Title: Crash on startup
Post by: Kingdaddy on February 16, 2008, 09:32:23 am
Any help would be appreciated. I followed the advice on this thread already:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48277.0.html

I've played around with different graphic settings, turned the sound off...So far, no luck.

Here's the information from the error log:

fs2_open_r caused an Access Violation in module d3d8.dll at 001b:6d9d5c6b.

Error occurred at 2/15/2008 22:05:26.

In the launcher's video tab switch from D3D8 to OpenGL.

Oh and while you're at it upgrade to version 3.4b if you haven't already.

Unfortunately, I'm already using 3.4b, and the switch to OpenGL didn't solve the problem.

Waitwaitwait.

fs2_open_r caused an Access Violation in module d3d8.dll at 001b:6d9d5c6b.
fs2_open_r is a debug build, right? Have you tried other builds? If you have 3.4b, there should be at least fs2_open_3_6_9 that you can use.

FS2_Open_r is the name we used to use for release builds. AFAIK TBP didn't ship with any builds with that name though. I regularly update my builds for dev purposes but mine are all called FS2_Open_3_6_9_xxxxx

Which makes we wonder if this really is a 3.4 install. And that's before we get to the fact that I'm fairly sure 3.4b used one of my BtRL builds and they won't even run D3D in the first place. It's easy to check. The builds I made for TBP have a B5 icon rather than the Freespace2 one everyone else's builds do.

Here's the URL to what I downloaded (based on a pointer in these forums):

http://tbp.freespacemods.net/TBP_v3.4b.exe

The fs_open_3_6_9.exe, fs_open_3_6_9_INF.exe, and their two debug equivalents all have the B5 logo. In the same directory are fred2_open_3_6_9.exe, fred2_open_3_6_9_INF.exe, and the two debug pairs, all of which have the Freespace icon.

Here's the directory listing:

Things just got interesting. Your listing doesn't even include the said fs2_open_r.

Run the launcher and make sure it's pointing at fs2_open_3_6_9.exe and try again. The D3D8 option will still be in the launcher but it definitely shouldn't give you that error on a crash. You should switch to OpenGL anyway though. Just so you remember which one you're running.

Thanks for trying to help, but the crashes keep on coming. Followed your advice, even after uninstalling and re-installing. The last crash left the following error log entry:

fs2_open_3_6_9 caused an Access Violation in module fs2_open_3_6_9.exe at 001b:00663da2.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 2/19/2008 22:14:52.

1 processor(s), type 586.
1024 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location 03cbc940 caused an access violation.

I'm ready to give up.

You're actually running the right executable now then. My suggestion to you - give up. The game engine clearly doesn't like your machine.

Speaking of which, Kingdaddy, would you mind posting your computer specs?

Why do you have a ships.tbl in the main folder while we're at it? And you shouldn't have a launcher.ini file either. Are you sure you wiped all the old TBP stuff from your machine before installing 3.4b? Cause it still seems to be appearing.
