Title: I protest!
Post by: MP-Ryan on March 31, 2008, 07:07:26 pm
My clock says 6:11 PM on MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2008.

Yet I am still being

Spoiler:
Rick Roll'd by every $#@!ing external link.  You damned GMT bastards!

Its still 5:00 where I live.  Can't you guys set that thing to activate based on the user's time zone?

Its 5:00 where I live too...

However we are kinda asking for it since us pacific people are on the far end of the time scale. We're the last ones to hit april fools day, and the poor guys in new zealand are already almost out of it by then.

Spoiler:
April Fools runs on internet time.  The day starts when New Zealand hits midnight, and doesn't finish until the Aleutian Islands hit 11:59 PM. :p

Besides, Rick Roll is just the appetizer.  The best is yet to come. ;7

Well I didn't want to short-change our Kiwi colleagues.  It's already 1:26 PM (http://www.google.com/search?q=current+time+in+new+zealand) over there.  I actually ran several hours late. :(

Watch it all be unicode or something.

THEN I'd laugh.

What a wonderful day before my birthday (which is April 2nd, not first. Cause it's still the 31st here too :doubt:)

1:26 PM (http://www.google.com/search?q=current+time+in+new+zealand) over there.
You bastard. I'm not falling for that :P

Besides. I can see what all links lead too at the bottom of firefox anyway. Built in protection :P

I was just surfing through forums, clicking links that sounded cool; average stuff. When I get to the end of my Firefox tabs, I GET 20 ****ING TABS OF RICK ROLL!

I think I speak for us all when I say: CURSE YOU, GOOBER!!!!

Title: Re: I protest!
Post by: Goober5000 on March 31, 2008, 09:44:42 pm
 I wonder if there's some sort of record for number of successful Rick Rolls per hour, and whether I've broken it.

The really funny thing is that I've Rick Roll'd myself a couple times.

EDIT: The script is pretty trivial.  Just hack into the BB code and replace the (url)(/url) tags with links to the video.
Title: Re: I protest!
Post by: CP5670 on March 31, 2008, 11:36:43 pm
Eh, you could have done better. The rickroll links are common enough on other forums that I tend to instinctively look down at the status bar before clicking on any links these days. :p

You should have done something more reflective of current affairs here, like making the entire forum show up in the rainbow colors from blackhole's program. :D

I gave him a PHP script to do that, but he wanted to do the rickrolling instead :P

Apparently that too is an april fool's joke, because besides the rickrolling (and yeah, I clicked a few of them. Damn you :p) nothing strange and horrible seems to be happening. At least, not yet...  :nervous:

[Edit] And just as I posted that, the whole forums slowed to a crawl, telling me that it's starting... nice timing ;)

[Edit] Oohh, how very random. That's a new one. Mouseover gives it away though. Oh, and bonus points for lagging GW just as badly as HLP :p

Nice, it made me into judge floro. :D

How exactly does it choose the new user? I'm seeing a number of obscure people with only a few posts, some from many years ago, but at the same time the current regulars are still more common than you would expect if it's picking them at random from the entire user list.

When you first log on, it makes a list of all the user IDs from all the messages posted during the past 15 days.  (This is why everything slowed to a crawl when I first turned it on -- everybody online was populating their cache.)  It then selects a random user ID from that list.  This method has the advantage that the people who post more often have a higher chance of being selected.

There is a 1 in 10 chance that someone from the entire user list -- not just someone from the past 15 days -- will be selected.  And there's a few-in-500 chance that an additional random profile tweak will be performed.

I kinda liked this, now that it's over and done with. What did they do last year? Does anyone remember?

They did nothing last year.

Which was in itself an April fools thing.

Seriously, while they got the day off doing whatever an admin regularly does, the various campaign and mod members were scared into thinking what the admins would do that would be worse than the year before that one.

Could it get any worse than...yeah, it could've been much worse than this year's. They could ban everybody, for instance. :nervous:

But that would destroy the point of it...

Or they could give everybody mod powers. They might even blank the entire forum, perhaps. :doubt:

I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned the random signature change.

Was there a random signature change as well? I thought the sigs only changed according to the user names.

There was a 4 in 500 chance that one of the following would happen:

1) A poster would appear as Setekh
2) A poster would appear as Janos
3) A poster would appear as Guest
4) A signature would display the lyrics to Leekspin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leekspin).  In Finnish.

These odds were recalculated for every post that was displayed, so if you viewed a significant number of posts, you had a strong chance of seeing at least one of these.

Oh...that didn't happen for me. Regardless, I felt that the user mix-up was quite fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I was late for April Fool's Day.
