Should my slapdash link fail. Synopsis: Gurkhas who retired before 97 have less rights than others. These guys are among the best i've met not only in professionalism but in attitude and morale. Parliament are gonna get some stick for this. V for vendetta where are you?
-
Fixed the link, and I agree 110%, they were some of the most dedicated, skilled soldiers in the Army, and they fought for a country that wasn't even their own, they deserve far better than they are getting.
-
Absolutely agree. Anyone who has fought in the army for a country should be top of the list for the right to settle in that country after their tour is over.
Hell even a fair percentage of Daily Mail readers would probably agree on this one.
-
I saw that today as well. I found it quite shocking that they didn't have right to residency in the UK as a result. Absolutely shameful.
-
What is a Gurkha?
-
Kara said it perfectly. More power to the Ghurkas. No one who has fought any battle for their country should ever be treated as horribly as these men are.

I know I shouldn't do this, but what the Hell.

@Bloodeagle
That's the difference between those who do what they are told, and those who do the telling.
@Sarafan
The Ghurkas are Napalese soldiers who used to work to an almost Samurai code of honour and have fought for the British Army for nearly 200 years. They are still considered to be some of the most dangerous infantry in the world.

You should see there knife the fearsome "kukri"

Now all we need is a Gurkha to say "That's not a knife. *That's* a knife." :D
-
This really sickens me. The government now claims to assess immigration by eligibility - does putting your life on the line for this country for a pitiful, second class wage not count? The government should literally be rolling out the red carpet for these guys - it's even more of an injustice than how crappily we treat our 'native' armed forces.
-
What is a Gurkha?
Back when the Brits ruled India, they recruited native troops, including at that time the Gurkhas. They started early, and they've continued for a long time. To give you an idea of how well-respected they are, the British Army circa the Zulu War considered them elite troops, at a time when the British Army talked down to everybody, and being native troops and not English they had a perhaps greater hurdle to overcome then simply not wearing red uniforms. The truth of it is they had superior discipline to anybody and everybody. A regular unit would abort an attack or break in the open field if it took casualties of 5-10 percent, and aggressiveness was not a valued trait. The Gurkha Rifles pressed their attacks harder, you saw their backs only after they were dead, they were aggressive, and unlike regular British troops of the time they were not only excellent riflemen but very capable at close quarters as well.
Even as late as the Second World War the Wehrmacht in the North African desert rated the "day is ruined" opponents an infantry unit could have as the Gurkhas, SAS, and then the Aussies.

Nothing compared to swiss soldiers. But still, more power to the Gurkhas!
-
:wtf: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Both shocked and appalled.
-
Hmmm... Thing for getting stones out of shoes vs Kukri....
Fight!

Penknife vs a foot+ of razor sharp steel-
Discuss. . . .

well, the pen is mightier than the sword, swords are multiple feet of knife, so a pen with a knife added to would be a fearsome weapon.
-
Your crazy logic has bested me. I cannot riposte, *draws 18th century Duelling pistol* i shall see you at dawn outside the generic french mansion.
(Penknifes are ok i guess :p)
-
Does that mean that a penlight is, by extension, a really powerful ray gun? :D
Sorry...odd humour.
Disappointing of the British government for not considering these people for immigration into the country. If anyone should be allowed...these people seem to have earned the right and the honour quite frankly. The red carpet should be rolled out.

For some reason that sentence got me thinking, "Kukri" would be an ace name for a FreeSpace Gurkha fighter, the profile of the knife looks like the profile of a cockpit anyhow.

do I sense a tiny billy connoly reference hidden in there ? :p

Funny how this should come up just as the Aussies send us one of "their" peados...

Must have missed that part in the news.
