Title: My first go at voice acting
Post by: Spaztian on January 09, 2008, 02:02:44 am
Hi all, I'm a long time reader of the Hard Light Production's forums, though I think this is the very first time I've actually posted here.

I've been looking around, keen to try and contribute to the source code project in any way I can.

I thought that whilst I learn to command fred well enough to make decent campaigns, I would like to give voice acting a go. It is something I have never done before and I'd like to start now and maybe gain some experience. It sounds like a lot of fun and I am seeking any advice or assistance anyone would be willing to lend me.

Here is my first attempt at a few phrases, I took them from the SYNC sample thread.
http://dasn.co.nz/VoiceSamples.zip (http://dasn.co.nz/VoiceSamples.zip) (400k)

The phrases included are:
Libra wing inbound!
Hostile craft closing on our position! Alpha, engage!
They're not here. Where are they?
The cargo's gone. Destroyed or been stolen, I don't know. But it's not there anymore.

All four samples have not been edited in any way, purely speech to mic.

Thanks,

Spaz

For a newcomer, that was surprisingly well delivered. Emphasis more on emotional delivery.

Quality is good. No breathing to mic, no clicks/pops and other recording errors.

I'm sure someone will find good use to you.

Very nice indeed. And the accent (it's an accent to me, being Canadian) makes you sound even more authoritative.
let that be
:welcomesilver:
to you! ;)

Like Darkblade said, your delivery is too deliberate. That's the main thing you ought to work on. It sounds like someone reading from a script rather than a character in a story - this is especially obvious in the 'cargo' line. People generally don't speak slow and careful like that.

But yes, for a first attempt it's really quite good. Just work on word pacing and let some personality seep into your lines.

Thanks for the advice and feedback, I really appreciate it
I'll practice and post a new set once I feel I've made some improvements.

Oh and thanks for the Welcome beam :)
