Grrr...i've been having a lot of trouble with my widescreen tv lately. It is a 26 inch LCD screen at 16:9 ratio from Insignia.
My problem is that the system refuses to accept the fact that my screen can switch from 16:9 to 4:3 with literally the press of the button on my remote, so it refuses to let me display 4:3 ratio resolutions such as 1024X768. Though this can easily be fixed by checking "display modes that this monitor cannot display" (which is a lie, since my monitor can very well and nicely display 1024X768 and other 4:3 resolutions just fine if i put it in 4:3 mode), I still can not play games that do not support widescreen, such as battlefield 2, no matter what I do. Those games that will play but don't support widescreen, such as freelancer (which is the biggest symptom of my problem) won't let me increase the resolution above 800X600 (because apparently that resolution is universal or something). I've tried everything from fiddling with the DPI, refresh rate, nvidia display optimization wizards, windows troubleshooters, and the like, and i still can't get anything done. Can somebody help??
The settings i normally use are:
1366X768 resolution @60 hz - Even though my settings say it's at 1360X765, my monitor display feature says i'm running with the 8 extra pixels. 1366X768 is the highest resolution my TV supports. 1366X768 is somehow availible when i check "display modes that this monitor cannot display", though, which means windows is again *****ing at something that my monitor is perfectly capable of doing.
120 DPI - I use it because the normal DPI size (96 DPI) is a bit to small for me. changing that didn't help anything
my video card is a Nvidia 8800 GTS.
Right now i'm using a VGA output, but i'm actually getting a YPbPr male-to-male cable to go from my computer to my TV, since my 8800 came with a special adapter for HD output. Will that cable affect anything?
hope that info went to solving this problem. Thanks in advance for help!

Well, you can get freelancer to work in widescreen mode, with minor problems. Read this (http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=283) (the whole thread) and this (http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=93740&highlight=freelancer). You could also use the same ini hacking to try to force a higher 4:3 resolution. It might not work, but it's worth a try.
You can do the same with BF2. See this thread (http://www.rage3d.com/board/archive/index.php?t-33820626.html). Even if widescreen mode doesn't work correctly, you might be able to force a 4:3 resolution.

Thanks for the help!
Still, i'm looking for a universal solution, since i get this with other games as well.

The Nvidia control panel supposedly has a custom resolutions feature, but I can't find it under vista. That might let you force a 4:3 resolution like the checkbox, except it should work with games too.

I tried that, it won't even save my resolution when i click "ok", and when i set a custom resolution to 1024X768 and press test, nothing happens at all except a window pops up and tells me that the resolution changed even though nothing happened.
By the way, the freelancer tricks you referred me to don't even work. The game is still stretched across the screen at 800X600, and the hud objects are floating away out of place.
The battlefield 2 fix doesn't even work at all.
