Title: Bear kills fish. Shock ensues.

Germany's celebrity polar bear Knut has triggered a new controversy by fishing out 10 live carp from his moat and killing them in front of visitors.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine news website reports that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp", fishing them out, playing with them and then leaving the remains.

Double-you-tee-eff. Have we really come so far, as a society, that the notion of a polar beat hunting fish is now repulsive to us? Have we come so far in our quest to impose our stamp of morality on the natural order of things, that one animal killing another is now a moral outrage?

"Senselessly murdered the carp"?! It's a god-damn bear, not a signatory to the Geneva conventions. Maybe we should send the bear for some sensitivity training.

I fear for this world.

/me slaps Knut around with a big trout

* Knut snatches the trout and proceeds to senselessly murder it in front of children

* Trout does not approve

...I agree with Rictor. It is normal behaviour for any juvenile animals to play, and normal for predators to play with their prey.

The question is, what kind of nutjob puts live carps in a pool where a polar bear has access to and expects it to leave them alone? Not that I mind about the carp, they don't really have the brains to handle pain in the sense we know it, but it's just stupid to place them there in the first place.

Critics say Berlin Zoo should not have put live fish inside Knut's enclosure.

An intelligent thought!

"Senselessly murdering carp"... wow. Just wow. For one thing, I didn't know an animal causing another animal's death was counted as "murder" (isn't that reserved for humans killing humans?), and for another, how in the hell is a bear supposed to understand morality? It's a freaking wild animal, you idiots! Cats almost always play with their prey before finishing it off, and nobody ever bats an eye.

faithInHumanity--;  :sigh:

How cruel. I demand that the polar bear be sent to court and sentenced to 50 years in jail, in solitary confinement.

I love the western morality. You can easily show people punching, kicking and shooting each other in TV, but if there's even the slightest glimpse of a boobie... Oh My Sweet Merciful Mother****ing God! That is sure to turn children into sick, twisted, ****ed up killing machines.

Oh, there was this one case that I heard of. Someone found a porn movie where all the curse words had been bleeped. Curse words. In porn. What the bloody hell?

I suppose spiders are a menace to society as well, since they act as mass-murderers, capturing and devouring insects. Oh, and little birds as well. They must all die, in the good and honored name of morality.

I think the claim of murder relates to the fact that he didn't actually eat the fish, merely killed them. But anyone who knows anything at all about animals knows that all young predators do this.
Title: Re: Bear kills fish. Shock ensues.
Post by: Rictor on April 09, 2008, 06:44:47 am
My cat used to play with birds/mice all the time, and not eat them. I don't think she even realized she was hurting them, but the size discrepancy made it impossible not to. For young animals, its more of a toy than a meal.

Good grief, there's a point where conservation turns into stupidity. It's a ****ing polar bear, not a teddy bear!
Title: Re: Bear kills fish. Shock ensues.
Post by: Nuclear1 on April 09, 2008, 06:00:50 pm
Unfortunately the German (well, world) media portrayed Knut just as that: a poor, abandoned teddy bear who needs the world's sympathy.

I personally think the little scamp will never stop being adorable, but he's still an animal who lives on animal instincts and behavior.

you do realize this is an animal thats capable of catching and devouring a beluga whale. if you skimp on his enclosure then its pretty much asking for something to go wrong. if he can get into the carp tank, then he can get out and eat little children.

No more Discovery Channel...
No more hunting for trophies...
No more fishing - the fishermen don't eat all the fish they catch - that is senseless murder...

Anyway, who said the bear didn't eat the fish later? He was learning how to catch them, just like anything else.

Wedycewelos. :hopping:

At the end of the day, Polar Bears live in a fridge for their natural habitat, and are the largest predators in that environment, so there's nothing stopping it stockpiling anyway.

Orcas live in the water.

Edit: Though, in all fairness, I should have said Habitat instead of Environment for clarity.

This is ****ing stupid. And the zoo is trying to cover their asses saying that the carp were put in to eat algae, and weren't meant to be eaten. THey can't even say what they want to (the truth, that the bear was supposed to eat the fish) for fear of having someone go PETA on their asses. The bear (and us, for that matter) have been eating animals for 20000+ years. Why make a fuss about it. F***ing retarded.

Y'know, I grew up around bears.  Mostly black bears, but grizzlies too.  Wild ones.  Cougars, elk, moose, deer, coyotes, wolves, badgers, wolverines, and lynxes too.  I've seen all of them.  Met them all up close and personal in the bush.  Never had a problem, never gotten chewed, kicked, or killed (obviously), and only chased a few times.  And I can say, unequivocally, that I would love to take every single human being on this planet who is shocked by a bear eating fish, or animals killing other animals, or whatever other PC bull**** is entering our conception of animals and place them in the same wilderness, place them in the same environment, and I am 100% certain they'd be eaten, maimed, or trampled after the first encounter.  And good riddance.

This is like the morons that used to complain that we shot problem bears in the Kootenay region of BC.  I'd like to start transplanting them to Stanley Park (Vancouver).

These are not cute, cuddly soft toys folks.  Too many (or, if you follow my line of thinking, not enough) stupid people forget that.

So what are they gonna do next... find the bear guilty for murder and send him into a cage for ... no wait

The best thing I have ever seen.... was a huge party/celebration done on live TV in San Francisco, Cali when they were releasing an otter from 'captivity.'  There was a band and everything there.  They opened the cage, the otter swam out into the bay, turned on its back and started cleaning itself.  Really cute, y'know?

The next thing you know, a huge shadow came from underwater, a killer whale broke the surface and swallowed the otter whole.  the band stopped playing.

The single most hysterical thing I have ever seen in my life.

Silly hippies.

I currently live in Edmonton.  I spent the first 23 years of my life in the Kootenay region of southern British Columbia.  It's got more critters than people =)

Bah, the humanity's chances of destroyign all life on Earth are practically nil. Even many of the most resilient surface dwelling animals would survive a nuclear war, and when you go into oceans and all the bacteria and other stuff... you just can't kill everything.

I even doubt it would be possible to destroy human as a species entirely in a nuclear war. Oh, it would be possible to do significant short term damage to ecosystems and destroy multiple species that aren't able to adjust on changes on short notice - and species that take long to reach sexual maturity would suffer from radiation more than, those that take less time - but still, there's no snowball's chance in hell the nukes could manage - directly or indirectly - convert all biomass in Earth into deadmass.

It would suck ass majorly, but it would not be the end for life on Earth. Culture as we know it, yeah... many species, yeah, but life would go on.

Even if most mammal species - including humans - died out, we still have rats, omnivoric, venerable species that can adjust to pretty much everything. In about 50-70 million years there would probably be a new species capable of building nukes, evolved from rats (compare - dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago and the evolution of land mammals began on it's earnest).
