It's not too hard! Someone link him to Turey's installer? I'm writing a paper and much too lazy to find it. [oh, the irony]
You'll be set up and running in no time.
Also, we really need to make it easier to get FSOpen. I think we need a link in the HLP navigation bar.
-
Well, just go to the Wiki (the link is at the top of this page, in case anyone doesn't know) and search for FSOpen. You'll get to the installer in no time. It may be practical to take a look at the walkthrough here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47045.0.html). I didn't and I can't get FSO to work now :(
-
Turey's Installer is good, but maybe there should also be a Turey's Installer for Dummies that would do the following things:
- Install FSO, when the Installer is run and the Next button is clicked twice. No fuss, no muss.
- Create Start menu entries and a desktop icon for the Launcher.
- Repeatedly remind about OpenAL.
- Hide all the retail executables so that they would never get run.
- Have an extensive manual that explains why OpenGL is good, Enable jpg/tga textures is important and the reason why the player can't see purdy graphiks once he's switched to a mod and back.

The installer is awesome but my stu and spark2 was a bad file, I had to get it from my original disk.
might be worth checking

or, if you don't have internet on your computer but can transfer small files with a thumb drive from a friends computer, download the exe's.

That's what we've tried to say to him. But no. He might have the necessary files but he persistently uses the retail exes, which doesn't help a bit. Then again, I was sceptic too. It took me several months before I dared to try to install FSO. Manually, I might add. No sissy installers for me.
Killer Whale, my man, trust me. Get the executables behind the link Topgun posted and then use Launcher.exe. That's how you play FSO.

Yep, it's the first ship i ever got apart from the Retail ones. I thought it was great, but apparently you've seen enough to be picky.
I've only got a couple of hundred MB on my playing PC left. I only had about 9 gigs to start with by the way, i don't have 3 million programs on there (apparently the salesman said that more than i'd ever need, but no, programs had to get more numerous and bigger).
So i click on the link that guy got me (that um, what is name, oh Topgun, that's it) i click on the first link, oh, i need internet conection on that one, okay, i click on the second and save that to my thumbdrive and when i go on my other computer i open it with winzip (?)
(http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1940/whaaaht8.jpg) (http://img184.imageshack.us/my.php?image=whaaaht8.jpg)
Whaaa? I don't think i did it right, if i did, what do i do next?
-
You need WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) or WinAce (http://www.winace.com/) to extract it.
-
Why didn't anyone say that on the downloady thingy's :doubt:
unless i didn't see it
-
Dude, get 7-Zip (link in my signature) for the following reasons:
1. It's free. Really. No registrations or anything. It's open source, after all.
2. It'll open most archives so you don't need separate programs for every archive types
3. It's small and resource-friendly.

How can you tell how old his PC is? The age of the programs?

I interpret this so that his rig has a roughly 10 gig hard drive. No self-respecting, semi-modern gaming computer came with a 10 gig hard drive these days. Conclusion: his rig is, like, so old.
-
Forgot about that. I was concentrating on the screenshot, which also has pretty old software, another giveaway.
-
To quote from my dad, about, say, "9 years ago" is that old? (notice about, means give or take a year or two)
-
that is extremely old for a computer.
-
Well my computer is older then me. But it's a good rig because it has the latest parts. Perhaps killer whale's rig is the same?
-
yeah well my computer case is also very old. but it has the newest everything. I say it's a new computer.
-

My power supply and hard drive are still very old in mine, but i need to get a new power supply since it isn't strong enough to hold my monster 8800.
-
I don't think anythings changed on mine, apart from a few more programs. And getting rid of the internet (no way we could get a good firewall on the old thing)
-
Indeed. A computer gets old 3 years after purchase. Unless of course you were to upgrade the components regularly, in which case it would stay sort of modern all the time. But, if you have a computer that is 9 years old and has never been upgraded component-wise, it is old. ****ing old. No offence. It's just the truth.
-
My PC will soon be about 2-3 years old - I'm getting a 3 Ghz P4 Extreme and 2 Gb RAM.
-
My whiplash laptop is one year old. I'm just concerned that upgrading it won't be easy, apart from adding RAM.
-
so is anyone goin to help me, or am i screwed
-
any campaigns that i can download with retail would be fine in the meantime if you know of any, i'd prefer not to go over the 100kb limit for missions though (game crashes)
-
There are one or two official campaign missions over that. I don't see how that in itself would cause any crashes.

APC Computer: Starting the loading process
FS2 Loading bar: Two bars done, not much to go, lets get this mission through fast and clean
APC Computer: Can't handle it. Searching for centre of CPU Usage, arm the beam cannons
GTC Killer Whale: No hardrive, no! Just finish the job, i don't care if it takes 5 minutes
APC Computer: Sorry, no can do, found Cause of problem and commensing plasma core insertion, targetting the FS2 Game
Game crashes
FS2 Fred: Okay, this is the FS2 FRED, we are jumping in to try and soften the enemy forces.
a few seconds later
FS2 Fred: This is the FS2 FRED, we are getting smashed out here, requesting immediate assistance. Hull breach on all decks, we've gone critical, help us!! AAAaaahhhh!!!
Booom!!
GTC Killer Whale: There's only one way out of this. *Changes detail to absolute minimum*
Starts game
APC Computer: Okay this load is complete, starting mission
GTC Killer Whale: Well, this detail is terrible, after i get past this mission i'll change it back
APC Computer: Fine, as long as it isn't to hard to process everything, it will be 'A' okay

Get a new rig.

First of all, get CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php). Post screenshots of every window of CPU-Z onto HLP.
To take screenshots, press the printscreen button on your keyboard. (should be near the numpad). If you press ALT+Printscreen, it will only take the currently selected window. Open up a program like MSPaint or IrfanView (PhotoShop or any other image editing prog will work too), click somewhere in the middle of the canvas/screen, and press Ctrl+V. Save the screen as a JPG/PNG, and upload it to Tinypic.com. Repeat with the other tabs of CPU-Z. (be careful of the "SPD" tab, as it has a pulldown menu to select different memory modules, take a screenshot of each module. When you do this, get GPU-Z (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/896/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.1.5.html), and take a screenshot of that. Upload them to TinyPic and use the "IMG code for forums" to post them here.
-
:blah:
I know how to post a screenshot
But i just said cpu cause that's the energy that computers use to load things isn't it?

What's a whiplash laptop? Is it a brand or a description?

In this case, an adjective. Something we came up at highschool.

The original Derelict?
-
As someone a long, long time ago once said "It is finished..." The full Derelict campaign is now completed and available here on the Volition Watch Archives. Kellan and I have certainly enjoyed putting Derelict together, and we certainly hope that after 10 months, it was worth the wait. Enjoy!
I click on the here, and,

... and realise that you really should get FSO. Just the game engine and the Launcher will do. No need for Mediavps if your computer can't handle them. And then just get the SCP'd version of Derelict. And everything will be alright.

Explain yourself.

He's upgraded it constantly. He has an E6850 and a (GTS?).

Me? yeah, but not the processor. My dad won't let me spend that much money, so we got a good dual-core recycled from his work. Works great. had to get a new mother board that supports PCI-E just for the video card.

If I use Mozilla Firefox, which everyone else in the house uses...

Aw crap I forgot Derelict was upgraded for SCP... I was going to suggest since he has SCP just extract all the Derelict files and do a hack job like in the OLD DAYS (TM)... But that won't work now...
Sorta like McCoy putting Spock's brain back in his head without a brain boost machine...
