Title: Other languages
Post by: den5 on January 27, 2008, 11:34:30 pm
1. In strings.tbl are present German and French languages. How to use these languages in game? Are necessary the separate fonts files for them?

2. What program by can edit fonts files and it is necessary-whether for translation into other languages?

From what i remember, you will have to change a few things in the registry key to change the language. I do not know how to do that.

the retail launcher has the setting. if its not obvious what it is, check the freespace entries in the registry (or in the fs open launcher), then change the language setting in the retail launcher. check it again and note the change. that should give you an idea about what setting you need to change and what to change it to. i havent had the retail launcher on my system for a few years now, so i wouldnt know what it is.

The retail launcher has the setting but for some odd reason won't always let you change to German. You can use regedit though.

Change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Volition -> FreeSpace->Language to German.

I thought I already sent you a PM telling you not to do that? Stick the file into your Freespace2\Data\Tables folders.

Do not EVER alter a standard VP file.

it might be a good idea to compile all the 3rd party language packs into their own root level vp file. this pack could also contain perhaps alternate voice acting for each language, keeping the same directory structure but using a filename format such as:
originalfilename-language.ogg

then have the engine use those as alternatives to the original if another language is selected and the file is available (if not it can use the standard one). seems like one of those features which would make freespace more globally accessible.
