Title: Oops.
Post by: RyuHimora on April 06, 2008, 03:52:52 pm
Picked up my joystick for the first time in a month, and did the last mission in FS2. Kinda forgot how to jump out...

Pretty crappy reason to die, not remembering Alt-J.

Press F1 and you can see the basic controls of FS.

Command : 'Get out of there Alpha 1!!'
Alpha 1 : 'I can't!'
Command : 'Why?'
Alpha 1 : 'Errrmmm.....'

Another reason why FS1's Command was smarter.  They remote-activated your jump drives, not leaving anything to chance. :D

Wait, you have to activate your jump drives for the last mission?

All that ever happenedon mine was two cutscenes player, one after the other (Sathanas Nukes Star, Player Survives).
I assumed it was that because I was sitting patiently inside the node the whole time, lobbing trebs.

I think he meant one of the missions where the player had to jump through a jump node, like the SOC mission where you played demolition derby on the Shivan Comm devices.

But he specifically said "the last mission in FS2"

In the last mission in FS2, you have to jump out through the Vega node to surive the supernova.

In the second-to-last mission in FS1, you red-alert to subspace to pursue the Lucifer.  You don't have to explicitly jump.

Really? I never did, and the game said I survived.
Heck, I don't recall command ever telling me there was going to be a supernova. The Saths nuked the star, then the game played the cutscene saying I lived. Is my last mission borked? lol.

You never got the "The Capella star has gone supernova!" dialog and the timer?  :wtf:

Nope, never...

You must be the second coming of Grey Wolf (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,450.0.html) then.  :nervous:

No no, the supernova happened alright. I ensured both Cains died.
The game played the cutscene of the Sathanas blowing the star. The game played the ending cutscene.
Capella most definitely exploded. Its just that I didn't have to do anything to get out alive.

But if the supernova didn't happen ingame... how did you made it to the cutscene?
Title: Re: Oops.
Post by: Droid803 on April 06, 2008, 07:07:38 pm
no clue.
The game played to two cutscenes in order...but I never received any warning from Command.

Right!  If you were one of my crew I would suspend your flight status on the spot if this came up in debriefing and send you for retraining immediately!  Not being in total control of your fighter costs lives pilot, think yourself lucky this time.

Note, that to jump to subspace, you must lock the throttle at zero, lift the handle up and shift to the left.  Then throw forward.  You will hit Subspace at around 40 mps.

You can jump out of Capella before the Sathanes trigger the nova, that must be what Droid did.

You do know that i'm already dead, right sir?

Also, they took that out after the Valkerie interceptor. Too many people were complaining about their throttle jamming open.

Why that is very noble of him. :P

No. I saw both cutscenes...I did not jump out.
I saw the Sathanases trigger the nova. And immediately afterwards, the "congrats, you live' cutscene played...

You, mister, need to reinstall.

A friend of mine I installed FSO for actually complained to me about how the last mission was really anticlimatic - for a while I couldn't understand how it could not be considered climatic with the mad dash to the node, but eventually I worked out that event didn't happen for him - just the same as it appears to have not happened with Droid. The game just ends and the cutscenes begin in the middle of a dogfight. :\

We'll look into this for the next MVP set, but in the mean time could a couple of other people please have a play through of the last mission to see if the same thing happens?

I don't know if this is a bug with the mission file or FSO, but it really needs fixing.

I got FS2 retail, so there were no bugs to be noticed however... I got the same anticlimatic feeling. There should have been one more journal entry of Bosch before the 'Hooray, you win!' or 'You suck, loser.' cutscene. Either that or just one more mission at the end that explained or reminisced on both games. You wouldn't have to do anything in it, maybe simply fly a patrol pattern and hold a conversation with your wing and command. Just a thought.

I think it had something to do with the cutscene pack.
Originally, I didn't have any cutscenes at all (I used FSO from Turey's installer). After a certain point, the game would just boot me to the main hall. When I installed the cutscenes, at the moment when it usually boots me, it plays both cutscenes together. I though that was how it was supposed to be (though I wondered about what dash to the node the ppl were talking about)...guess it isn't.

I bet I know what it is.

There have been a number of changes to the end-campaign sexp, in order to ensure widest possible compatibility between FS1, FS2, and all the third-party campaigns.  This is complicated by the fact that the end-campaign behavior was actually changed between FS1 and FS2.  I betcha Droid803 was running a buggy version of FSO.  Instead of toggling an internal flag, the end-campaign sexp simply booted him out of the mission.

What version of FSO was this, Droid803?

People don't read my posts...  :nervous:
I think its 3.6.9 or something.

:sigh: I guess you don't realize that one of the attractions of Turey's installer is the ability to download updates?

EDIT: Okay, 3.6.9 is a start.  Did it come with a readme, or a zip, or anything?  Is it the "official release" 3.6.9, or one of the more recent versions?

It can download upgrades?  :eek2:
Well, the readme in my FS2 directory is empty...
I can tell you precisely when I installed FS2, if that helps...

Or you can run the Installer over your current installation. It should detect out-of-date **** and download more recent versions.

I've played this mission as part of the campaign recently on both FSO 3.6.9 and FSO 3.6.10 with 3.6.8z MVPs, manually installed over FS2 retail (patched). It worked as it did in retail.

However, I tried playing the co-op MP version using 3.6.9, and it kicked us back to the main hall suddenly. I think this happened when the supernova countdown should have begun.

Do you have the Lightspeed version of the FS2 Campaign? Because the last mission in that has two suns, which stuffs up 'supernova-start'.

Huh? Worked fine five minutes ago, when I tested it via the Mission Simulator.
