I've been working on this one for a while now.

I like, and I want.
-
Nice! Lots of detail!
-
:jaw: :jaw: Is it common to make ships so good that they don't need textures? (or even want them for that matter.)
-
Well, you'd still want a basic texture to colorize the thing
-
All ships need textures. Even those uber-high-poly models that they use in TV and movie CGI shots. There comes a point where the textures that you do need become extremely basic, however, like a metal texture with no paneling (the paneling is actual geometry). Nothing that high-poly would ever get in-game though.
-
Looks awesome :) Although your polycount is gonna be insane on export ;)
-
Very true. Don't expect to use this in-game unless it uses only ONE texture and is used sparingly in missions (not more than one per mission, no other big ships around).
-
Just to drop a comment, no harm intended...
It definitely has the detail, but the shape itself is still very very basic to me... were it a downloadable POF, I wouldn't know what shipclass to assign it as... I don't know, it looks too short to be a destroyer, it lacks a certain "character", but if dullness was intended then I can't say anything.
The front reminds me of TrashMan's battleship, but that's about it.
:)
On the topic of Sketchup, how does one do a mirror anyway? I can never do perfectly parallel models... not that I can model in the first place...
-
This is a MUST-BE-IN-FS2 !
It's so awesome that I'm speechless.
There should be a law to make awesome ships like this one, or the very high detailed model render Colossus that I saw on deviantart, to be in-game.
-
parts of it look very battlestar inspired (looking at the top of the back of the ship), and the whole thing is quite phallic.
now, learn to use a real modelling program!
-
Shush, Sketchup is fun :p

You mean like making half of a symmetrical ship and then mirroring it for the other half? What you need to do is make a copy of the half, and then scale it by -1 along whichever axis, and then place it where it needs to be.
EDIT - UNKNOWN TARGET: Sorry blowfish, accidentally ht modify instead of quote on your post :D
-
Just shave off some of the little creases and stuff, and make it a bump/normal map (those are what you use, right?)

What I do is make the model so it's center is right on the center axis of the world, then draw a square across the whole center, then intersect with model. Then select everything on one side, delete, and duplicate the right side and make them both a component ( so anything you do on one side will be mirrored automatically on the other. Then I move the other side, flip it, and attach it down the center.
-
I used a lot of copy, paste, flip and intersect on this model (Didn't know about the other methods).
Thanks for all the feed back, makes me want to keep doing this stuff. I was thinking of making a smaller ship the next time around like a fighter or bomber.
@ Turambar; Your right I got a lot of inspiration from BSG and my brother agrees with you that is a bit phallic although his language was a bit cruder. I know I need to learn another program so I can start producing content you all can use but real life is very busy right now. This model alone took 3 months just working on it in my spare time.
-
looks like it belongs in BSG instead of Freespace

Gave her some teeth
