After the awsome, but aborted magic that was Macross Zero we finally have another high-budget OVA to finally dethrone Macross Pluss as the best damn looking (and scripted) short mecha show of all time.
Other reviewers on the net already raved how much money must have been burnt on this, and it shows too. I particularly like, that although this is a "mega"-production they have gone with a less realistic character design that looks cool, but can still accommodate some SD invoking fun.
This time the CG is lot more seamlessly integrated with the show then in Zero, and although the gritty mechanics of the mecha aren't as hardcore as the last time, it's still darn pretty to look at.
We've only had a basic exposition so far, with lots-and-lots of in genre/franchise references (the authors are also commended from refraining to blatantly shove these into our face, unlike Lucas). This time even the j-pop seems catchy enough, so you won't have to lobotomize your music sense (or watch with bleeding ears - and sometimes eyes when Minmay is on screen).
All in all, the most promising thing I've seen in a while.
PS.: the fansubs are already out.
Edit: Screenshots to prove its happening.

What is Macross?
-
I watched the fansub and it really looks ans sounds good.
This gets my recommendation aswell.
I don't really have anything constructive to add so... go and have a look if you are a Macross/Mecha fan.
-
Never watched this before, so i'll check it out. But before I do, would anyone be able to say whether or not this will satiate my thirst for cool splosions and big robots laying some smackdown on each other?
-
How much do I have to spend to up my semi-mystical bull****/bad singing threshold before watching?
-
I wish they would re-do the original :P
I hate the way new characters look and I miss the good ol' mecha design.
Macross Zero...looked great.. wish it had a better story..that "bird man" crap at the end was ...aughhhh
-
In other news, Roanoke's search for a Hasegawa 1/72 scale YF-21 model-kit continues.
Oh, and a Patlabor Hellbound 'chopper too please. thanks.

Oh quite...a lot of smacking, a lot of shooting and a LOT of missiles. .. at least it was in Macross, Macross Plus and Zero
Altough it's hard to beat Macross with that Super Dimensional Fortress pwnage.

Cool i've been waiting for this ! Also what is this about macross zero and macross 7 how many of them are there???
-
I lost count...but I can tell you:
Macross Zero is set before Macross, when the SDF-1 just chrashes, and the war between 2 human factions. Amazing fighter and mecha fights. Ending suckorz.
Macross Plus - set after Macross. About 2 pilots involved in next-gen fighter test and their rivalry...and a mad AI.
Macros 7 - about some rockers who fly mecha by playing guitars and other instruments. Watch it at your own risk. Induces bleeding from all holes in your body.
Macross DYRL - a move version of Macross, a short compact story. Not bad, but you can't shove 60 episodes in one movie.
there a few others like Sentinels and motospeda or something (power armors turning into motorbikes) but I havn't wathced those.. and I don't think I will.
-
Hm, that's the kind of fast paced battle I'd like to see in FS :D
-
Looks interesting, although I'm a bit wary. It is done in the modern style of anime, which means it's really shiny and smooth and digital. I'll also be watching out for the usual character cliches that Zero fell into.
-
TrashMan: According to my knowledge, the Sentinels belongs to the Robotech universum, and Genesis Climber Moespada is the name of one of the series that were implemented into the Robotech series. In a nutshell...
As for Macross, the order of the series according to somesort of timeline should be something like this:
Macross Zero - Macross/DYRL - Macross Plus - Macross II - Macross 7 - Macross Frontier
As far as I'm believing to know it, I might be wrong though so feel free to correct.

Correct.
Is it just me, or do the friggin' helmet designs get more and more ludicrious with every series?
-
Well I watched it, very typical "high school kid gets thrust into situation and exceeds better than the people who spent their whole lives training for it" bull**** that anime likes to do. I just skipped through everything to the action scenes, which, just like the rest of it, were overly bright and colorful, with none of the grittiness that I've come to expect from Macross.
-
People like to do this because Gundam made it popular, but with Gundam, it was actually slightly believeable. Gundam was dealing with a new weapons system and new technology, and it was actually possible. It was a totally new weapons system and nobody had bothered to figure out tactics for using them against each other, so somebody without preconceptions could come in and lay waste simply because everyone was equally clueless, or equally deluded, as to how to do it.
For it to show up in a Macross series, particularly one this late in the game so to speak, is pretty much somebody having a total brain fart in the writing department. Bastards.
-
Macross also did the same with Hikaru in the TOS.
Just like Hikaru, Alto is about to get his ass kicked - painfully.
Also, just like Hikaru, he had relevant training:
Hikaru was flying planes in airshows for ages.
Alto has been training with the very same flight-
suit the army/navy uses onboard the Valkyres.
Both of them are just good enough, to not get killed.
Both of them have rude awakening when put into real combat.
So, even though Gundam/Valkyre jack is something of a cliche,
at least in Macross you don't get to be an ace from the get go.
PS.: IMHO, it's more of a tribute than a brainfart.
Hell, at least I've found it believable, that a
certified pilot with appropriate equipment would
try to do something.
Even the veteran did a sensible thing when leaving
his plane - it was either that, or getting crushed in
the plane.
