Title: Cockpits Redux
Post by: Tolwyn on January 30, 2008, 12:17:22 pm
For this week’s update, we would like to give you a sneak preview of the Longbow cockpit. Although cockpits weren’t included in the prologue campaign, they will be available in the upcoming full release. We have tried to stay as faithful as possible to the original cockpit designs, as seen in Wing Commander 3. In fact, some upcoming code changes in the SCP engine will allow us to do a few things with cockpits that we didn’t think were possible until now… but you’ll have to wait until later to hear more about that. Check out the Longbow cockpit (created by our newest member limdaelp) below:

HAHA!  That is good news indeed.   I was really hoping you guys would work it out.  To me, its just not WC without a cockpit.  Btw, do you still got the Hellcat V cockpit?

I LOVE 3D cockpits! :D

Hey that's a pretty good job. How are you planning on implementing this in mission creation later? (i.e. like the "use autonav animations" radio button in latest FRED builds)

Great work though... can't wait to get my hands on them. And if you make them reflect damage... you'll have my eternal admiration. :-P

Well in my opinion its good that it can't be done I always found that feature annoying.

Really??
I loved it. I just hated one thing: cracks in the front window.

But remember WC1 and WC2, damaged cockpits were cool!

Yeah. Annoying, but realistic enough that it didn't matter :D

Looking at some of the recent advances in the code. Will the Longbow feature its rear turret control, at least from the forward cockpit display panel? (which was a feature in wc3 if I recall correctly)
Title: Re: Cockpits Redux
Post by: Haliwali on February 01, 2008, 07:44:25 pm
No, you had switch to the rear view.

Wasn't that in WC2 (WC1 IIRC)?

Not possible, ace.

How dare you @#$% upon my dreams.   :sigh:

Didn't figure it was even worth the effort, but I always enjoyed the feature.

Actually you did not.  I distinctly remember turning one of the hud monitors into to show the camera facing backwards for the turret

Well, i know you did in WC2, if that helps.

No in wc2 you had to look backward/sidwards to go to the turret cockpit  to fire. Im talking about changing your navcomputor to a remote camera facing backwards.  Which you could in Wc3 with longbow and i think the thunderbolt.  Don't know about wc4 though, as the ps version I played didn't have cockpits.

And judging by some of the recent advances that some of the coders have been playing with, it looks like it will be possible with fs2.

Though the real question is can you switch between damage, weapons, and energy balancing on the left, and target, nav, and  turret  on the right with the 2 single panels like you could in wc3?  I guess they are working on a way.

I don't think anything that drastic has been tried on the HUD before...

I don't remember being able to do that in WC4 though as a kid I never did read the manually properly so there is a chance that it can be done and I simply didn't know about it. Um now where did I put the manual :nervous:

Scrap all that you can

wc3 and 4

You certainly did use that function since you couldn't win the game otherwise. You had to use the tractor beam in several missions to win =)

Looking at from what this guy has done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uFrJlSyXO4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uFrJlSyXO4)
( and he demonstrates the back turret camera in the cockpit as well)
But you see a control wheel move as well. My question is, wouldn't be a simple matter to draw the arm of a hand attached to a flight stick in the middle and, doing similar to what he has done, have that move like wc3?  (Drawing some legs as well)

Did you see the video?  It proves it is possible.  If you can't find the code that he used, or just don't have the time to devote to a minor thing then thats ok.  I was curious if you knew that someone has accomplished the impossible.

Here it is again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uFrJlSyXO4

[EDITED]  on second reading, first take sounded heartless and not what I meant at all.

I love cockpits, because a real starfighter cant just Switch it off. This is called realism.
And yeah it gives the feeling of being in a tight space, not having perfect view about everything going on. Its challenging and i like that feel.

When can we play with cockpits.

Now one more Question. Finally i have to know it. Where does the word Cockpit come from ? because cock-pit.. how does that sound like ? Female parts ?
Title: Re: Cockpits Redux
Post by: Aginor on November 12, 2008, 01:19:30 pm
Well, you know that cock is not only a word for what you are thinking about.
It is somehow likely that it comes from cock fighting pits. (roosters fighting, humans betting, you know)
Or maybe just from the position and structure the cockpit had in former times.

I don't know which is your native language, so here is the english Wikipedia entry for that:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockpit

There is an explanation, which is unfortunately not very large.

If that Wiki entry exists in your language, feel free to check it out on the left side.
For example in german (there is a longer explanation under "Etymologie"):
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilotenkanzel

Maybe it helps.

Cockpits fall into category More dull stuff. (See our website for more details on the subject)

Oh, so they were cut.  :(

If I knew anything about modeling or coding I'd gladly volunteer to do them.  Ah well.  Thanks for the info.
Title: Re: Cockpits Redux
Post by: Tolwyn on October 04, 2009, 04:14:00 pm
Problem is not the modelling. I guess we could get those done within a month. The thing is that the code does not support cockpits in the way we need them to work.

hmmmmm......have you already considered treating the cockpits like in Phophecy and Secret Ops (and it's add-ons) if everything else fails?

Here's a video which should explain what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooIJedGbSsE

Excellent idea. WC4's HUD is one of the best HUDs ever.
