Hey all, I'm in the middle of a serious upgrade to my desktop and I was wondering what people's experience has been with FSO and Vista (esp. 64 bit Vista). I'm currently moving from 32 bit XP to Vista Ultimate 64-bit and was wondering if anyone has had serious or unsolvable problems? I wanna be sure to be able to still play FSO.

Gooing to vista is not an upgrade but a downgrade IMO. I have Vista and it kinda crashes the game. No to mention the vid card once in a while. or rather the drivers for the vidcard even if they are "vista ready " So dont go there keep on to the XP and get the lastest SP3 for it :D

I run FSO on Vista 32-bit, and it has given me no problems whatsoever.

I've been 'test-driving' vista on my laptop for awhile now. I think I've figured out how to tweak it well enough, but its still a 32 bit OS on the laptop. I still have my XP install CD so if Vista gives me too many problems on the desktop I can always up/down grade back to XP. But since XP is gonna be dropped relatively soon at least this way I'll have Vista available.

I installed Vista Home Premium x64 over the weekend and it's been running great. FSO works perfectly, very smooth and no glitches or anything. As long as you get the latest certified drivers for your video card (look for WHQL tested drivers) and sound card you should do fine.
Also run Windows Update before you do anything with Vista, as it will fix up a lot of little bugs and compatibility problems =]

Well i have windows vista ultimate 64 ! And well for all the adequate features put on it its not worth it. Hell i have the latest updates on everything. And i must say its a resource hungry son of a b**ch . Hell i have 2 GB of DDRII on it and it takes by default with no programs installed 1 GB of RAM . And when i sart really working that sistem i must say i can ehar everihthing screek and yell in pain beacause of starvation for more resources. And that is just ridiculous. Sure if you happen to have a quadrive sistem and 4 GB of RAM then you dont have a problem but with a COre2Duo youls have some problems especialy if you try and play something which really starts to put your sistem in the red . I play FS on maximu details and all the cool little thingi stuff there on.
This in turn its a bit of resources and with vista well lets just say its not such a good mix.
Also XP will be used for some time now since its the most reliable OS from Microsoft . And its SP3 which in turn makes it also 15% faster from what i heard over on the net should ensure us a pleasurable experience for some time now.
So dont go Vista unless you are ready for some trouble later on the road.
Ive had hell thrown at me from Vista when playing FS especialy the campaigns.

the question is not whether or not vista sucks or not (we all know the answer to that). the question is should x64 builds be compiled. cause you also have 64 bit xp as well as vista, you also have 64 bit linux as well.
i run a 64 bit operating system and id say maybe 10% of the software running on it right now is 64 bit (not parts of windows but 3rd party apps and some drivers). 32 bit runs fine on 64 bit most of the time anyway. i have no problem running freespace as 32 bit. it seems to work just fine.
