I'm somewhat working on making a printable reference sheet with all the SEXPs on it
and a short version of the Wiki information. Not sure on the length atm but am looking at trying to
fit it all on 2 double sided pages.
Anyone else interested in having such an item or am I mainly just doing it for myself?
I know the FRED system helps you with SEXPs already, there's a launcher SEXP export function,
and you've got the Wiki... but I wanted something tangible like a paper reference guide. It also helps
cut down on open windows. Probably make it available in PDF if someone else is interested.
Attached a preview... and yes I'm retyping it all by hand in Photoshop.

I'd actually like that too. Yes, continue please. :)
-
I used papers at the very beginning, so why not? :)
-
Sounds good, I would probably use it.
-
The only problem I see with this is that it would get obsolete pretty quickly. I added 5 new SEXPs this month alone.
-
Nothing some updating won't fix.
-
Quite true... only issue being that page space gets used up pretty quickly - means it'll get longer.
-
You know, this April fools thing is slightly annoying when trying to
maintain who the original poster was.... :doubt:
Here's a completed first page (attached).
Before I go any further, any edits or tweaks I should be making or is this sufficient
for everyone to use? I might try to spruce it up with some more images if it doesn't effect print or read quality.
SCP only SEXPs I figure I'll list with a note in red next to the SEXP title, so you can differentiate between retail/open.
Unfortunately I can only get 11 - 13 SEXPs on a sheet, 22 to 26 on a doubled sided print.
So this is starting to look like it'll be a directory or SEXP "phone book" instead of a couple pages like I'd hoped.
Kara - is the Wiki being kept up to date with your additional SCP SEXPs or is it behind?

It's probably behind at the moment.
-
Make that definitely behind. Not by a whole lot though, and the information that is there should be accurate, so it's safe to use as a reference as long as you also take a peek at sexp.html before calling the whole thing done.
[Edit] The sexps in the wiki were given a complete checkup in august last year to bring them up to date, so that's your cutoff for what may be missing.
-
Ok thanks for the info.
I guess I'll look into getting one of the experimental builds once I'm done with the Wiki.
-
If you have room what would be nice is a know quarks section. Why is it I run into them ever day but can't think of one right now.
Wait got one. Force jump- can cause client side crash in multi if a big explosion is occurring.
-
That's more a bug than a quirk.
-
Yea but it was the only one I could think of at that moment. I know there are more of them that aren't really bugs just strange was of things working. One just hit me. The rand sexp only evaluating at mission load.
-
Isn't that really what Mantis is for?
If I tried to keep a list of current bugs I'd have to be in hourly contact
with all the SCP people and read darn near every post in the FS2 sections here.
As to having room... I'm making another guesstimate thinking around 10 pages now.
Really I probably need to count the SEXPs and that'd give me a better figure to go off of.
Whatever room I've got left over will probably end up being used for future SEXPs.
As much as a bug section would be updated, you're better off making a sticky topic on it
and updating the first post as needed.
-
Quirks aren't the same as bugs. They're not going to be fixed. They're odd little things the engine does that you might not expect. So if the game has one now it will probably still have it 5 years from now.
That said the best place for it would be the wiki so that they can be added as people notice them.
-
That would be better than a cheat sheet. An updated Wiki page with a printable version option would be great. I think most people would rather just alt-tab then have another piece of paper on their desk.
-
Seven good reasons my list is better than the current SEXP Wiki
1. This is to help me memorize the SEXPs and I like having something in hand. I already have 20+ tabs usually open.
2. My list has pointers and colors that indicate important parts so it's faster.
3. If you printed the Wiki out now I think you'd end up with more pages than I will, without the indicators (there's also spelling errors).
4. The Wiki is divided on separate pages for retail/scp, mine will be in the same group.
5. Not sure on this yet, but if possible I'll make my list PDF searchable... which will have the advantage over the Wiki search.
6. It looks better graphically ;)
7. When I get done it'll be more up to date than the Wiki.
But for bugs/quirks, yeah Wiki'd be better I agree.
-
Alternatively, you could just keep using FRED until you know all the SEXPs off by heart.
-
You missed the point. I didn't say the Wiki was better. I said you're list idea might be better off as either part of the Wiki or a replacement for what is there now since last time I looked (been a few months) it was out of date. Then you could either view it right on the screen or have an option for the printable version.
-
... or just link my list at the top of either page since it will be downloadable ^_^
-
Bringing this back up again....
I'm working on this off and on, but just did a head count and with just the
SEXPs on the Wiki alone, I'm going to end up with about 33 pages probably.
Add in what the Wiki probably hasn't been updated with, and I'm going to guess around
40-45.
Being that I can only churn out about 2 pages a day if I'm focused on this, do the few who were
interested in having a paper version still want me to continue?
It's not looking like it'll be much of "quick" guide any more and more of a book.
