Title: good side scroller engines

me and some friends are making a strategy rpg similar to fire emblem. i
t will have fire emblem stile battles and zelda-crossed-in-between-with-shiningforce gameplay between battles.
it's kinda hard to explain.
we need to find a good game engine that fits are needs. know of any?
if we can't find one we will use gamemaker lite as it seems to be the only good option.
