Title: "beyond the cause" campaign?
Post by: starlord on February 28, 2008, 06:03:58 am
Hello, starlord here:

I was just woundering if it could be possible for someone to give me this campaign. Appearantly, it is the only one expanding on the "what happened to bosch" question.

thank you for your replies.

regards.

Technological Superiority did that briefly as well, for the record.

no, I think you mean: technological superiority "started" to do this well too. Unfortunately, much to my bitter sorrow, it never finished (I tried to contact arnav everywhere including ICQ: no go).

So, anyone has the beyond the cause campaign so I can drown my sorrow?

Here you go.  A copy of beyond the cause.  As far as I know compatible with FS2 retail and with FSOpen.

Macfie, you always are here when it comes to preserving campaigns it seems. Thank you!

I would advise to preserve this one in the hades combine.

Anyone care to post a review of this campaign?

Well. It works fine (or seems to anyway) with FSO. But its not really a good campaign by current standards. The combat is too not-believable for my taste (invasion of the invincible capital ships, followed shortly thereafter by 'drones kill entire NTF fleet with some help from Alpha 1') Nothing wrong with the story, but thats not everything.

It's a pity that we don't see more campaigns on this theme. It would be great to hear one's hypotheses on the bosch enigma, no?

I've played through it. Not the best fan campaign I've played. The writing isn't great, and the dodgy grammar started to bug me. Some of the ship captains seemed rather immature. The plot was OK, but didn't resolve anything about ETAK. It was also a bit clichéd, and some elements IMO unfolded poorly. It finally declared a plan to construct two Colossus per system for defence  :doubt:

The very first mission has an outrageously heavily armed Deimos. Although bombers and torpedoes are available in ship select, this Deimos is also invlunerable, although its turrets can be killed.

The last mission didn't work correctly. One of the events failed, and I had to cheat to fix it.

One mission had waves of bombers without escort, most of which would ignore the capital ships and chase fighters.

Another mission required a friendly cap ship to fall below 99% health to continue, and had 90 wings of 4 Basilisks to do it (minus the 9 wings it took to destroy a Charybdis) . My wingmen and I however were able to camp on their (very close by) spawn points, and slaughtered all 360 of them before they could fire. I had to damage the cap ship myself - after checking the mission file to see what was supposed to have happened.

Waves triggered by the death of the previous waves, with no extra delay, were very common. A couple of missions had AI ships playing bumper cars. One had ships not quite docking with a (rotating IIRC) asteroid base.

There was also an enemy ace portrayed using an invulnerable fighter, which challenged my suspension of disbelief. It had to kill a wing of fighters for the mission to continue, and I had to ignore it for it to do that.

Edit: It also makes no mention of Bosch's fate.
