Title: cardinal spear planet graphics?
Post by: chronicking on January 08, 2008, 07:54:44 am
hello.  i don't know if my version of freespace open is supposed to be this way but when i play the cardinal spear mod the desert like tannish planet in the background seems to have lines in the graphics or maybe to say not smooth.  possibly like there are rings around the planet's atmosphere or something.  i was wondering if this was normal or a problem with my graphics.  possibly a wrong setting.   i appreciate any info.  thanx!

You mean Cardinal Spear. Looks like this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,50512.0.html), right? Download this (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/CardinalSpearLowResPlanets.7z) and extract to your cardinalspear folder.

thanks for the quick reply.   i d/led the file from the link and extracted it to the cardinal spear folder but i still have the rings around the planets  and yes it's just like the pics in your link.   Ive done something else now.....  i got frustrated and started messing with the settings from the launcher and the original game and now it seems  the overall graphics have taken a down swing.   i don't think I'm getting all the fs2open  features anymore.   i remember the afterburners fromthe ships being changed to a bluish/white color and now they've gone back to the yellowish / orange color of the original fs2.   Ive been messing with this for over a week now and it's getting frustrating but i really want to get it to work.   i almost finished the retail version of fs2 b4 stumbling  upon this enhancement  and really want to get into it alot more than i already have especially with all the mods and user made campaigns out there.

a link to a settings guide about what i need on and what it's doing would be wonderful  and anymore info on how to help the planet prob would b great.

by the way  I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce MX440 64MB with AGP8X [but in display settings it says 4X bus]  graphics card with a Pentium 4 1.8 processor [XP of course].  i was sure this was enough machine to handle an older game like this but with the newer enhancements i just don't know..  any suggestions or more links would really be appreciated.  thanks.

Rename that VP file to CardinalSpearLowResPlanets.vp and it should work. The old name (LowResPlanetsForCP.vp) is going to be lower priority than fsport-cardinalspear.vp so the contents would never be used with the old filename.

Oops. My bad. I'll fix it, too.

sweet !!!  renaming the file fixed the planets problem! now i must restart the campaign so i can enjoy it with the new planets and not the ringed ones.... not sure why it didn't work to begin with .  i guess i don't have enough machine to handle the original hi res planet graphics that came with the d/led mod cardinal spear.  either way i thank you two for clearing that up.
this may be off key and i will take it too another thread if so, but i think ive done something to the settings .  i remember the PVD Cairo looking a lot sharper and more detailed and it seems that the the thrusters had different color to them.  hahaha i remember this because i'd get caught up in the engine wash many times checking it out.   this was a great game the first time iwent thru it and it seems twice as good now with all the effort everyone has put into making it this way.   i really want to enjoy it to the fullest degree  so perhaps you could tell me if there is a way to know if all the features are actually activated and how i can tell.
i ve read quite a bit on here [probably not enough] but i can't find a detailed section on the settings except at freespace wiki page but it just lists some get started quick settings.
anyway thanks again for clearing up the planet problem for the noob.   maybe u can help me with this new one as well.  thanks

The original planet textures are actually quite huge and some people (including me) get that tearing because of it. The vp you downloaded contains textures that are half the size of the original ones.

As for the graphics in general:

1. Open the Launcher.
2. If you want to play FS2 with purdy graphics, make sure that the mediavps folder is selected as your mod from the MOD tab. If you've used Turey's Installer, the other mod folders contain a mod.ini file that will automatically also use the mediavps.
3. Open the featues tab and tick at least Enable specular, Enable glowmaps and Enable environment maps. Depending on your hardware and personal opinions, you can tick more features on or some of the mentioned off.
4. The most important one. Check from the Video tab that you are playing in OpenGL.

Yeah, this is one of those "chickens come home to roost" cases where I wasn't thinking of older GPU's when I put the planets together, my main concern was to make them look good. So I ended up hogging the resolution to the extent that some cards simply can't use the textures because they're too big. :warp:

It appears as if the cards with stripe problems end up trying to use "half" of the texture at time or something. My card can use 4096x4096 textures so the problem didn't appear at all in playtesting; and when I've since tried 8192x4096 resolution texture for a skybox, the card didn't use a texture at all but instead the sky became solid white, so I guess there are differences in how the cards handle oversized textures.

Oh well, next time around I'll know to take the older hardware limits to account better. Thanks again to Lobo for hosting that fix pack... perhaps it could be linked to at the Cardinal Spear re-release topic opening message?

Not a bad idea, since other graphically challenged people seem to be popping up. I'll be in touch with Nelson.

here's a pic of the last stage in cardinal spear.   onto cardinal spear vega.   it would be nice to play these missions on multiplayer over me lan.   good pic check it out.
when i'm in the briefing stage before missions  there's an ocassional popping sound[like that of old vinyl record scratch] in the background whilest he talks.  other than that i see no probs with cardinal spear.  i'd like to play these mods in order with the main campaigns.  is there a chronological list of mods or perhaps the storylline of FS and FS2 andit's mods.  i found one at the wiki site http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User-made_Campaigns_%28FS2%29 (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User-made_Campaigns_%28FS2%29)  but it doesn't list all the mods ive seen here and there and not to in depth.   if so, i'd appreciate someone posting a link  thanks!!!
