns off the sound effects.
As for the backgrounds, do a large 512x512+ map. The Homeworld backgrounds are very simple, so you can map up a similar background set using even just the nebula background.

Yeah and nebula's with glitero they are very easy to make.

Seriously though, you can do the trails like this, and use planet models, it would have more of a Homeworld feel having Kharak look like Kharak and not a bitmap (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That's an interesting point - I wonder if someone can re-map Darks sphere model to use huge textures. It'd make the planets a hell of a lot more detailed - even if they aren't quiet spherical.

IIRC, no changes to the model need to be made. Simply changing the resolution of the map will produce the effect you want; if the current map was called 'planet01.pcx' and was 256*256, I could simply create a new planet01.pcx at 1024*1024 and the model would simply reference to the new texture. To friends of my, they live down the street, but they don't got internet anymore. so everything they do i'l pick up at there house, here father works at Electronic Arts here in rotterdam and he is learning them how to program, and they are getting better every day

Yeah, those are actual meshes. They arent round, theyre a dome actually. One side with the textures, the other without...

Actually I wouldn't really call Kharak your home planet... but it IS where you start off.
What it does is like superheats the entire planet or something similar, I forgot what the attackers said the degrees were in the "cutscene", summit likt 50000, dunno tho.

the movie didn't explain much how they burned it, basically they fired something and the whole automosphere just ignited, crazy. Better then the lucifer.

Hmmmm....how about making part of the fighter a missle, and making it have a long contrail?
Or just add a trail to the fighter itself (I.E, missle trail instead of engine flame)

bah, this has been done many times: for exemple, the Dark reign intro movie shows the same kind of stuff, a satellite shots at a planet (self destroying itself btw), and the whole planes turns into a magma ball. It was damn impressive (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
