This is my version of the Battle of Deneb. I have attempted to explain cuscene/game inconsistencies...Other than those caused by the limitations of the FS1 Game Engine. I have also attempted to Make the Battle of Deneb what it should have been.
In my opinion, the battle of Deneb was the biggest Battle of the Entire Great War. It was battle that in my opinion crippled the GTA/PVN forces to critical. Think of it as the Alliance's "Battle of Hoth" but with the Battle of Endor Scale and you should get my meaning. This time line is an attempt to give the battle that sort of scale
17:05 - The GTD Bastion is pulled from its position in system to counter shivan attempts to enter the Alpha-centauri Node. They are also to act as a port for suvivors from the main battle.
17:10 - The "forward fleet group" - a formation of 12 Leviathans, 8 Fenris, 5 Atens and ten support Units (Freighters given stronger weapons to act as gunships) - engages the approaching shivan Fleets.
17:20 - The fleet formation is decimated by the Shivans leaving the PVD Hope wide open to attack
17:25 - The PVD Hope is crippled by the Shivan Attack and left as a dead derelict. The survivors everntually manage to "jury-rig" some makeshift repairs and escape.
17:35 - The GTD Legion - A destroyed of GTI origins - and its support group enters the frey. Over the course of the next 15 minutes the tiny fleet are devestated by the approaching SSD Lucifer. Several Civilian vessels attempting to flee the area also get caught in the mix (That Faustus)
17:50 - The GTD Legion is reduced to a dead hulk by the Lucifer's Beam cannons. Nearby the PVD Covenant gives chase to the SD Eva.
18:00 - The PVD Covenant goes down, but not before taking out the SD Eva's fighter and cruiser support
18:10 - Terran Bombers from the GTD Galatea Engage the SD Eva
18:20 - Shivan forces assualt the GTD Galatea. The Galatea's support group is quickly wiped out.
18:25 - The SD Eva is Destroyed by the Galatea Pilots
18:30 - Player arrives in support of the Galatea
18:40 - The GTD Galatea is Destroyed by the SSD Lucifer
18:45 - In a Last-ditch attempt to Stop the Lucifer, Surviving Terran and Vasudan Forces rally at the Deneb-Vasuda Jumpnode attempting to blockade it.
18:50 - The Lucifer tears through the blockade and enters the Jump Node
19:00 - The Lucifer Enters the Vasuda System
Explaining the Ursas - These Ursas were initial prototypes being R&Ded by the GTD Legion. They were originally designed to be high ordinace bombers. Bombers that were capable of carrying a large amount of warheads -ie, to carry many Tsunami Bombs. However, it was quickly determined that the Usra was better suited to the carrying high-yield payload - the Harbinger. Thus the entire batch was withdrawn from service and began the modifications into the Ursa we love/hate.
Note: When i refer to a support group, i mean a cruiser wing that flies escort to a destroyer...Sort of like those cruisers Escorting the Bastion in Clash of the TitansII

FYI: The Pinnacle survives at least to the whole "Beta Aquilae Comm Station" mission... if the Hope is killed, the Pinnacle takes its place.
-
Does it? I nver knew that. I always manage to save the Hope. Since i have NEVER EVER seen this I count the pinnacle's survival as non-canon.
In fact i call it is as canon as that second cruiser in "The Sixth Wonder" in FS2 -- you know that one that only appears if you use cheats to destroy the corvette - since it only aapears with cheats - i dont count it as a canon ship.
-
This is true, I lost the Hope once and had the Pinnacle. Oddly the mission couldn't complete the Pinnacle got stuck or something.

17:20 - The fleet formation is de
Oh, no! Not the invincible formation *de*! :shaking:
-
 Whoop
Fixed. Thanks
-
gah

Now that you mentioned it, there are several 'Galeteas on the event list as well.
-
are there? .Im refering to the same ship
-
18:20 - Shivan forces assualtt the GTD Galetea. The Galetea's support group is quickly wiped out.
18:25 - The SD Eva is Destroyed by the Galetea Pilots
18:30 - Player arrives in support of the Galetea
I know it's the same ship but I like to nitpick about typos that either are in names or effectively change the meaning of the word
-
oh. oops :eek2: thats what i get for making a late night post
:fixed
-
It's no biggie. In fact, it doesn't even take a late night to post random typos. Just yesterday afternoon I typed rescue with a q. And I still don't know why.
-
Lets move away from the debate about language, we can discuss this untill the cows come home in the General Discussion Section, and get back to the point of this thread. What do you guys think of my interpretation of the Battle of Deneb?
-
Pinnacle needs to survive.
-
Fine then, i'm renaming it to the Covenant
-
Pinnacle needs to survive.
That's rather picky, eh?
-
Yeah. Ive never seen the Pinnacle in the second half of the game
-
By that i mean...after the The third Ancients Cutscene
-
Hmm, okay, you might have a point.
-
I only saw the so-called "exciting" part of the Battle of Deneb in the FreeSpace 2 intro. I think your intepretation's quite well done. :)
-
Thanks. To me the Battle of Deneb was the absolute peak of the great war. Its sort of hard to describe...Let me put it this way...I Think that if you ignored Vasuda, Deneb was the largest loss of life in the GW.

...yes, I think I would agree with you on that...although the losses due to the Battle of Deneb is nothing as compared to the losses from Vasuda.
-
I wholey agree. The Losses in Deneb were nothing compared to Vasuda, But ignoring Apocalypse Scale Events my point stands
Well Strictly speaking, I count The Battle of Deneb and The Fall of Vasuda as 2 phases of the same engagement...
In Fact, I think some major combat went on in the Vasuda System. Think the 'Battle of the Line' from the Earth-Minbari war in B5 or The Drakh Attack only they got the Death Cloud to Earth.
-
Just imagine every single ship that had a lazer turret on Vasuda Prime, out to defend their world. It's horrible to think of. It was such a tradgety. Heartless bastards on the Lucifer. ****ing shivans.
-
...However, it was quickly determined that the Usra was better suited to the carrying high-yield payload - the Tsunami. the entire batch was withdrawn from service and began the modifications into the Ursa we love/hate.
Don't you mean the HARBINGER?
-
:jaw: I'd completly missed that.
:Fixed
-
I'd say the Battle of Deneb was a larger battle than Vasuda, but more civilian Vasudans lost their lives in the Battle of Vasuda.
-
Uhm...how do you know it?
-
I don't. It's my opinion.
-
In the Battle of Deneb there was a considerable presence of Terrans. The Battle of Vasuda might have been a larger engagement during which there were only Vasudans fighting the Shivans.
-
I remember hearing that the Vasudans wanted to head off the Shivans in Deneb rather than fight in their own system.
-
In short i'd reckon that having ones homeworld razed tends to affect the civilian population. Most Zods are 2nd gen refugees anyway don't forget.
-
Depends on the situation.
"We can't save our homeworld, we'll try to defend the nearest system!"
and...
"We'll do everything we can to stop them here!"
The second option is more Vasudan.
-
Depends. There could be another situation:
Either: "They shall not enter our system! Stop them here! :headz:" or "By the gods, they have too many ships! Retreat to Vasuda and hope they don't follow us! :nervous:"
The former option is more Vasudan. It depends, really, but canon dictates the former is what the Vasudans did...
-
They were defending their homeworld AND billions of civilians. And they were Vasudans. There's no need to discuss this aspect anymore.

There's no need to discuss this aspect anymore.
Agreed.
