Hi,
I'm new here. When my friend lent me FreeSpace 2 a few years back I really enjoyed it and lately longed to replay the great game.
I found this link http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39499.0.html thanks to google.
I downloaded the bit-torrent and ran the installer, however, I am unable to start the game as I get this error message:
Error: Unrecogzined command line parameter -glow
File:H:\_FS2_DEV\3 VPK\code\Cmdline\cmdline.cpp
Line: 393
Call stack:

FS2.exe 004f9a06()
FS2.exe 004f9b79()

FS2.exe 00409232()
FS2.exe 005ec635()
kernel32.dll 7c816fd7()
------------------------------------------------------------------
I checked the pinned thread but:
I did install OpenAl
I didn't select to switch from Generic Software to anything else from the Launcher's Audio tab, but "generic software" doesn't even appear
If someone could help me out I'd really, *really* appreciate it.
Thanks =)
EDIT: I realised that if I continued to click okay several times, the familiar freespace 2 screen runs! I was very excited to see this but as it turns out the most I could do is view some information in the tech room, whenever I tried to play the campaign it asked me to insert CD2.
Also, the mission simulator didn't work =(

Error: Unrecogzined command line parameter -glow
That doesn't sound good. -glow is probably one of the most important thingies graphicswise. What version of the Launcher do you have? And what build? I've never heard anything good regarding that ShivanSpS's Pack. Try the following: get Launcher 5.5c (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/Launcher55c.7z), fs2_open_3_6_9 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html) and the 3.6.8 Zeta mediavps (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html). Remove the previous Launcher from your \freespace\ folder and put the new one in. Place the 3.6.9 executables into the \freespace\ folder and the mediavps to \freespace\mediavps. Then, open the new Launcher, hit the Browse button and locate fs2_open_3_6_9.exe. Then, make sure that you have the \mediavps\folder selected in the MOD tab. Hit Apply, then Run. Should work.
Edit: Oh, wait. Have you been trying to run FS2.exe? Don't do that. In the world of FSO, the only acceptable executables are Launcher.exe and fs2_open_---.exe
-
FS2.exe
That's your problem.
What you're trying to do is run the retail FS2.exe, which (obviously) won't work with all the stuff that it's trying to use. It won't recognize most of the command lines that the Launcher.exe is trying to make it use, and high detail models won't work with it either.
Open the Launcher.exe and select a fs2_open_*.exe (most likely 3.6.9 version would be preferable to begin with, as it is the latest official and thus most supported and bug-free build) as executable to run. That will most likely work mucho better.

Hi,
first off thanks for taking the time to respond, that's really kind of you.
I opened launcher.exe, clicked browse and I found I had a choice between
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Twelling/FShelp.jpg)
I selected the bottom one, "fs2_open_r_20060425_Kara.exe"
Clicked apply, but when I click run, I am struck with yet another error message
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Twelling/FShelp2.jpg)
And upon clicking okay...
If I click yes it takes me to a dead link =(
Please help me, I wanna play this soo badly.
Thanks in advance!

Our reputation as a newbie-friendly community would suffer severely if we didn't bother to help those in distress.

1. 2006 equals old. Get 3.6.9, as I suggested.
2. _r_ is one indicator for a debug build, which will give an error message every time an error occurs, even if the error doens't actually affect the gameplay.
Edit: And get the newer Launcher as well.

Hi,
well I went here
http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/
and downloaded Fs2_3_6_9.exe, placed it in my FreeSpace 2 Folder and then
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Twelling/FShelp4.jpg)
selected it via launcher.exe -> browse
However, upon clicking run it still gives me an error message:
EDIT: Wait, I just read your edited note to get the new launcher, I will look for that right away.
Is the launcher.exe found here suitable?

Seems to be the 5.5c I mentioned. So yes, it'll do quite well.
-
Yay, all is well! =)
Thank you so much.
Now I just need to figure out how to make the mouse not be inverted lol

Hmmmmm. We've had something of a run on people using Shivan's pack recently. I guess someone must have linked it or something. I put a big warning on the thread.
For future reference guys,
File:H:\_FS2_DEV\3 VPK\code\Cmdline\cmdline.cpp
Dead giveaway. Taylor keeps his dev files on J: and he built both of the builds Turey's installer uses so seeing a link leading elsewhere when someone says that they just downloaded FS2_Open is a big sign that something hinky is going on.
Same goes for BtRL or TBP except I keep my files on D:
-
Hey everyone, thanks so much for your continued help and insight, especially lobo who continued to help me after I ran into snags several times. I grew up with an older brother who was a computer guru (and is now even more so) and as a consequence, I became sheltered and ignorant in the ways of the computer.

It was the first thing that appeared in google when I typed Freespace 2 open =)

Does that mean I still have things to clean up?
PS. I can now play the game (yay!) although one aspect of the graphics seems buggy; whenever I land a hit via my lasers or missiles theres a big black square surrounding the fiery-impact; I hope you guys haven't run out of benevolent advice lol :D

Nah, my post was more to tell the other troubleshooters what to look out for next time someone posts something similar to your question. Lobo for instance only noticed you weren't running an official build after writing his reply . :)

Not by a long shot. There are a few basic things concerning FSO and the 3.6.9 build.
1. Make sure you're playing in OpenGL. Direct3D causes pain and misery and should be avoided at all cost. OpenGL and Direct3D can be toggled from the Launcher's Graphics tab.
2. You'll get invisible asteroids among other things if you don't enable jpg/tga textures. This is done by ticking the particular option from the flag list under the Features tab.
Anything else? Well, I suppose it won't hurt to remind you that in order to get the most out of FSO, you should also tick at least Enable specular, Enable glowmaps and Enable environment maps under the Features tab. That ought to get you going.

Hi good sirs,
Err, it appears I used the wrong link from my photobucket account above. This is what I meant to show;
These black rectangles occur despite my using OpenGL.
I've also enabled jpg/tga textures.
Other minor nuisances:
- One of the early training modules was meant to introduce aspect-seeking missiles; however all I got were the rockeyes. I can't remember what missiles they were but the instructions were "use [insert missile's name here] to destroy X" and all I had were rockeyes. I ended that simulation and tried to see if I had to outfit my ship with those missiles myself but I found I was unable to access the weapons tab for that particular simulation.
In fact, it seems up till now (I'm on ~8th, 9th mission I think? Something about travelling in a nebula cloud while the NTF launched some ambush) I haven't used ANY aspect seeking missiles; I've had nothing but rockeyes and tempests. One mission I got to use Cyclops things to "slay Ravana".
- Certain character speeches are fudged up; that is, a particular sentence appears to consist of words spliced from different vasudan sources. Examples include:
My human wingman says "That's a confirmed kill" but the voice is Vasudan and the speech seems to be choppy as though spliced from several different sentences. Also, after every briefing the same spliced speech states "Please review your objectives for this mission"
- The first time I run FS2Open3.6.9.exe and play a mission the game is autopaused, and every time I unpause it instantly pauses again. If I hold down ESC the game runs very slowly due to the constant opening and closing of the pause box. I have to alt tab to windows and alt tab back to the game for this pause issue to stop.
This seems to happen everytime I play FS2.
These are minor things though and I already really, really appreciate what you guys have done for me already. =)
EDIT: I just decided to start exploring this forum and I have to say, holy crap. I had no idea how there was such a concerted effort to make these additional Freespace 2 campaigns and Other Game mods. once I finish The actual Freespace 2 campaign I'd love to try out some of these. Is there also briefing narration and etc. in the fan-made campaigns? Aha that'd be so sick; although I'd have to hope that the modders would be good voice actors :D
-
Sounds kinda phunk33. The missile issue sounds a lot like a corrupt pilot file. You should have had them in the training missions with the 107th Ravens, and during the missions from there on. The solution is to create a new pilot. I know, it's not a pleasant solution but it should work.
The pause thing sounds weird. No ideas on how to properly counter it.
There are several entertaining and well-made campaigns available here. The most popular ones can also be downloaded with Turey's Installer. Only a minority of them, however, are voice acted. And yeah, the people here have done the voice acting in the campaigns that feature it. Not top-of-the-line, but still quite good concerning it's made by amateurs.
And I was wondering about that previous picture. I thought you were mad at us for some reason.
-
Hmm.... Black rectangles issue is (or at least used to be) an old issue related to additional game data files (certain graphic files in old mediavps had black alpha instead of having no alpha). You must be using older set of vp files than even the 3.6.8 zeta mediavps. Get the newer set of files.
-
Yep. I suspect the 710 patches are missing. Joe22c, before you go any further you should run the fs2_open_3_6_9_debug.exe. This will create a new file in your data folder called fs2_open.log Once you post that we'll be in a much better position to tell what you are missing and what you have that you shouldn't have. You don't need to actually play the game, simply get to the mainhall and quit.
If you have the debug version of a 3.6.10 build (It will have 20071028 in the filename IIRC) run that instead as it will give us even more info.
You have one of a few easily fixed problems but knowing exactly which one it is will help us fix it much more quickly.

Playing more Freespace 2 never hurts =D I'm only on like the tenth mission anyways.

Of course not! I am very grateful for your help! And that picture was a facebook graffiti I drew for a friend of mine that couldn't be saved due to a bug.

I see. Where might I find these newer medivps files? None of the files here http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/ seem to be it.

K, Im going to go download this debug.exe thing right now.
UPDATE:
ok, well I couldn't find the EXACT debug.exe you spoke of, so I got this instead
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Twelling/FShelp6.jpg)
I'm thinking it'll be just as good.
Upon running it, here be my log:

Couple of things... First (this one is more to Kara and other devs) could playing at 16 bit cause problems with alpha blended effects? And have you tried updating the graphics drivers? If you do try playing in 32 bit remember to check that your desktop is set to 32 bits too.
-
I'm no expert on helping with this kind of troubles but i do remember that having spaces in the directory route was bad... could that be part of the problem??? :nervous:
-
Not sure about running in 16-bit. I don't recall of hearing it as a problem except in BtRL though. The problem is probably much simpler. He doesn't have the 710 patches.
@Joe22c - I have the info I needed now. Here's how you get things working.
1) Delete freespace2\mediavps\data\HTL_Moloch.vp
2) You can probably get away with keeping freespace2\mediavps\data\NaRR10_Nebulae.vp but if you get any problems with backgrounds try moving it out of your FS2 folder.
3) Go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html). Download and run the FS2_Open installer.
4) When asked for a folder point it at D:\games\freespace 2\freespace 2\freespace2\
5) Tick the core FS2 and FS2_Open packages.
6) Tick any mods you like the look of.
7) Wait for the installer to finish updating your install. It will take a while depending on the speed of your connection.
-
Hi,
so sorry for the late, late overdue reply. Long story short: things got messy.
Anyways,
3) Go here. Download and run the FS2_Open installer.
I downloaded the installer offered in the first post. When I extract the 83 files into my D:\games\freespace 2\freespace 2\freespace2 folder and attempt to run "Freespace Open Installer.exe" it is unable to do so

NONONO!
What you need to do, is extract the installer to a new directory, and keep the directory tree intact. (don't move any files in relation to where they were. Basically don't take them out of the rt folder.) Once you do this, run the installer, and select your FS2 folder. Run it.
Methinks that you'll have to make a new FS folder, as all those installer files will complicate stuff. Drag the mediavps folder and all the VPs in your FS2 folder to the new folder. (put the mediavps folder inside the new FS2 folder, the other .VPs that were directly inside the FS2 folder go directly into the new one). Run the installer and point to the new folder. After you copy the files, you can delete the old folder.
-
Hmm. Can you post your FS2 Tree? (see my sig). That will list all the files you have in your FreeSpace directory, and they can then be compared by anyone else who has a working FS2, by comparing their output with yours.
-
No, what he did jr is he put all the installer .DLLs and the installer.exe into his FS folder. He didn't leave the .DLLs in their proper RT folder.
-
Ok.
So I removed the 83 files I extracted into my FS2 Folder.
They are now deleted.
So now you want me to extract the installer and the other 82 files to a different folder and "keep the directory tree intact"?
I'm not quite sure what that means, what is this rt folder you speak of?
-
You open the installer.ZIP thingy. You see this:
Drag that to your desktop or wherever, and open it, and click FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.EXE. Done.
-
Ah,
but see the thing is when I open the installer.zip that is not what I see.
This is what I see instead:

-
Download a new version. Get the windows installer.
http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip
-
And to avoid illegally using unregistered PowerArchivers, get 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

Ok, I downloaded this zip you provided but I still get the same result. I tried extracting all the files in the zip to a folder called installer I created on my desktop and hoped to run the installer.exe from there but still to no avail. =/
Is it a matter of my using powerarchiver that is causing this complication?
-
Probably. Get 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).
Once you install 7-Zip, right click the .ZIP, click "Open With>Choose Program...", and click "Browse". Browse to "C:\Program Files\7-Zip" and choose "7zFM" Click "Open" and then check "Always use this program". Done.
-
Ooooo
I see what the problem is. Or rather, my bro saw it. Apparently under powerarchiver I wasn't using the folder view and thus when I extracted all the files via drag-and-drop I completely ruined the rt folder that you spoke of earlier.
Anyways, new question time, yay:
I'm not sure which option I should select because I already have some FS2 files on my computer, =/
-
Uncheck "Say Yes To All", click Next and see what happens?
-
See, THIS is what an0n was talking about when he said we should make our stuff more accessible. :blah:
Anyway, Joe, welcome to the community. If you want to brush up on your history and play a thumping good story while you're at it, be sure to download and play the Freespace Port. :)

Click "Say Yes To All" and select everything on the next page except for the Mac and Linux stuff, and any mods you don't like.
