Title: Freespace running too fast...help!!!
Post by: kalahari on February 09, 2008, 11:20:11 am
Trying to play freespace 2 on my new computer, unable to play it because the computer AI is too fast.  I have a Quad core processor and Nvidia 8800GTX card.  I think the internal routines in the engine are not adopting to the quad core configuration and the game is running way too fast.

Almost feels like the old days when I tried playing wing commander on a 486.  The mission was over in a few seconds because the computer was too fast.  freespace adjusts somewhat, but it almost seems like it does not slow down enough.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

FS2 retail or FS2_Open?

Most likely the easiest fix is to download and run FS2_Open instead of retail FreeSpace2, if that is what you're using...

shift+left arrow a few times....

using freespace open 3.6.9.

Tried shift left arrow.  I believe it helps.  Thanks, SA

also, enable cheats and you can use time compression to slow down to 0.25 times normal.

Actually I think what's more likely is that your time compression is too high.

Press Shift and < a few times until the number in the bottom right hand corner goes down to x1.

Also, try using Ctrl+Alt+Del while Freespace is running, right clicking on the Freespace exe file and selecting affinity,  then try seeing if you can reduce the number of CPUs assigned to the game, that may help if it turns out not to time compression issues.

1. How do you enable cheats?
2. The Alt -Ctrl-Del and setting the affinity to just 1 processor worked.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

I think the AI just had too much processing power.  1 processor limit made the game return back to normal.

Thanks you very much!

EDIT: For the sake of Mobius.......
NOTE TO KALAHARI: Look at the spoilers at your own risk! Mobius might hunt you down...

Spoiler:
Well, before I answer your question, you are actually the first person to start playing FS2 WITHOUT first looking at the cheat sectrions in the wiki (I did btw:P)

Well, to enable cheat, type

www.freespace2.com

while holding this button (sorry for the crookedness)

Why? Do you consider the usage of cheats such a horrible thing? Bah, you are a strange person.

I have yet to see or use a cheat in Fs1 or FS2, and so far I've killed and been killed and had more fun than a kid with a sugar bag.

And I have yet to play Freespace without having the cheats active each mission. I play on Insane though to counterbalance that a bit.

It is a terrible thing. I have never used cheats. My kills and my victories are always achieved...conventionally. Same thing for my losses.

What's the point in using cheats, anyway? I prefer a terrible defeat over the use of cheats.

They're like drugs. I don't start using them because I now that I will never finish.

I prefer a victory to having to replay a ten minute mission because I missed a single bomber. The only reasons I'm still with FreeSpace are the story and modding aspects. The ''shoot down bombers and their escort wings'' scheme is annoying so I skip it most of the time.

And what if the player is supposed to move near the bombers to trigger important events? What if the waving of bombers is connected to important events? Shooting them down with cheats might compromise the mission.

Well...it's a matter of point of views. As FREDder I would like to see a "deactivate cheats" mission option and or SEXP(in that case there should be a "reactivate cheats" SEXP, too).

Well, in that case I would just make the targets I am supposed to protect invulnerable and shoot down the bombers in a normal way.

Do what :v: did with FS. If you enter www.volition-inc.com/www.freespace2.com in their respective games, you fail the mission.

I'm refering to custom campaigns. A few of my escort missions are designed in a way that makes them strange if you use cheats. It's obvious...I don't use cheats so my FREDding "reflects" me.

That's what I'm saying. Look at the :v: missions, and find out what they did to make cheats = failure.

That was hard coded into the FS engine and then later removed in FreeSpace 2.

You can get something using FRED, the self-destruct SEXP is useful when something that "shouldn't happen" happens...
Title: Re: Freespace running too fast...help!!!

You will then get a lot of threads asking how to modify the mission to enable cheats, though.
Title: Re: Freespace running too fast...help!!!
Post by: Mobius on February 10, 2008, 12:28:49 pm
I'll go with one example: the Megaera in INFA SA. You can't take it out with cheats and proceed. Events and mission objectives are strictly connected to it(waypoints, destroyed ships, etc. etc.).

A FREDder already has to consider all possible circumstances. Add "what if the player triggers a cheat between part x and part x+1 of the mission?" and FREDders will face extinsion.

So they cheat. If they **** up the campaign as a result that's their own problem.
Title: Re: Freespace running too fast...help!!!

Yep, that's why I only use cheats that affect me in sensitive missions.

From other members' comments I assume that a FREDder who doesn't think about cheats will only have to justify his actions in many threads.

Why don't the coders disable cheats, then?
Title: Re: Freespace running too fast...help!!!
Post by: General Battuta on February 10, 2008, 01:05:07 pm
Or just leave them in and allow the player to deal with the consequences.

An easy 'you cheated, your fault' answer would become common knowledge quickly enough.

It's better to allow the player choice and to let them handle the consequences than to simply remove the choice.

It doesn't make sense. In campaigns full of campaign variables/wide use of is-previous-event-true|false. Try to play something like Derelict and realize in mission...36...that you can't proceed because of your cheats. Will you find that interesting?

As FREDder I'd like to prevent such potential episodes. If taking in consideration cheats is too much, try to avoid their use or create campaigns full of action with SHORT escort missions(which are, as far as I know, the problem).

As I said if someone cheats and causes problems in the mission that's their own fault. I'm sure there are all kinds of ways people can screw up my missions by cheating and frankly I couldn't care less. One thing I'm not doing is disabling cheats though. That's just idiotic.

Why all that trouble? Just say "Using cheats may cause unspeakable horrors, never-before-seen pain and demonic misery. Be a man and play without cheats." in the release thread and possibly in the readme.

I rarely if ever have trouble caused by cheating. It's not that I activate cheats and then proceed to blow everything up with my cheated BFreds.
Most of the time I just make myself invulnerable and give myself unlimited ammunition. Oh and before anybody thinks I am a lousy player, I played through both the FS1 and the FS2 Main campaigns on medium without cheats.

Can you please forget JAD for one moment? If the mission designer wants the player to do or not to do something succeeds. Full stop.

Umm, no. And who said anything about JAD? There are cases even in the FS2 campaign. Take Exodus, for example. :v: couldn't prevent the player from saving the Nebtuu.

In JAD Alpha 1 > FRED :P

Please don't mention FS1/FS2 missions, :v: didn't have advanced SEXPs and they could have easily scripted "this must happen!" events.

Only cheats I ever use are the one to list all the missions in a campaign file in the tech room and making myself invincible to help with mission testing.  Of course I just do the second one in FRED.  It's also very useful for taking screen shots.
