Title: Random crash?
Post by: Masta Crouton on April 05, 2008, 04:14:13 pm
It seems that my game will crash oddly at random places.

For one, when I first played it, it crashed after I selected my callsign. I started it again, and made it to the first training level. It crashed loading that. Played again. Crashed after I beat the first training level, and I had to restart my computer.

Wtf is going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

Please provide the following information:

-Hardware specs
-Operating system
-FreeSpace 2 or FreeSpace Open
-If Open, what build and what MediaVPs
-How did you install the game

-Dell Dimension 2400
Processor: Intel Cerleron 2.70 ghz
254 MB RAM
Intel 82845G Graphics Controller 64 MB
-Windows XP
-Freespace Open, I believe.
- 3.6.9, I think, again.
-By the Java installer that came with it...

Sorry, this is my first time ever playing this game, I might not know all this stuff.

Hmm. If you used Turey's Installer, it is safe to assume that you indeed are running the 3.6.9 build, and possibly the 3.6.8Zeta MediaVPs. At this point, I'd also like to make sure that you've remembered to use Launcher.exe, since FS2.exe and Freespace2.exe are a Neddy No-No and you shouldn't use them. Ever.

Still, I'm a bit puzzled. It might be because of that Intel graphics chip. I've never heard anything good concerning them, when talking about FreeSpace. But usually it is more related to the fact that the drivers are bad and don't support OpenGL.

Ach, beats me. Hopefully someone with more understanding on the issue happens to barge into this thread.

Now it's taken to just crashing in the middle of missions. It worked for a while, but then, zap.

Quits, pops up that little damn Windows "sorry for the inconvenience" BS.

Help? Please?!

I really like the game, but it crashes every time I begin to engage the asteroid in the first mission!

I'm running it on Direct3D8, since you said my card doesn't support OpenGL.

;_;

It might support OpenGL. Most likely won't but you can always give it a shot. The other option would be to try retail FS2. Which would recquire you to use FS2.exe and Freespace2.exe (yeah, I know I told you not to use them before). That would nullify all the eyecandy and prevent cutscenes from playing, but hopefully the game itself would become playable.

But all in all, this is all most likely your graphics card's fault. Changing it should help, but if that's a laptop... it might be a bit tricky.
