I've seen lots of people ***** about Norton, but I myself have never had a problem with it. On the contrary, I've had lots and lots of problems with Counterspy, which culminated today in my discovery that the antispyware software was causing errors in my audio driver setup, my graphics driver setup, even my chipset driver setup. Its also managed to break diablo II, and corrupt itself a total of 8 times, which once resulted in it trying to uninstall itself, which was rather amusing.
If your going to tell someone to avoid Norton, tell them to avoid Counterspy too. Its worse.
On a COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE, I'm now looking for good antispyware software. Any suggestions?

Spybot S&D and AdAware.

Spybot S&D and AdAware.
Yea.

AVG also has a free Anti-Spyware program... it hurts to use more than one antivirus and its helpful to use more than one antispyware.

only problem with avg is that it gives false hits on some programs,sopcast and ppmate to name 2 of them...;;;
it even gave hits on my preinstalled backup on my hdd which was create by acer !!!!

Avast! considers mIRC as a trojan.
f-Secure products consider HydraIRC and SFC3 as trojans.
Some healthy critique should be applied with any antivirus/antispyware software. Though so far Antivir has worked well.

Never once got a false hit from AVG and my slave drive came out of an acer... :doubt:

AVG caused the infamous "smss.exe" glitch for me.

Alright, with the overwhelming reccomendation of spybot search & destroy (plus the fact that I used to use it before "upgrading" to counterspy), I'll be using that. Thanks :D

Spybot S&D and AdAware.
Thirded.
And if you're going for complete anti-virus, I just installed McAfee after recovering Windows entirely. It works far better than my old Norton and is far easier to configure (a bonus for us gamers). Too, Norton screamed every time I ran a program; McAfee checks it in its database, sees that I set it as a fine enough program to connect to the internet, and continues to lie dormant... erm, sort of. I know Norton is supposed to do this, but I've heard a lot of stories about it NOT doing what it was supposed to. Also, my uncle is self-employed and thus requires the best in anti-virus protection. He has always had McAfee.
EDIT:

I use this program as well, to much avail. Great choice, IMHO.

I use AdAware. Worked perfect for years. Try that if you have any problems with spybot.
-
AVG works great, though I think I'd recommend Avast since it uses less system resources and the update isn't as bothersome.

I used AdAware as well, but it didn't really do much, so I got rid of it.

Good lord dont use McCrappy!!! Theres only 3 good AVs out there: AVG, Kaspersky, and NOD32. take your pic or just stick with Spybot and AdAware

What's wrong with McAfee?
-
I've had to fix two different computer systems that ran McAfee. The virus scanner was getting false positives on OS system files and tried to kill the whole system.

I had the same problem with McAfee. :ick:
Norton uses a rapid release update, (hourly update) which they warn may cause fales positives, but I haven`t had any major problems with it.
I`m currently using norton 360 and am happy with it.

Then you enjoy haveing 60% of your system resources eaten. congrats.

Here I use Avast and AVG stuff, I used to use Ad-Aware but not anymore. Something about newer versions white listing certain spyware because the spyware companies threatened them, but my reason for not using it anymore isn't that... I just don't use it these days, that's all. Spybot is powerful but it sure isn't n00b-friendly; yes, on my previous computer it did kill every last bit of Internet advertising, but it wrecked something down the line that made a lot of the interactive stuff on websites completely unusable no matter what I did, even the MSN online games service where all those casual games are. And it still didn't kill the Messenger Service hijack I had at that time.
AVG Free for antivirus... Using both AVG and Avast, both are good but Avast at totally-paranoid maximum protection seriously slows down the entire system, and I have to turn off individual shields when I notice my posts (like this one) are taking so long to process. AVG's guard.exe can get annoying at times as well...

I have NAV 2007 on one machine and hate it. The rest run AVG. As for spyware I run Spybot and Adaware but do not leave them memory resident. Also run Hijackthis once and awhile. Only think I ever come up with is the occasional tracking cookie.

QFT. You do that, your virus-free.

And that is why I've only ever gotten 2 viruses :P

I'm so paranoid about system resources but I am getting Kapersky later this year.
"Officially a good virus-scanner" so I'd recommend it.
Only recently did I realize that McAfee ranked so badly in the Top Ten for this year.
Have a look at this. http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/]]http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/ (http://)
Pricey though! :D

I sure don't, but my dad won't let me get anything else. At least there's only 23 days to go until I get Kaspersky. (I know this because the ****ing "Renew Norton" popup just came up 3 times, it also likes to do this while playing games) I'd recommend Kaspersky or AVG because of what I've heard about them, although Kaspersky seems to be better overall and AVG is proliferated by it's free-ness.
-
Yeah, i've been wondering about kaspersky. I heard it's the best anti virus on the net.

As i said, them or NOD32. NOD32 Is the best IIRC, but its not cheap

In coming back to this thread, I remembered another neat little gadget I use, Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com/). If used on your internet browser, it creates a sandbox for your browser cache, which lets absolutely nothing out. If you do pick up some virus surfing the web, it stays in the box. I have it set so that whatever I download goes there too. That way, I can dl a file, scan it, and if it's safe, move it into my system proper. If it picks up something, I just have to empty the box, and it'll blast the virus in the sandbox.
It's free, powerful, and only about 300kB.

Kaspersky
Used an older trial version of it that came with my current motherboard. Me likes.

I've been doing extensive reading, and Kaspersky and NOD32 are indeed the best, although either will set you back about the same as Norton or McAfee. Kaspersky is easier to use, but NOD32 has better detection rates (not by much). The defining feature of NOD32 is that it has an awesome heuristic engine (identifies viruses not in database) and it uses an almost nil memory footprint. I'm going with one or the other, probably NOD32.
