Title: Interplay coming back?
Post by: jdjtcagle on January 31, 2008, 09:43:51 am
to make a sequel to Descent?

Wikipedia:

Quote
Interplay attempting to regain former self

GameSpot reported on November 13, 2007 that Interplay, using money from its sale of the Fallout IP to Bethesda Softworks, is going to restart its in-house game development studio and Interplay has plans on developing sequels to some of its classic IPs contingent on if it can secure financing. Gamespot stated:
“Among the projects Interplay has said it wants to develop are sequels to Earthworm Jim, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK, provided it can find the financing.”

Why not FreeS....  :nervous:

Maybe they figure they dont want to screw up all our custom time lines and that we've actually done a better job?  :)

Yeah, that's it.

I'm guessing that they can't recover Freespace. The source code has been released for 2, and along with the FSUP, most of the game is now free, legal, and better. They'd have to take huge bounds to beat what FSO can do for free, and plus, there is the incredibly small fanbase (which is hostile to even the mention of FS3) which already has several post-FS2 campaigns.

Oh come on, now. Interplay was a great company in the 90s. I would love a Descent 4. And holy ****. Another MDK? That would KICK ASS.

interplay did put out alot of good (and original) games. id rather put up with them than ea for example. of the old games i still own about 10-15 of them were published by interplay. i had many more but i gave them away over the years.

Interplay in its later days basically didn't know what it was doing.  It got confused as to how it should market its games and which games were competing against which other games.  They sometimes seemed to feel that they had one game in their portfolio which was competing against another in their portfolio... in short they were run by the marketing folks who didn't play games and counted numbers.  FreeSpace 2 was a marketing disaster...easily the best rated game of the genre in the magazines and online websites of the time but almost nobody knew it was out and nobody bought it.

If they come back I hope all of those people who made the decisions there are gone because whatever they were doing it seemingly was confused.  Market forces worked in this case and rewarded Interplay by bankrupting the company.  Be interesting if they did come back.

I meant a mercy killing. :lol:

Interplay did publish some great games. I too would liek to see it come back, but I don't think it's even possible anymore.

It'd be interesting to see what happened if Interplay decided to fund an "official" mod for a summer (eg provide full-time jobs for people) or a year (part-time jobs) in exchange for distribution rights. I don't think it's ever been done before, could be some good publicity.

Although come to think of it, CS was done that way, IIRC. :p

From what I understand the Caen morons are still at the helm, driving the company straight into hell.

Interplay is good for me. But if they so much as prod Volition about Freespace 3, I vote we storm the Interplay buildings and kill them. Again.

I don't want FS3. I like the Freespace 2 cliffhanger mumbo jumbo.

If they're going to do it anyway, I'd rather them prod Volition about it than someone else.

I'd only want FreeSpace 3 if I got the rights for it, and had Pletcher tell me their plan for the story.

Otherwise?

No deal.
Title: Re: Interplay coming back?

i wouldnt ming having fs3 to complete the story. however the fs2 engine would still be my primary mod engine. at least untill they released the source and it gets the same overhaul.

Interview with Derek Smart related to what were talking about

Is there a summary for those of us who don't care whether the host is a Mac guy or not?
Title: Re: Interplay coming back?
Post by: jdjtcagle on February 03, 2008, 03:13:49 am
lol... Yeah hold on

EDIT:
FreeSpace licensing

Smart was reported to be seeking to license the FreeSpace IP to develop a game based on the popular space-sim previously published by Interplay. This sparked a controversy between Smart and FreeSpace fans. Gamespot reported that "Following Bethesda Softworks' acquisition of the Fallout license earlier this week, word spread that cash-strapped publisher Interplay is having a franchise fire sale. The rumors of Smart's involvement started when he posed the question, "Would you buy Freespace 3 if I made it?" on the Adrenaline Vault forums. In the next paragraph, though, Smart clarified his supposition stating that he was only "seriously considering" licensing the FreeSpace engine. However, the very possibility of Smart taking over the series generated a strong reaction, prompting a heated exchange between Smart and FreeSpace fans. The controversy was further discussed in a Slashdot article. In a recent All Games Radio interview, Smart stated why he decided to stop pursuing the license and instead start a new (Galactic Command) franchise.

I'm listening right now, so far (30min into it) He hasn't showed yet :p

EDIT2:  He got tired of the noise "petty noise online"  HE SAID SOME kid followed him around and stalked him (found where he lived) and made threats.  They called it the biggest flamewar in history! :lol:

yeah, it really is.  you can beat around the bush, or dance around the barn all you want, but the point is... if a game makes money, they will continue to make sequels.

there's no conspiracy here.  they're aren't not going to make a FS3 because they're getting paid under the table... the fact is that FS2 was a dead loss for them.  companies that are making revenue in the hundreds of millions don't stop and say "but wait a minute, what if NEXT time we try THIS strategy!".  they just don't do that.  they'll focus on games that continue to make them money.

sad but true :-/

Dear Interplay,

FreeSpace SCP Box Set.

Spend a year cleaning up a selection of the best fan-made campaigns including all the 'official' story lines (like FSPort, Silent Threat, Templar, etc), make it totally noob proof. Maybe some extras too. Optimise for co-op 'Net play CS style.

Sell it cheap. Like, really cheap.

Throw some money at HLP etc for running cost (or take over costs for a couple of years)

I'd buy it, if the box art was pretty ;-)

I'd prefer to leave FS3 alone and let our own campaigns fill the void, but methinks Descent IV would be ****ing awesome.

    cin >> FS3;
    if  (FS3 == "volition" || FS3 == "Volition")
    {
        cout << "\nepic win." << endl;
    }
    else

It was a total loss for them because they set it up to happen that way. They did practically no marketing so not enough people were even aware the game existed. There's really no one to blame for this except for their own corperate idiocy.

"corporate idiocy" i believe is the term you were looking for ;)
lol

anyway, now that we're done with blatant hypocricy LOL, sure they probably could've done better, but
a) they won't admit it
b) even if they did, they're not (as i pointed out one post ago) going to take a chance again

Guys you are in the wrong decade! Freespace 3 will be a MMOG where they charge 15 bucks a month and 30 bucks per expansion pack to basically do the same thing as a single player version with multiplayer support! Thats my prediction: the next FS3 is an MMOG with piss poor physics system.
