I've been running Vista since September with very few problems which were easily solved by updating the program in question or by downloading a Windows Patch or newer driver.
I'm having problems running Freespace 2 Open. The only thing that works is the FRED files (map editor or something).
The other executables sit in memory doing nothing but eating CPU, and the official launcher says I haven't set the game up (which I have, I clicked Setup and did everything) and then says that Freespace 2 can't be run from the main drive or something.
Any ideas? I'm running Service Pack 1 of Vista x64 and my system spec is below, if you need any more info let me know.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2GHz (400MHz x 8)
ASUS P5K Deluxe WiFi-AP
4GB GeIL PC2-6400 Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel @ 800MHz 4-4-4-12
BFG GeForce 8800GTS 640MB @ 621MHz Core, 1.8GHz Mem
6 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB on HighPoint RocketRAID 2320 RAID 5
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 driving Creative Labs Gigaworks S750 7.1-THX speakers
Dell 2407WFP 24" Widescreen Monitor (1920x1200)

What exactly are the errors it's giving you?
I have Vista and run FSO just fine, btw, so it definitely works.

By that "Official launcher" do you mean the retail one?
Have you installed OpenAL? Also, running dual core cpu's can be a PITA. You may have to select the processor affinity to use one core!

Yeah... there is no Setup button or anything in the FSO Launcher (Launcher.exe).
There are two files in your freespace folder: FS2.exe and Freespace2.exe. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT touch them. They're the retail executables and are quite unneeded, since you can and must use the FSO engine. Use Launhcer.exe and nothing else.
Also, where have you installed FSO? An error report stating that "FreeSpace 2 can't be run from..." occurs if you've installed the game to, for example, My Documents or the desktop.

I think he got the Freespace 2 from fsoinstaller. So the deal is, to move your vp files from your folder called "mediavps" to your freespace root folder. And then, you can use the launcher which is renamed to Freespace2.exe.
Someone tell me that he got the same problem as yours when launching the game. However, I don't know exactly what contains the vp since they have the same name as the original Freespace 2 vp files (stu, root, etc...). So I suppose fsoinstaller isn't so great at all, in my opinion. I thought it would be a great deal to get in touch with Freespace 2 SCP for newbies. But instead, it's more complicated to install it.

* I used the Freespace 2 Installer.
* I have installed OpenAL
* I've tried ALL the exes
* Freespace2.exe is the closest I get, I can set it up but when I click "Play" the following happens
Attention!
Please configure your system in the Launcher before running FS2.
The Launcher will now be started!
I click OK and:
Error
Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory.
* I have installed to C:\Games\Freespace2
-
So just do What i say a post earlier. The game will work.

So you don't have Launcher.exe? You don't have FS2Open.exe? Then you haven't installed Freespace2 SCP. Run Turey's installer again!

Still doesn't work.
Launcher.exe just sits in memory eating CPU.
-
OK I just tried Freespace2.exe after moving the mv_*.mp files into the main dir and removed all the others like tango1_fs2.vp.
The Freespace2.exe starts the game and then it comes up with "FreeSpace has stopped working..."
-
Okay, so is your firewall blocking the game from running?
-
I got it working guys! I did a search in Programs and Features for "OpenAL" and saw something called "Host OpenAL" so I uninstalled both of them including OpenAL and reinstalled it and it works!!!
;)

Good! Now that's sorted......

*shakes head at some of the bad advice in this thread*
Why in the name of Satan's hairy bollocks would anyone advise someone having trouble running FSO to move the media VPs INTO the main folder? :confused:
-
Yeah, I'm rather confused by that myself.
-
:lol:
-
Who said that?
Oh! METALDESTROYER!!!!!
Bad boy! BAD! :no:

Dude, WTF, seriously. "Remove the retail vp files and move everything from \mediavps\ to \freespace\"? You sure? Those retail files can occasionally be useful. And it is common knowledge that you don't throw mod files to the \freespace\ folder (yes, the MediaVPs count as a mod). Turey's Installer is great. If there are no issues at the server end, it'll install everything necessary. And everything to its proper place. You say that the Installer isn't great. Sure, a new car isn't great if you tear it apart, throw away certain critical components and put the rest to the wrong places.
And another thing. As I already said, if you're gonna play FSO, instead of retail FS2, don't, I repeat, do ****ing not use either FS2.exe or Freespace2.exe. Those are the retail executables and using them effectively nullifies everything the FSO engine is supposed to do. The Launcher isn't renamed as Freespace2.exe. It is, surprisingly, named Launcher.exe. And that is what you should use.

No, no I didn't say you have to delete the retail vp. If you really have the retail vp when you installe your Freespace 2 SCP within fsoinstaller, so just let them here and just play. But, When someone tell me that he has the same problem as mention here, I tell him to take a screen of his Freespace 2 root folder and I see there is no vp file there but only in his mediavps folder which was in fact the retail build or perhaps a modify retail vp with the latest mediavp. Well I don't know since I use the original game. And in his screens, I saw that his freespace2.exe was the launcher (just display a more detail view in your explorer and you will see this.
So, I've just tell him to move his vp files from his mediavps to his root folder and it work but the training seem to crash after some second. Then I didn't have any new contact of him. Si I suppose he is playing a lot.
