Title: The Pilot and the AI
Post by: eliex on February 08, 2008, 01:36:44 am

Do you think it would be great if the Freespace universe had a similar function of an GAME,game AI like in the Halo Universe?

As said here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,51724.msg1044661.html#msg1044661), you were probably under the influence when you typed this :p It took me 20 posts to understand what it was about, in that thread... I wonder if I'll do better this time ;)

I think he means an AI that isn't retarded.  Slightly of topic though, someone should make the classic "first sentient AI goes nuts" story for Freespace.  :D

The AI doesn't suck if you play on a high enough difficulty setting...

sentient AI? Next thing we will have one of those 5 alive movies. A AI who has enough humanity and thought to become human, then we treat it like one of our own.

I actually like the idea of "humanish" AIs, (not to be confused with wimpy AIs like those number 5 movies).  One that you can climb into your fighter and say "hey *insert name* ready to blow something up?".  :P

I believe you mean Number 5. Five Alive is a tropical fruit drink. As far as I know it's neither sentient nor nor armed with laser weapons capable of taking out a busload of nuns.....yet. :nervous:

The AI doesn't suck if you play on a high enough difficulty setting...

Plus, if you play on an high enough difficulty setting, your vulnrability doesn't get artificially reduced. (You get more hitpoints, less fighters targetting you etc. at lower difficulty settings, except at Insane where you are treated  like any other enemy fighter)

Bomber pilots try to defend themselves if attacked...that's "human".

Yea, that is SOO true! Command always order fighters to guard the Bombers ALL the time! And bombers have a stupid AI. Everytime a wing of Maras come and launch their Hornets and stuff, they would be like:

Delta 1: 'Loser Shivans! Your missiles are not powerful enough to go through our shield!'
Health integrety falls to 1%
Delta 1: 'Uh oh...'
Delta 1's has been killed by the stupidness of the pilot.

I think trying to dogfight with interceptors(in an almost-real environment where even Alpha 1 will never be able to take out a wing of Maras using an Ursa) is equally stupid.

People like to quote that about the lesser numbers, but it isn't really true from my observations...

Judging by the posts to my initial reply so far, the conclusion that no one got what I tried to say.
Sorry for my lack of clarity.

<remade> Do you think it would be cool if you had an Artificial Intelligience onboard your fighter ( like Cortana, Wellsley etc, from Halo Universe) from your HUD?
Think of all the possibilities . . . hacking, support, company when you are on solo missions?

No sentient AIs please. Leave that for Halo. I like my FS the way it is. I just want to see more of it.

Who?

343 Guilty Spark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Halo_characters#343_Guilty_Spark). He's quirky, funny, cracks jokes and shoots people with laser beams. He's definitely not the winner on the evil scale but he's just damn hilarious.

I don't get the Fukai reference :( but anyone here seen the (pretty poor but i still love it) wing commander movie? Every fighter has a MERLIN system which is fully voice controlled and has full military network access. Even classified  intelligence data, assuming you could catch a fighter intact and hack it the benefits would be obscene. But i digest. (Name that reference)
