Hey Guys, noobie modeler here. Check out the link below to see my new Kangxi class destroyer. Currently I have 7 turrets on top and 3 turrets on the bottom for blobs and flak. Also have 3 beams (TerSlash, BGreen, AAAf) on each side. I am planning to add two more AAf or turrets on the bottom , two blob turrets on each side, and one BGreen on the front. This is very much a WIP, and I would like comments, criticisms, etc.

Looks good so far, but the thing jutting out on the left has to go..
-
I like the wings, keep them
-
for when you're turreting: It looks like those bigger parts at either end would have heavy beams mounted on either side. But then on bottom and top there woud be some frakkin-huge mega-blobs and stuff. maybe a few AAAf, but not much else.

Thanks for the input.

The two things at the side of the ship are side engines. Are you talking about those or are you talking about the thing jutting out of the side engines? I think the ship would look weird without the side engines.
Here's a pic from the top.

The design doesn't strike me as being that of a destroyer for some reason. It'd work fine as a frigate, though.
Personally I think it's the thin neck and wings that do it.
On the whole, though, it looks good.
-
It doesn't look to be from the Freespace universe
-
The curves make me think Vasudan more than Terran. With those engine pylons, it seems like a hybrid of the two races.
-
GTVD Kangxi?
(as in...Galactic Terran-Vasudan destroyer - a joint effort)
-
I honestly don't smell a destroyer either.. or a frigate, for that matter.. problem is, it comes closest in my mind to a destroyer, but the think neck makes it look wierd... You COULD downsize it and make it a cruiser, of course...
-
If that thing is an average destroyer (2000m long) that window must be huge at least 200m tall
-
Hmm...
I think I like the Terran-Vasudan hybrid idea. I know this model is different from the typical bulkier Freespace universe ships, but perhaps Terrans and Vasudans are moving toward sleeker ships for whatever reason?
I think the thin neck might lead people to get the impression that the ships is fragile, and thus it might not impress on people immediately as a destroyer. However, the Hatshepsut also has a long thin neck although its a very wide ship.
I was also thinking that the windows would be a bit big, but I haven't gotten around to playing with that yet.
-
What did you make this in, anyway?
-
Model made in SketchUp, had it exported as OBJ and UV mapped with LithUnWrap. Used Truespace for hierarchy and turret placement. Then used PCS 2 Beta to generate pof files.
-
Yeah dude your bridge window is too big, it destroys any illusion of scale.
-
Yes IMO make the bridge much smaller and without a huge frakking window on it. It still looks like a corvette or frigate to me though.
-
At that scale it should be smaller than a Fenris
-
replace it with a band of light tiles I guess...lol. simple solution.
-
If you notice you got a tiny window/light texture wrapped around the ship hull (yellow).
That thing on the back looks like a carrier bridge with a huge window on it. The whole part and the texture are way over sized... (like 80-90%)
So far it's good, but the hybrid part is not scoring with me. keep at it. maybe pursuing one racial type at a time will help you out until later and you can come back and rework this one.
-
I hear you guys loud and clear. Thanks for the input.
I am thinking of perhaps making it an experimental cruiser. I still like the bridge thing at the back, but I think I will tinker with the window.
