Title: Freespace?
Post by: Psyco89 on January 16, 2008, 10:14:34 am
I heard about Freespace from a friend. Since I don't know what Freespace is. I was wandering if anyone could help explain it?

I guess I was just trying to say hi. Thanks for the info. Is there a section on the Wikipedia about downloading it?

It's the amount of memory left on your hard drive!

Are you really being serious? :wtf:

It's the first instalment of a great game (see above link from IceyJones), which you can download from various links on this forum if you so wish. If you do, make sure you download all the SCP goodies with it, makes it look great! :P

See Tureys signature  (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=3428) for FreeSpace 2 Open installer, you may be lucky and be able to get the FreeSpace port (the original FreeSpace ported to the FreeSpace2 engine )through this installer!

Yes, and everything you need to run it.

Just remember to run the OpenAL installer, which comes with the download. You need to install OpenAL to run the game.

You're about to have a great deal of fun.

Ya my friend said it was one of the best games he ever played. He was addicted to the game for about 2 years.

So it is only fair that you try to beat his record.

What can I say, I wanted to be part of the cool quotes club.

Anyway, for a direct link, www.fsoinstaller.com

Go to the downloads section, and get the exe installer unless you have java 6 or greater.  After that, I recommend you set the mod as Freespace Port, we can explain how to do that once you get the game, and play through FS1, then change the mod back to the MediaVPs (easier to understand if you actually see the launcher) and then play through FS2, as what you'll be downloading is Freespace 2 with a mod built into it that will let you play through Freespace 1 with the FS2 technology (graphics etc.).  I can help you with this personally if you have an IM client.  And even if you don't, but it may take a little longer via forums.

And do check out Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ (link in my signature), especially the section about installing mods. It should give you some idea on how to use mods with FSO.

Thank you guys for all the help! When I get off of work I will start the downloading process.

and yes, it is a process.  If you want EVERYTHING, it's over 4 gigs (last I checked.  Could be more).  We've added a lot to the game since the source code's been released.  Many graphic improvements, new features, tons of user-made campaigns, etc.

then change the mod back to the MediaVPs
You don't need to do that any more.
Psycho, if you have an old PC, don't select the MediaVPs in the installer, and if you don't have a fairly fast PC, don't select the Advanced MVPs. The graphics today are WAY better than the ones in the wiki, look at the "Celebration of FreeSpace" thread to see what I mean.

You will still need to change the mod to mediavps or else you'll only get to play with retail data.

I thought that you and Turey decided to put a Mod.INI in the root folder?

AFAIK, you'd still need to select the root folder as the "mod" then, in order for it to recognize it.

All that does is give you information. The idea is that when someone presses the no mod button it tells you how to turn the media VPs back on. It doesn't actually set anything up.
