Hey all. I recently got a virus over MSN, so i scanned my computer with AVG free and it deleted my smss.exe file that windows XP uses on startup. apparently after searching the internet i learned that this file is very important, so does anybody know where i can get the legit clean version of smss.exe so i can get back on track? I'm getting this error (twice) on boot up about how XP is whining at me because it isn't there.

If you have a system restore partition or DVD(or CD's?), I suppose you could repair install the system?
That should essentially re-install the system files but leave other stuff untouched, although you should still backup all the important data you need to save before resorting to this. :nervous:

Of course, if you have a 'legit' XP cd around somewhere, you could also try to do a... what's the English word... 'repairing' installation, that should reinstall that particular file. No guarantees, so backing up important data is once again advisable.

the virus deleted all my system restore files....
a legit copy of XP? oh, lobo, your funny!
he was joking right?
-
:nervous: ...yeah, that's right. Joking. Well, just google the damn file, download, run at least a spyware check on it and then punch it into the folder where Wind'ohs is trying to find it.

yeah i googled, all i get were reports of viruses infecting the file. I couldn't find any place to download the file...not even the microsoft update website. anybody know a site to download it?

very rarely can you just send system files like that.
boot from XP CD.
go to 'repair' the current installation
when the command prompt comes up, go to your windows folder, enter the administrator password if necessary.
type "fixboot" at the command prompt.
that should do it.

after sending and listning to what happened , personally i think this is a result of a trojan/win32.net sky or something similar , id use combifix , google it and use it , this should sort things out if u dnt have back up cd

That only fixes the boot sector, it has nothing to do with replacing missing files.

SFC requires a windows CD.
But if you have one, Start> Run... type SFC /scannow.
