Title: Ummm, invisible asteroids anyone?
Post by: admiral_wolf on March 26, 2008, 06:52:25 pm
I seem to be having a problem.

I'm running FSO and everytime I play, any mission that has an asteroid field, doesn't have any visible asteroids which is all well and good as I can see the buggers when they hide behind them.  However, being invisible doesn't help my poor Galatea as it gets beaten up with things I cannot shoot, see or blow up.  However, I can fly right through them as if they weren't there.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Z0MG! Enable jpg/tga texturez.

Ummmm, "in the words of the Virgin Mary "Come Again""[/i]

What and how do I do that?  I've only been running FSO for 20 minutes, (If you discount the 6 months it lay dormant on my system as I hadn't downloaded OpenAL due to me being a typical male and not reading the instruction manual...)

The upgraded asteroids (and a lot of other things) use more hi-quality textures in .jpg or .tga format rather than .pcx.

In the FSO Launcher's "features" tab there should be an option to enable the use of these textures.

Build version will dictate if "Enable JPG/TGA" is even available.

But no one thought to ask what build was being run, what VP's were being used or what video card with what drivers.

I would assume 3.6.9, as that was in use 6 months ago, was it not?

And if Tureys installer was used and run to update (since it was mentioned that 6mo ago OpenAL was not present and the Installer now includes it), then there could be a 3.6.10 exe in there.

Never assume the build unless it is specifically stated, saves a lot of headaches.

Speaking of assumptions... if one doesn't see asteroids, it most likely means that the jpg/tga textures aren't enabled. 3.6.10 builds enable them by default and therefore the option isn't even visible on the Features list. That leads to the conclusion that one is running 3.6.9, in which case the support must be enabled manually, meaning that the Enable jpg/tga textures part has to be ticked from the Features list.

Pardon, if I didn't make myself clear previously but it was 2am and I had been solving heat transfer problems for about 5 hours. Which translates to heavy yawning, if you will. But if I'm not mistaken, there are approximately 72 threads about "Invisible Asteroids of Ultimate DoomTM", so one doesn't get more status if he/she starts yet another thread about it.
