What the hell did you do?

Is that even possible? I've broken CDs before, but it never looked like that.

In other news, another member of FreeSpace Disk family has died. It will now be added to the endangered species list. Back to Bob with sports...

Was that Darkness Rising?

It's the Great War, thankfully. Darkness Rising is nearly extinct (who still has that? Me, Goober? Anyone else?).

I still have it. That's what got me hooked on FreeSpace, playing that over and over. I now hate missions without shields* though...

*Whoops, I left a key word out of my post. :D

Me too. :D

I wonder why they got rid of the After Burner trails and planet bitmaps.

Looks like you had a hairline crack on that CD. Had one of my own CDs do that.

That's my friend's Great War CD. Also my FS2 cd is broken like this.

I don't know what was wrong with my DVD drive ;) In ten seconds it was being louder and louder with every moment and then it made a big boomie, "expectorated" some pieces of disc at all room and hurted me and cut my skin on hand :ick:

BTW, can anyone upload darkness rissing?

Do it your own, Snail :P

It would be hard to submit it from Poland :P

So does your copy still work?

I have my own oryginal copy of Conflict: FreeSpace DVD version :)

And 3 cds of FreeSpace 2 (one backuped, not oryginal. Old DVD destroyed it similary to the friend's disc)

Post by: Cobra on April 03, 2008, 03:29:08 pm
I don't think it's the drive, it's the CD. When a CD or DVD shatters like that, it's because there was a hairline crack in the disk, and the  speed of the disk's rotation caused it to shatter. Or something like that.

They did an entire episode on exploding CDs-in-drives. Microwaved alone made the CD look awesome!

Darkness Rising was a demo for FS1 that was just the First Act of The Great War (until the Taranis mission) which included Afterburner trails and planet bitmaps. I played it for 2 years before actually getting FreeSpace.

I remember, once, paul Merton demonstrating on Room 101 that CDs were indestructible.

He did the following things to a CD, one after the other
1) Scratched it with a compass
2) Smeared Jam on it
3) Burnt the Jam and disk with a small Blowtorch
4) Placed the Disk in a plastic bag, you know the ones you put home-made sandwitches in, and prceded to smash it to pieces with a hammer.

He then placed the CD pieces in a CD player, in their correct places, and pressed play.
It played perfectly

I remember, once, The Sizzler demonstrating that CDs were very destructable.

I did the following things to a CD, one after the other
1) Rubber a magnet all over it.

I then placed the CD in a CD player, and pressed play.
It broke the CD player.

Is suspect the "CD" played perfectly because, the CD player was a Combo CDplayer/Radio/Tapedeck and had the demonstrated song on tape in the tape deck

You mean prove how destructable a cd player is? Cd's aren't magnetic storage, rubbing a magnet all over them will do nothing. Cd's are however sensitive to temperature, and plopping them in an oven at who knows what temperature could **** up the data (it'd be like ****ed up burning the whole cd at once).

By rubbing, I don't mean holding the magnet near the CD. I mean rubbing the surface. And by rubbing the surface, I mean scratches and scrapes and slivers falling off.

Darkness rissing was like FreeSpace 2: Colossus which had 10-12 FS2 missions.

Darkness Rising was Act 1 of FreeSpace 1, and like 5 out of 6 acts in FreeSpace 1&2 it has 10 missions. :)

No, Darkness Rising is lost to the depths of hell... except for the few of us that still have it.  :p

Darkness Rising is the best FreeSpace version ever. Better than FS1, FS2, SCP... Everything. But only because of the sentimental value it has for me. :(

FS2 came in German and English. There was a certain version that included both languages IIRC.

Speaking of versions and availability and such, people in the UK really, really like FreeSpace 2: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freespace-2-Sim-Year-Game/dp/B00004KHB0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1207939419&sr=8-5

I almost got my FS2 for around that price but found a much cheaper price somewhere else.

So you wanted to pay $600 for FS2? :P

[EDIT] Bah, my math was off. Damn this recession and the dollar not being worth the same as it was two months ago.

Hey, it is a nice game.

But you would be crazy to pay that much for any game. Perhaps someone should post a link to Turey's installer?
