What I like about the guy, aside from the obvious, is that he was 80+ and still scuba diving. That's one bald badass.

Hey, quick question: since there are a few hundred Clarke books to choose from, which one would you folks recommend if you had to pick only one.

Damn :(

Rictor: That's hard to answer. I'm thinking Rendezvous with Rama or Childhood's End might be good choices, but there are so many.

Personal favorite was Light of Other Days, about wormholes and privacy issues and soforth, very interesting. Probably better to stick to his great works, though. Childhood's End would be a good choice.

Oooh, I had to read Childhood's End for my high school english class. One of the few books I enjoyed in that class. Good stuff.

If you're saying he was rumored to be a homosexual, why would that matter?

If I'm misunderstanding, sorry.  I've never heard of someone calling someone else a Garry Glitter, and Google gave me some Glam Rock pop singer.

GG was a bit of a kiddy fiddler actually. Although his name is slang for ars* too. I don't know which is implied by the prior post though.
Btw: childhoods end

Not read Childhood's end but Rendezvous with Rama comes highly recommended. I wouldn't touch the sequels with a 10' bargepole though.

Gary Glitter can be rhyming slang for ****ter, which can either be your arse or the toilet. He was also convicted in a couple of countries of molesting children.

As for favourite book, I rather liked Bicentennial man. Film wasn't bad either, but the book was way better.

"Clarke Denies Pedophile Allegations

Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke has vehemently denied a story in the sensationalist British newspaper The Sunday Mirror that claims Clarke is a pedophile. Earlier this week Clarke released a statement to the press that said, "the accusations are such nonsense that I have found it difficult to treat them with the contempt that they deserve." He added, "I categorically state that The Sunday Mirror's article is grossly defamatory and contains statements which in themselves and by innuendo are quite false, grossly inaccurate and extremely harmful."

The Mirror ran the offending report in its Feb.1 edition, a day before Prince Charles was to have visited Sri Lanka to bestow an honorary knighthood on Clarke. Clarke said he had subsequently asked that his investiture be pushed back "in order to avoid embarrassment to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales during his visit to Sri Lanka." The British born Clarke has made his home in Sri Lanka since 1956."

Yeah i believe so. But it's of no consequence. "Daisy. . . . . . Daisy, . . . . Tell me your answer . . . . . Do. . . ."
Shame, he was an ok bloke assuming the court made the right verdict.

I wouldn't believe The Mirror if they told me I was on fire while smelling smoke.

The reason Clarke was in Sri Lanka was because of his medical condition, he moved there long before the whole paedophile thing got famous. The UK was too cold for his condition.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/east/series1/post-polio-syndrome.shtml

One of the symptoms is intolerance to cold weather.

The Mirror was, as always, talking out of its arse.

RIP Arthur C Clarke.

@Wobble: Clarke did not write Bicentenial Man.  That was by Issac Asimov, another of the fallen speculative fiction elite.

If you are new to Clarke (or old, for that matter) I would have to recommend The City and the Stars.  Even twenty years after reading it for the first time, it still appeals to my sense of wonder like few other books out there.  It is kind of a toss-up whether I prefer the novella version Against the Fall of Night better.  Both versions have a lot going for them.
