i was looking at this campaign list, and i noticed there were 6 pages of FS retail campaigns and under 1 page of SCP.
I was just curious: What do more people use?
-
It's important to point out that all retail campaigns can be played using the SCP exes. They are backwards-compatible.
-
The advantage of the SCP is you can still play all those cool Retail campaigns but you get better OpenGL code, higher resolutions, higher polygon ships and better nebula's :)
-
Today there is hardly any reason to play retail. Unless, of course, one wants to get some nostalgy kicks. All the campaigns can indeed be played with FSO, and with FSO everything is always so much purdier.

For nostalgia I play FS1. :sigh:
-
Damn you and your nostalgia. I don't even have FS1. :(

I had to use retail to play the Neo Terra Victorious demo. It died with an error using FSO. It's probably easily fixable, but I don't know my way around FS2 data very well yet.
-
I used retail up until last week, when I finally got high speed on my home computer and downloaded it. My school computer doesn't have the horsepower for SCP.
-

If you don't care about nostalgia, you can get the FS1 port with the hi-res textures and models and other SCP features.
-
I don`t even have retail installed. :nervous:
Guess that sums up what I use. ;7
-
I only became interested in Freespace after 3.6.9 was released (I became interested via BtRL). Never really saw a reason to get retail (plus I'm on a mac so I can't).
-
I keep retail around for the rare occasion that a non-SCP compatible campaign comes along.
Otherwise, always SCP.
-
I see absolutely no reason to use retail other then the nostalgia and the aforementioned problem solving or non-SCP campaign.

I have FSPort. I've played it through numerous times. I'm just sad that I've never experienced the original FS1.

We got FS1 (the original) so long ago, I don't know when or where. Then we got the FS2 demo with a force-feedback joystick. Then I found FS2_open for my mac, and did some looking around and found the SCP. Then we installed it on one computer and made a DVD so we wouldn't have to do the same for the others. I haven't tried the FS1 port yet.
-
FS1 was just awesome. as bad as it sounds, i still prefer it over FS2.
maybe that's because that's what i did for 3 or 4 years straight (play FS multiplayer). i ventured into FS2's multiplayer like once, and was amazed (there were probably 25 people in the main channel, and a dozen games)... that's something we didn't have very often in FS1 multiplayer =P
Ahhhh i remember the days of me and Hurricane doing "Unstoppable", on 'insane', again and again an again =P

same, got it with that joystick... wierd though, isn't it? if you could even get that joystick to get set up with the game (which, i found out, you can't do with SCP. Keyboard or nothing :( ) once you get in the middle of the mission (at least with the demo) it crashes the game. I tested it alot, the joystick is definitly the culprit.
After that, i found hard-light after a month of looking for new campaigns. all i got till then was warzone, TBP, and blackwater ops. i nearly wet myself with excitement when i realized this game wasn't dead. :D
-
For some reason, I could never play FS2 with the media VPs turned on for more than 3 or 4 missions without getting bored. Sure I use SCP builds, but I haven't used the media VPs for months.
-
My first experience with freespace was freespace 1 before I even had a voodoo card and still then I thought it looked good, I have the original FS1 Cd's and Silent Threat CD. I did have original FS2 cd's which I bought straight away and then sold to cash converters when selling alot of my old junk and then only to buy them back off cash converters cause I missed my old games too much along with a mint condition WC4 copy that someone sold in the time in between lol.
-
I use SCP. Glowmaps, Autopilot and game engine cutscenes rule. The extended mod hotswap selection saves me from 200 different kinds of hell compared to retail and don't get me started on tbm files :) i'm having trouble getting the nvidia plugins to work with psp7 though and i'm considering giving up ever texturing a ship again. :(

Hmm. The FS2 Demo worked fine for me. The force-feedback even worked. I found other campaigns after I found Hard-Light ;)

I use SCP now, I first got into FreeSpace2 due to getting Collosus with Righteous Orchid Voodoo 2 graphics accelerator card. Liked it for a while, but couldn't get into it properly due to a lack of controller, (didn't like playing with keyboard and mouse!).
Then two years back I got bored of playing FPS (easier to play with keyboard and mouse) and I had a gamepad. I looked around for my Collosus disc and could not find it, found a demo disc with FreeSpace2 demo on it, then searched the web and found this wonderful place. Not looked back since.
-
SCP all the way! This laptop is new, and I really don't want to install retail FS1 (which I have stashed away somewhere) just for nostalgic value. I don't actually own a copy of FS2 reatail, and don't plan on getting it for the same reason (that and the money involved).
-
(that and the money involved).
Oh come on! It only costs 160 dollars on ebay! (http://cgi.ebay.com/Freespace-2-WIN-95-98-NT-Interplay-NEW_W0QQitemZ130169695288QQihZ003QQcategoryZ62053QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem)
-
Yes, and imagine the postage costs over here to England!
-
But d00d! You'd have an actual FS2 after that! Oh wait, this is eBay... well, you still might get an actual FS2 manual or a poster or something.

Holy ****! Anyone have an ebay account? I don't and don't want one (yet, I have no money). Leave him feedback saying that the FREE open version is a thousand times better, and that nostalgia isn't worth $160.
-
I've got two copies :) an original 99 first edition, and a budget 1+2 white label set :) and an original FS1 + silent threat.
I had no idea it would lead to all this when i bought the Damn things though :)
-
I prefer to use the retail version. I've never gotten SCP to ever work on Vista, due to an OpenAL problem, and I don't espcially mind just using the original Fs2.

I got 'em all. The original, the GOTY edition, and another special one i forgot about.
and also the FS1 bundle w/ silent threat :D

It is odd that my favorite ever PC game was one that came free with the machine my parents bought which was the DVD release of Freespace, so does that count as retail?
sadly however, neither the DVD or CD version work on my machine, (strangly however, FS2 does), so now I rely on the SCP for both my needs. Can I say what a fantastic job they have done, even after a break of 8ish years, I could immediatly tell the difference when first guarding the Orff.

Use TGA then.

SCP Rocks. My all-time favorite (PC) game is completely free.

I found hooky dlls so now i'm DDS compliant :) good times roll as they say.

How much? How much How much How much How much How much?
Make me an offer and i'll consider it. Bear in mind i have over 8 years combined money market and armed forces experience. That makes me a hard seller. . . . . ;7
