What about a GTVA style ranking system? It would fit nicely since this place is Freespace oriented...
-
you mean like Cadet, Ensign, Lieutennant Jg. Lieutennant, Lieutennant Commander, Commander, Captain, etc?
-
I think that's what he means...and if that's so....well, that would definitley be nice for people who are "newcomers", "members", even valued members or senior members...but for those who have titles, I doubt they'd like it:nod:
-
Hmm, interesting. Two things to take into account though:
1) We deliberatly keep the titles "normal" so that we don't get spammers posting lots of pointless stuff to reach Admiral or whatever. So far it's worked.
2) We have a finite amount of time here, and as much as the input is appreciated no matter what the result of this is there's no promise that anything will be done.

Why not just open up custom titles and bypass the problem altogether? However, that might come into conflict with this though if people start making offensive ones:

um..
they are open arent they?
Or is this because I'm a moderator that I can change mine?

Yup...I can change my title also, only moderators can do that.
-
I don't care, so long as there is a veiled reference to my nipples in mine...
-
It'd be nice to allow everyone to customize their own. I don't think trolls are too much of a problem around here, and you could always just censor stuff. That's what I'd prefer, but its all good to me anyway. :)
-
I would say keep the custom title option in the hands of the admins/moderators.
But make the ranks FS related

Yea I can't believe you'd have a problem with trolls and such, but hey anyways is cool, though I'd like to be able to change my name :D

I love you too Blue. :D ;)

I would like to bring up this point:
We have all worked hard to earn our moderator status and get the ability to change our titles. If everyone had that ability then all that hard work that we went through will go un-appreciated. I vote that we keep the old HLP ways and stick to what has made this community so strong in the first place
I hope that more agree with me
-
Actually, I thought you moderators, because you are moderators, have special priviledges, so what hard work did you all do? It came with the job. So what are you talking about?
-
Yea... and they didn't even get a "job"... they just got hosted... great hard work
Actually... in my opinion, the custom title option should only be given to those who have proven themselves trustworthy, kind, and appreciative to what the admins do for us :) Probably rules me out, but i don't care.
-
We work on campaigns and wrote long e-mails to get to being a moderator!

Yes? what about those who work on the campaign for you? Those that you hired for free? They work hard... And what about those who work on campaigns hosted some other place than HLP? Being a moderator shouldn't be restricted to just those who "work hard" on campaigns off of HLP.
-
You mean those that volunteered...
Remember, it's a privilege to have a custom title, not a given right. It would be much easier for the HLP staff to simply say "No hosted projects!" and wipe out all the web sites and their forums. Maybe harder in the short term, but much easier in the long run. You might also note that vB costs $160.
Plus, if HLP gave a custom title to all of those who work on hosted projects, half the regular posters or more would have one...(http://www.evilnet.net/~mechwar3d/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif)

Hmmmm, you're right. I never thought of it that way.
Hey Setekh, what do you say that we call it quits and all go down to the pub? I'm sure vB has a refund option, 160 US will get lots of drinks.
-
B-But think about all the angry emails and spam, and removing the members' titles... :D

But my only staff member is Maeglamor, and he's HLP staff and actually had to give me back my title because of the problems they're having with vB.
-
Why can't we all just... get along?
I liked it the way it was, where if the Powers That Be gave you a title and avatar it was special. I got one because of my FS Port project being hosted here.

Had to?

Just checking. :drevil:

What else would I mean?

Yeah, if things start to turn out that way, titles should just say with admins and those who've "earned" them I think... just keep things the way they are I guess.
-
if it ever becomes a problem then we will simply restrict titles to admins.
-
Notice to admin: I've started a poll related to this in the staff forum, please reply to it ASAP so we can sort this out and let things settle down.

I figured. ;)
-
I don't really care about the titles too much as long as I can post stuff, which is what forums are for.;):D
-
I liked the old way better, I mean, only HLP admins (and not hosted peoples) to be able to change titles, coz it's more fun :)
-

Yes that's the way I liked it too... this way with the moderators being able to make their own custom titles is ****.... besides, with only admins giving titles, it makes them appear more powerful :D You do want that, don't you admins?
-
One of the things I really liked about the old forum system was that Most people didn't have 'specials'. I thought it was really cool when I logged in one day and I found that someone (presumably Setekh) had changed my title to "*404error*". I didn't request it, I didn't put it there myself and no one ever mentioned to me that it had been done. Because it just appeared there one day, I figured that I'd passed the test of merit. It 'meant' more to me that way. Custom titles and avatars should rest entirely in the hands of the admins.
-
I liked the old way, getting the title Hanger Man was a good day indeed.
-
Personally, I couldnt care less what my title is, someone could change it to "Sally" and I wouldnt give a damn (hell, I'll do it myself).
-
I gotta say, I go to some forums where previously you could have custom titles, and there was no problem. People still worked on **** and tried to gain distinction- they just didn't do it for silly privelidges. They also had some kinda system worked out eventually (I don't know if this is feasible or not), where everyone could get a custom title AND a stock one, and it was a great honor to have THAT one messed up. 'Course, the whole affair is silly, but if that's possible it was an excellent compromise.
Me, I'm just happy that this way I can some day get a different one than I had on the last board...

Sounds reasonable enough...

Exactly!
-
Indeed, that was me Mik. I take pride in giving valuable titles to those who deserve them. You do something which deserves merit, I give you a title. It's not something you can do yourself; too easy. This is something you can take pride in. That's what I liked about the old system, and dislike about the new one.
 (I'm just showing this smiley to my friends; ignore that. :p)
PS. Agree just about completely, Shrike. There's a glimmer of hope but it's not much use if everyone just keeps complaining. Get Kier over here and get our US160 back, dude.
-
Anything is fine with me!
-
Ok folks, I posted this because I figured it would add to the forums a bit. If all you're going to do is piss and moan about rank titles then do it somewhere else. Its getting old.

That whole train of discussion would have been my fault, sorry about that...
-
Erm, sorry :o
So, what should the various ranks be, and their respective post counts?

At this stage: most probably standard - nothing special, unless staff make an exception (as we did in the old UBB system).

I agree.
-
Bah, leave it like it is.
If we could change things to fit how we the individual users like, then the servers would get crowded with extra images and whatnot.
If you want to stand out, do it in your sig, that's why they're not limited isn't it?
-
Heh. Another reason we won't have special post rankings is that it encourages spam. Spam = bad. HLP's rockin' signal:noise ratio = good.
-
Well we don't want massive sigs (or images for preference) but yeah, I suppose they're not there for nothing.
At this stage it's looking very much like we'll be reverting to the old ways - all custom titles will be awarded by admin only for doing something for the community and so on - asking for them will reduce your chance of getting them. Avatars will also be removed and the only ones to have them will be hosted site people and admin. Overall (although I liked the avatars) I can see that it's a better way than this.
-
What T said. ;)

To be perfectly honest I can't, but if thats the way you want to run your board then I'm not going to argue.
-
Personally I think having fs2 related titles is kewl (based on post count) and spamming wouldn't really be a problem because u guys do moderate this forum. I constantly visit the civfanatics forum (for those of you who don't know the game civilization, shame on you) and the people there have civ based titles based on post counts (chieftan, warlord, prince, etc). So far I haven't seen any spamming there or if there is it's been purged. I think HLP could handle a simliar thing here.
-
We've reached a decision, avatars and custom titles shall be removed. Hosted people get their hosted icons and people who contribute amongst the community will recieve custom titles as we decide to award them.
Since it's over - thread un-stuck.

cool :) I think I'll just put my title back to senior member :p
-
Is it back to the way it was with names or start from scratch?
-
well, seems someone gave me my old title back :p

Mine too, Thanks :D

Which is the whole reason why I made this suggestion because I figured the general population was mature enough that this place wouldn't get spammed just for ranks.
-
Could always punish the spammers..
ie. Change their title to "****tard" or something along those lines

ya know, I fell of my chair when I read that...and then again when I pressed "quote" and read it again

How about slowly deducting those who spam for rank...
Into the negatives! (http://www.evilnet.net/~mechwar3d/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif)

you know, this is the 5th-6th time you've done this, which leads me to wonder, are you drunk when you go onto the internet, or are you just that tarded'

Drunk and half-blind.
-
:blah:

I lost my contact lenses. That's why I'm half-blind.

As a suggestion, KT, it's not very polite to go around and accuse people of being drunk or stupid, even if they are :p

Meh. I was annoyed. :p

OMG! IT'S SETEKH!!!!
Anyways, I think we should go for the Freespace system, or put it back to the old one. You know, where everyone was simply a member?
still doesn't have a custom title, darnit!

You know this thread is incredibly old, right?

I think he missed that part
