Title: Hello!
Post by: MikeDelfino on March 19, 2008, 09:36:35 pm
Hello! I've heard of this game at Caltrops (the site where there were the top 100 of the greatest indie games) for the first time and got captured by its review!

I read good part of the faqs and some wiki, but this game really feels huge... currently i'm running the open installer, but i know that after i install the game i'll need some of your help :) i feel so newbie that it's embarassing for me..

By the way, any advice on where to begin in this great space war? :)

Thanks and bye

Marco

I recomend gooing with the Original campaigns of FS . Then moving on to the mod campaigns. If you encounter any problems tell us what the problem is and well do our best to help out.

Also could someone beamzoid him :P

My first wecome beam!

If you want continuity, I would suggest starting with FSPort and then moving on to the main Freespace 2 Campaign.  That's what I did the first time.

Select fsport as your mod folder in the launcher, select the FS1 campaign from the in-game campaign room, then go to briefing.

Honestly, if you want the best Freespace experience, I'd highly recommend these campaigns in this order:
* Freespace 1 (via FSPort, scroll down to the fully/partially released projects on the main index)
* Original Silent Threat (if you feel like it, the widespread concensus is that the original sucked. A remake of the original is in the works)
* Freespace 2 Main Campaign
* Derelict (widely regarded as the quintessential fan-made Freespace 2 campaign, my personal favorite)
* Homesick by Blaise Russel
* Sync and Transcend. Probably the best things to happen to Freespace since Derelict got voice-acted. Especially Transcend.
* All three Just Another Day campaigns
* The Procyon Insurgency

Most if not all of these are available through Turey's installer.

As a side note, Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ is excellent reference material when one wishes to become familiar with the functionality of FreeSpace, especially on the mod handling part.

Too bad it doesn't work for me.
Burn.

don't forget Sol: A history (someone made a remake of it, hear that's even better)

Personally, I'd skip Homesick, since the vile amount of bugs might be a deterrant for people who aren't that familiar with tweaking mission files.

Like me. Can't get homesick working either no matter what i try (yes, even the red alert fix) :(
Title: Re: Hello!
Post by: Jeff Vader on March 20, 2008, 09:26:53 am
Indeed. There were a few missions that wouldn't cooperate if you just removed the red-alert flag. You also had to (oddly) add the scramble flag so that the missions would start. Dang, I have to check out whether I have a full complement of those fixed missions somewhere. I had most, if not all of them.

Welcome to HLP and I'm not a fan of Homesick but then again I think I just need to play it again, it's been a while. :) I think I remember something about two big blue stars but I could be thinking of another campaign.

I think that the best freespace experience would be to play the orginal over and over again. And then move onto number two and be truly amazed at beams and flak. Heh. That's what happened to me. Took ages to re-train myself to stay away from cruisers...

And I'll second the recommendation of Transcend after the canon. Truly brilliant, although I felt that it collapsed towards the end...

...there's little point in speaking Italian?

That was my second post in Italian. The ratio is 1:3250. I think it's acceptable.

Wow. I understood most of that. Italian is very similar to French.

Obvious..they're both Neolatin languages.

I doubt you're able to understand dialects, however :P

Sounds acceptable to me. What sort of nationalities do we have here?

Create a separate thread for that, this is MikeDolphin's one...
Title: Re: Hello!

Örrörröö, puhutaan kielillä.

Haven't we had enough language threads already? I also recall a nationality thread from a few months back.
Title: Re: Hello!

D'accord. On peut discuté cela dans un autre thread.
Title: Re: Hello!
Post by: haloboy100 on March 20, 2008, 01:19:41 pm
Wow. A new member got his thread hijacked. Is that worse then being spammed hundreds of welcome speaches?
Title: Re: Hello!
Post by: Jeff Vader on March 20, 2008, 01:22:58 pm
Can't be better. But luckily there are no more speeches here. Just that lightblue thing there who believes that new people are prey that has to be beamed and the beamers have to keep a track on their 'kills'. Either way, this thread deserves to be split into a 'Hello' thread and a 'Nationality/Language' thread.

Thanks all for your advices and for the beamings :)... now i'm downloading all the files required to play the FSport and then i'll be on it for quite some time... i got a strange feeling like i'll be blasted hundred times by my enemies...

Mobius, i'll see you on msn, i'm gonna add you soon! the few italians must help each other (but - in this case you are the only one who can help :P)!

Well, i'm off to getting some training in FSport.. the downloads seem ready!
Title: Re: Hello!

Actually there are quite a few Italians, Darth DySkO, Admiral Edvidad, several others.
Title: Re: Hello!
Post by: Mobius on March 22, 2008, 04:53:17 am
"Several others"?

I recall YemminatoR, KARMA, now MIA, and a few multiplayer affected people who aren't HLP members.

There are 2(MikeDelfino excuded, he would be the 3th) of them who got the game using Turey's Installer but they're not HLP members(as far as I know).

EDIT: Where are you from, exactly? DySkO and Edivad come from Cernusco sul Naviglio(near Milan), YemminatoR comes from Mafia Capital City Palermo, KARMA probably comes from Ferrara(his e-mail address starts with "ferrarese") and I come from Lamezia Terme(CZ), in Calabria.

By not being a member, I think Mobius meant something about you being involved in any modding for the HLP. I myself am not a member in that way. I just lurk around, welcoming the odd newb, offering any advice if I have any about the SCP and generally have a laugh or a deep discussion on the general discussion board. But I haven't done anything notable, very helpful or productive while being here.

:wtf: Where exactly does Moby imply that Mike isn't a member? The way I interpreted it was that he knows 3 Italians who got the game with Turey's Installer, but two of them aren't members here. And that's why he excludes Mike from that group of three. Because Mike is a member. Right?

HLP used shivan beam.

Exactly. Among the Italians active in Multi I recall CLoneWolf and Kenoby(it happened a while ago, Dysko told me about them).
