Title: Light Cruiser/Gunship
Post by: blowfish on February 05, 2008, 09:13:46 pm
Here's something I've been working on for a while.  Its a light cruiser (very light, less than 200m in length) based on the general style (sort of) of StratComm's Terran Fleetpack.  Its made in SketchUp (those of you whose cursors are hovering over the back button, move it away and keep reading).  I need to re-convert it, and I just wanted to know if anyone sees anything they think I should change before I do.

Well anyway, here it is:

Note: Lab shots are shown solely for the purposes of seeing how it looks with lighting etc (which SketchUp does not do), as the POF is nowhere near release condition.

But Sketchup does do lighting, shadows, fog...

Well, sort of, but it doesn't really show reflections, etc, and I just wanted to give people an idea of what it would look like in game.

Ah... not so much a n00b as you had led me to believe...

Oh!  Forgot to mention ... can anyone think of a name for this thing?  As it is, it is called "GTC Crapola" in the tables.

Personally, I would change the engines, since most FS ships have only one size of 'em at the rear. Now, it looks a bit chaotic to me.

But it's a very nice gunship. Put a BGreen in it at the front and give it 60 000 HP, then build a lot of it :drevil:
I'm sure it would give anyone a beating. It could have a Moloch for dinner and a Cain for dessert, if my calculations are correct :D

That was just the style of the engines in StratComm's fleetpack, so I went by that.  They look better when they are all lit up.

Personally I think that those stats are a bit high considering the size (it is 161m long and much smaller than any other cruiser).  I originally had it with an MBlue and 40000 HP, but now I think an SBlue with 30000 would be more appropriate.  Its designed to be small, inexpensive, but can work well in groups as an escort.  Anyway with any medium or heavy beam the beamglow is practically the size of the cruiser!!!

Hmmm, GTC Leto?

GTC Odin?
GTC Thor?
GTC Odysseus?
GTC Ilias?
GTC Sokrates?
GTC Homer (no, not the yellow guy)?
GTC Judicatus?
GTC Jesus?
GTC Hindenburg?
Sorry, it reminds me of a Blimp :P

P.S.: That's an awful lot of engines there. I'd expect like 35 m/s. Now, if these side 'pods' are beam cannons too, I think this thing's overpowered.

LOL I figured.

The side beams are AAAf, not anti-warship beams.  The current armament stands as follows: 1xSBlue, 2xAAAf, 4xStandard Flak, 4xTerran Turret (or something like it).  And yes, it does go very fast.

Maybe, but I sort of like GTC Leto.  Ah well, I haven't really decided yet.

I like GTC Jesus. I think you should name it the GTC Jesus.

Is the design final? Otherwise I think it would rock with some "fins" on the back module, similar to what the corvettes and the carrier have in the fleet pack.

I see what you mean, but I'm not really sure that would work well, as most of those "fins" are on sort of cylindrical shapes, while the back module is more spherical in nature.

This thing is pretty much done, except for LODs and Debris.  Table is done, POF has firepoints and subsystems, but lacks dockpoints.  Collision detection seems to be good.  Here are some in-game pics:

I just applied textures in SketchUp.  Most are projected (If you don't know what I'm talking about, go watch the video tutorials), then export 3ds, import into TrueSpace, edit hierarchy, save SCN, import into PCS2 and do the rest.

It actually is pretty easy. I forget who made this, but it's really useful.

EDIT: This is all done in the Truespace hierarchy editor, BTW.

That is right.  Also note that the lights glued to stuff can be the turret firepoints.
