Title: Viewing the ships?
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on February 15, 2008, 10:51:51 pm
Hey, I tired to run TBP but got some sort of error, which is okay because my graphics card is integral and not so hot.
Even so, I'd like to have a look at the various ship models in TBP but when I tried to open up Root.vp with Modelview it complained that it had too many files or something. What are other people using to look at the ships or VPs? My modelview is V1.0 Beta 05 (Build 28) fyi

    Thanks

You need a newer version because of the size the VP.   I know there is a thread around here somewhere about it.

On a related topic, I did look at the VP with VPView to see what ships were in there, and man "Battlecrab"? Why do people use that term. Makes me want to throw myself on the business end of a dull, rusty sword.

My guess is they look like crabs.  Also that's what is in the Wiki.

       Thanks for the link.
A crab? Oh . . . . . kay. If they look like any living thing they'd be a spider, that's what Keffer describes them as "cross between a spider and our worst nightmare". Battlecrabs is just some fan term which came up for no apparent reason and was subsequently written into Wikipedia by some other fan person because that's what other fans were calling it.

Let's revise one thing: are you trying to open a vp with Modelview? That can't be good. You need a vp viewer/editor to open vp files and extract files from it. Then you can use Modelview to observe the models you just extracted. I'd recommend Maja, since it is cross-platform and can also easily open large vp files. Search the forums or check the Wiki to find it.

Yeah, modelview. Because before you could just open up a VP with Modelview and look at all the ships in one big list. But evidently the VP for B5Core is a little too large for that to work or something, so I guess I'd have to extract them first to see what they look liek.

Oh, nevermind. Where TBP 3.3 failed to run on my computer for some reason, version 3.4b or whatever the newest thing is seems to work fine. Or at least I can look at the techroom.  Though I suspect the missions won't really run on my computer, or at least they'll run until someone starts throwing around bombs or a large ship explodes creating a similar shockwave. That crashes the hell out of FSOpen on my computer until I can afford a real graphics card.

And man there's 3 "Battlecrabs"? Gah, where's a rusty sword when you need one. The tail on the Primus also looks WAY too long, but I haven't watched the show in a while so who knows. Otherwise looks nice, though I'd be curious to know how the Xill works since it probably cant fly that fast in the game being a hugeass ship and all. (well, not huge. But it's probably Fenris sized at least)

Yes, switching from 3.2 or 3.3a to 3.4 solves an unbelievable amount of problems, issues and what not.

There were Battlecrabs of varying size in the show. This is how that feature is implemented in TBP.

Oh I don't have a problem with 3 different sizes . . . it's a little bit of a cheat, but understandable. Especially considering Into the Fire which was super rushed and consequently created all kinds of scaling errors. I just don't like the name "Battlecrab" listed 3 times, hahaha. If I ever do some TBP missions, which is a huge and unlikely IF, I think I'll change the class name in my individual missions.

Nah, I'm a B5Wars player, so I'd probably use similar designations like Cruiser or Dreadnought. Or "Unknown Vessel" at first (B5wars is a geeky little game for B5, and is where some of the designs like the Bin'Tak, Poseidon, Halik, Tashkat are from . . .). I mean the Vorlons have living ships, and they're given standard military designations. Why would the Shadows be any different?

I'm sorry, but all this discussion about battlecrabs has forced me to interject an almost-non-sequitur...

"Craaaab people, craaab people, tastes like crab, talks like people..."

:D
