Title: fred2 can't find file
Post by: woodburner on January 07, 2008, 05:05:19 pm
Hello, people. I've made a mission in FRED2 and tried to run it. but when i did, it said
the system cannot find the file specified

some things to know:
-I am a n008.
-I have a copy of the file (i think) i'm looking for, which is 'Freespace 2' (not 'fs2', which i used to play freespace with) in the same folder as it's in
- i now have freespace open
-i use a windows computer (xp), but Dad has a Linux one.
-i can't open Fred2 in Notepad, but Dad says he could look at it on his computer
-Dad doesn't work with it(he hates amateurs, even the best ones)
-when i downloaded freespace my brother screwed up and put it in documents and settings. I later moved it back.

Can somebody PLEASE help me ????!!!!

That command has been broken since... well, I'm not really sure it ever actually worked.  :p

There is nothing wrong with you system... at least that would cause that problem.

To test a mission created in FRED:

Save the mission.
Place the mission in Freespace2/data/missions.
Open FS2 (it doesn't matter whether FRED is still running)
Go to the Tech Room on the main menu.
Click "Mission Simulator".
Now go to the bottom of the screen. You should see two boxes marked "Campaign Missions" and "Single Missions".
Click on "Single Missions".
Now select your mission and get testing!
Note: if you did not give your mission a name in the Mission Specs Editor in FRED, it will simply appear as "untitled".

Another Note: this assumes that you are running FS on Windows. I do not know if there is anything terribly different on a Linux install.

Actually it should work for HEAD builds. It will work in 3.6.10 too but only if you rename your build to FS2_Open_r.exe or something. That's always been the problem actually. FRED was always looking in the wrong place or for the wrongly named file. Retail was looking for FS.exe since that's what it was called in Freespace 1. When they changed the name for Freespace 2 it broke.
