Title: FreeSpace Open vs. retail
Post by: The_cranky_hermit on February 23, 2008, 12:22:54 pm
Does FreeSpace Open have any disadvantages at all over FS2 retail? If someone had never played FS2 before, and they got the game and just used FreeSpace Open, would they be missing out on anything at all that they would get to experience in retail FS2?

And what about the FSPort mod? How does this compare to FS1 retail? Any reason that a FreeSpace purist would prefer retail FS1 over the FSPort?

Basically, I'm trying to determine if the retail executables for the original FreeSpace games can be considered disposable in the same way that the DOS versions of DOOM and Quake are.

There are some disadvantages. Some old mods are incompatible, and there are a few (very minor but still annoying) bugs in FS2 Open. I've got two installations of FS2, one with retail and one with FreeSpace Open.

FS1 is different from the FSPort but the latter is better.

IMO.

The only reason I can possibly think of that a "purist" would like FS1 retail over the Port is if they liked FS1's nebulae (the Port uses FS2 nebulae IIRC, which look much better).

In general, the only bugs you'll find are extremely minor. Unless you use a really recent version of FSOpen, which of course are not completely tested (such as the XT builds). And FSOpen improves upon the original graphics to no end. Nothing in the storyline itself was changed in the making of FSO, so the missions are practically identical to their originals... they just look prettier now.

However, I believe a retail installation is still required for FSOpen to run properly, so I would advise against deleting the old executables.

You wouldn't miss a thing except for the nostalgia of playing in lower resolution with worse graphics. :D Strangely some people seem to believe that's worth it.

I've got two installations of FS2, one with retail and one with FreeSpace Open.

I can't think of any good reason to do that unless you actually wanted to waste >1GB of disk space given that retail will run with no errors from the same folder FS2_Open is in.

It's because my brother's making a retail mod. :P

Besides it doesn't matter since it's on another (busted up) computer.

the Red Alert bug is the worst bug in FSO, and it's really easy to work around if you have VPView and either Notepad or FRED.

Only thing i miss about the original FS in the fsport was the old HUD, which isn't in fsport, IIRC.

There was a difference in the HUD's?

FS1's HUD had more baubles, and the central elements formed three arcs in a circle rather than two arcs wide apart. It also had less color customizability. I prefer it over FS2's.

FS1 has a different "vibe" for me when playing it than FS2 or FSPort does. It's more primitive, but it's colder and gloomier, kind of like the storyline.

I just liked the way the FS1 HUD looked. It also had indicators on the side of the right bar (the bar running almost vertically to the right of the reticule) that showed you with triangles what banks you had equipped and weather somebody was shooting at you, which i found surprisingly helpful.

I am a purist, id say try the origionals, then after, get SCP. Id perfer FS1 over FSport IMHO.

And hell, i think FS2 regular is more stable then laggy SCP...atleast for me. Depends on the hardware, tho my computer IS decent and it lags like hell in cap fights..or mjlor beams

But the FS Port allows you to go beyond FS1...

So does his mean we get the old interface?

I liked the older one better.
